Energy access at refugee camps is one of the main challenges to address in humanitarian response actions, especially on long-term situations. The lack of access to electricity depends, among other factors, on the local natural resources and available technologies. In this sense, solar photovoltaic is one of the most appropriate technologies, especially now with the decrease of the photovoltaic costs. But long-term performance, reliability and social acceptance must be ensured to facilitate the introduction of the technology and its rapid widespread in these humanitarian context. This work presents the results of a field study conducted at the Saharawi refugee camps, inspecting the photovoltaic systems installed in the health institutions after 10 years of use. Results show how despite the good initial system design and high quality of the PV components, the lack of training on operation and maintenance of the PV installations have led to a dramatic reduction of the lifetime of the systems. Strong training programs on basic photovoltaic concepts and operation and maintenance of systems are required to solve this problem and guarantee the long-term functioning of the installations. The authors acknowledge funding from the ‘Agencia Andaluza de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo’ (AACID), project number 2014DEC008

Use of crowdfunding in Chile: an exploratory approach

    Get PDF
The FinTech industry includes crowdfunding companies, which consist of collaborative financing platforms. The potential use of crowdfunding among Chilean undergraduate students is empirically analyzed. An ordered probit model is used to test the determinants of the probability that a student will use a crowdfunding platform in the future. Also, a qualitative analysis containing arguments by which students would or would not use crowdfunding in the future is presented. The results indicate that trust in financial institutions and prior crowdfunding knowledge have a positive and significant effect on the probability of using these platforms. This paper constitutes one of the first to explore the growing crowdfunding market in Chile from the demand perspective

Modeling GHG emissions, N and C dynamics in Spanish agricultural soils.

    Get PDF
To date, only few initiatives have been carried out in Spain in order to use mathematical models (e.g. DNDC, DayCent, FASSET y SIMSNIC) to estimate nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) dynamics as well as greenhouse gases (GHG) in Spanish agrosystems. Modeling at this level may allow to gain insight on both the complex relationships between biological and physicochemical processes, controlling the processes leading to GHG production and consumption in soils (e.g. nitrification, denitrification, decomposing, etc.), and the interactions between C and N cycles within the different components of the continuum plant-soil-environment. Additionally, these models can simulate the processes behind production, consumition and transport of GHG (e.g. nitrous oxide, N2O, and carbon dioxide, CO2) in the short and medium term and at different scales. Other sources of potential pollution from soils can be identified and quantified using these process-based models (e.g. NO3 y NH3)

The principal conclusions are in three different axes: the first one is related to the impact to institutional level of the therapeutic community, the second one links itself with the impact to socio-cultural level, which can be indirect ó directly. Finally the third axis in which the social impact is identified is to academic level, in which they receive relevancy the innovation in the development of new devices, the role of the university and the impact in the professional identities involved in the project.Asociación Argentina de Energías Renovables y Medio Ambiente (ASADES

Evaluation of Adipose Tissue Zinc-Alpha 2-Glycoprotein Gene Expression and Its Relationship with Metabolic Status and Bariatric Surgery Outcomes in Patients with Class III Obesity

    Get PDF
Zinc-α2 glycoprotein (ZAG) is an adipokine involved in adipocyte metabolism with potential implications in the pathogenesis of metabolic disorders. Our aim was to evaluate the relationship between visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) ZAG expression and metabolic parameters in patients with class III obesity, along with the impact of basal ZAG expression on short- and medium-term outcomes related to bariatric surgery. 41 patients with class III obesity who underwent bariatric surgery were included in this study. ZAG gene expression was quantified in SAT and VAT. Patients were classified into two groups according to SAT and VAT ZAG percentile. Anthropometric and biochemical variables were obtained before and 15 days, 45 days, and 1 year after surgery. The lower basal SAT ZAG expression percentile was associated with higher weight and waist circumference, while the lower basal VAT ZAG expression percentile was associated with higher weight, waist circumference, insulin, insulin resistance, and the presence of metabolic syndrome. Basal SAT ZAG expression was inversely related to weight loss at 45 days after surgery, whereas no associations were found between basal VAT ZAG expression and weight loss after surgery. Additionally, a negative association was observed between basal SAT and VAT ZAG expression and the decrease of gamma-glutamyl transferase after bariatric surgery. Therefore, lower SAT and VAT ZAG expression levels were associated with an adverse metabolic profile. However, this fact did not seem to confer worse bariatric surgery-related outcomes. Further research is needed to assess the clinical significance of the role of ZAG expression levels in the dynamics of hepatic enzymes after bariatric surgeryThis study has been co-funded by FEDER funds (“A way to make Europe”).
