    Transfer Functions and Penetrations of Five Differential Mobility Analyzers for Sub-2 nm Particle Classification

    The transfer functions and penetrations of five differential mobility analyzers (DMAs) for sub-2 nm particle classification were evaluated in this study. These DMAs include the TSI nanoDMA, the Caltech radial DMA (RDMA) and nanoRDMA, the Grimm nanoDMA, and the Karlsruhe-Vienna DMA. Measurements were done using tetra-alkyl ammonium ion standards with mobility diameters of 1.16, 1.47, and 1.70 nm. These monomobile ions were generated by electrospray followed by high resolution mobility classification. Measurements were focused at an aerosol-to-sheath flow ratio of 0.1. A data inversion routine was developed to obtain the true transfer function for each test DMA, and these measured transfer functions were compared with theory. DMA penetration efficiencies were also measured. An approximate model for diffusional deposition, based on the modified Gormley and Kennedy equation using an effective length, is given for each test DMA. These results quantitatively characterize the performance of the test DMAs in classifying sub-2 nm particles and can be readily used for DMA data inversion

L’innovation émerge des interactions entre ces acteurs, qui mobilisent des ressources et produisent des connaissances dans des dispositifs collaboratifs, afin de générer des changements. Elle recouvre des domaines aussi variés que les pratiques de production, l’organisation des marchés, ou les pratiques alimentaires. L’innovation est reliée aux grands enjeux de développement : innovation agro-écologique, innovation sociale, innovation territoriale, etc. Cet ouvrage porte un regard sur l’innovation dans les systèmes agricoles et alimentaires. Il met un accent particulier sur l’accompagnement de l’innovation, en interrogeant les méthodes et les organisations, et sur l’évaluation de l’innovation au regard de différents critères. Il s’appuie sur des réflexions portées par différentes disciplines scientifiques, sur des travaux de terrain conduits tant en France que dans de nombreux pays du Sud, et enfin sur les expériences acquises en accompagnant des acteurs qui innovent.     The Influence of Number and Timing of Pregnancies on Breast Cancer Risk for Women With BRCA1 or BRCA2 Mutations

    International audienceBACKGROUND:Full-term pregnancy (FTP) is associated with a reduced breast cancer (BC) risk over time, but women are at increased BC risk in the immediate years following an FTP. No large prospective studies, however, have examined whether the number and timing of pregnancies are associated with BC risk for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers.METHODS:Using weighted and time-varying Cox proportional hazards models, we investigated whether reproductive events are associated with BC risk for mutation carriers using a retrospective cohort (5707 BRCA1 and 3525 BRCA2 mutation carriers) and a prospective cohort (2276 BRCA1 and 1610 BRCA2 mutation carriers), separately for each cohort and the combined prospective and retrospective cohort.RESULTS:For BRCA1 mutation carriers, there was no overall association with parity compared with nulliparity (combined hazard ratio [HRc] = 0.99, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.83 to 1.18). Relative to being uniparous, an increased number of FTPs was associated with decreased BC risk (HRc = 0.79, 95% CI = 0.69 to 0.91; HRc = 0.70, 95% CI = 0.59 to 0.82; HRc = 0.50, 95% CI = 0.40 to 0.63, for 2, 3, and ≥4 FTPs, respectively, P trend < .0001) and increasing duration of breastfeeding was associated with decreased BC risk (combined cohort P trend = .0003). Relative to being nulliparous, uniparous BRCA1 mutation carriers were at increased BC risk in the prospective analysis (prospective hazard ration [HRp] = 1.69, 95% CI = 1.09 to 2.62). For BRCA2 mutation carriers, being parous was associated with a 30% increase in BC risk (HRc = 1.33, 95% CI = 1.05 to 1.69), and there was no apparent decrease in risk associated with multiparity except for having at least 4 FTPs vs. 1 FTP (HRc = 0.72, 95% CI = 0.54 to 0.98).CONCLUSIONS:These findings suggest differential associations with parity between BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers with higher risk for uniparous BRCA1 carriers and parous BRCA2 carriers

    The predictive ability of the 313 variant–based polygenic risk score for contralateral breast cancer risk prediction in women of European ancestry with a heterozygous BRCA1 or BRCA2 pathogenic variant

    Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate the association between a previously published 313 variant–based breast cancer (BC) polygenic risk score (PRS313) and contralateral breast cancer (CBC) risk, in BRCA1 and BRCA2 pathogenic variant heterozygotes. Methods: We included women of European ancestry with a prevalent first primary invasive BC (BRCA1 = 6,591 with 1,402 prevalent CBC cases; BRCA2 = 4,208 with 647 prevalent CBC cases) from the Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1/2 (CIMBA), a large international retrospective series. Cox regression analysis was performed to assess the association between overall and ER-specific PRS313 and CBC risk. Results: For BRCA1 heterozygotes the estrogen receptor (ER)-negative PRS313 showed the largest association with CBC risk, hazard ratio (HR) per SD = 1.12, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.06–1.18), C-index = 0.53; for BRCA2 heterozygotes, this was the ER-positive PRS313, HR = 1.15, 95% CI (1.07–1.25), C-index = 0.57. Adjusting for family history, age at diagnosis, treatment, or pathological characteristics for the first BC did not change association effect sizes. For women developing first BC < age 40 years, the cumulative PRS313 5th and 95th percentile 10-year CBC risks were 22% and 32% for BRCA1 and 13% and 23% for BRCA2 heterozygotes, respectively. Conclusion: The PRS313 can be used to refine individual CBC risks for BRCA1/2 heterozygotes of European ancestry, however the PRS313 needs to be considered in the context of a multifactorial risk model to evaluate whether it might influence clinical decision-making

    Microstructural features of concrete in relation to initial temperature—SEM and ESEM characterization

    International audienceBoth high initial and subsequent curing temperatures of concrete are known to induce decreases in strengths at 28 days of age. This paper deals with observation of the concrete microstructure to point out some differences that would be responsible for these changes in strength. For this purpose, conventional electron microscopy (SEM) and environmental electron microscopy (ESEM) techniques were used to study the microstructural features of normal strength concrete prepared at two initial temperatures (20 °C and 50°C) and cured at either 20°C or 35°C. Using either SEM or ESEM, three major results can be observed on fracture surfaces. When initial temperatures are increased, the bulk paste seems amorphous, with a local poorly textured morphology. Moreover, air voids and capillaries can be seen close to the paste-aggregate interface. High initial temperatures also promote crystallization. Particularly, intermingling of little ettringite rods and large crystals of calcium hydroxide are observed on aggregate imprints, which results in an open microstructure of the paste. This latter observation explains the decrease in concrete strength as a result of a weakening of the interfacial transition zone. There are also outstanding differences between SEM and ESEM observations, which indicate artifacts of drying when using SEM

    Constitutive parameter identification: An application of inverse analysis to the flow of cement-based suspensions in the fresh state from synthetic data

    WOS:000395847500002International audienceRheometers with specific impellers, developed to characterize the behavior of cement-based suspensions in the fresh state, are used to limit the heterogeneities induced during shearing but they make the identification of the rheological parameters less straightforward compared to conventional rheometers. This paper presents the inverse analysis method and discusses the quality of this identification procedure when applied to such materials. The procedure includes a CFD simulation based on the finite element method using a Herschel-Bulkley model. Two kinds of optimization algorithms are used: a deterministic simplex method and a stochastic genetic method. As a first step of a larger study, the procedure reported in this paper used 2D synthetic data, i.e. 2D numerically generated experimental data. Two numerical vis-coplastic materials, characterized by shear-thinning and shear-thickening, were selected and studied. The results obtained with the two algorithms are systematically compared to the known parameter solution. Three approaches corresponding to three levels of user's knowledge about the material under study are considered successively: (1) the user has no a priori knowledge about the material, (2) the user knows whether the material is shear-thinning or shear-thickening and (3) the user is able to estimate the behavior index. The time-consuming genetic method appears to be suitable when the a priori knowledge of the material is slight, whereas the simplex method gives a reliable solution in a few iterations when the level of knowledge is higher. Both algorithms encounter more difficulties with the shear-thinning material than with the shear-thickening one. In this paper, the advantage provided by the genetic method regarding the non-uniqueness of the identification procedure for real experimental data is also highlighted: this method provides a collection of satisfactory solutions among which the user can select the optimal one based on his scientific background and/or on further experimental test results
