Factors associated with rural aging in Brazilian municipalities: an analysis using quantile regressions

    Get PDF
In rural Brazil, aging is an important phenomenon for the future of the country’s agricultural production. This process is associated with both increased life expectancy and rural-urban migration. According to studies on migration, young people are more likely to change their place of residence, being attracted by the existence of work opportunities and, consequently, repulsed by their scarcity. This study assumes the rate of rural aging tends to be higher in places where the ratio of urban to rural work opportunities is high. Thus, using spatial dependence models and quantile analysis of data from the 2017 Agricultural Census, the effects of factors associated with income, agrarian structure, and location on rural aging in Brazilian municipalities were assessed. The results suggest rural areas with low attractiveness situated close to urban centers are the most susceptible to population aging and, consequently, rural depopulation

The tobacco small farmers and impact of restrictive credit policies on the planted area in Brazil: assessment of tobacco control policies

Brazil is one of the greatest tobacco producers, just behind China, and the largest tobacco exporter in the world. On  the consumer side, the harmful effects of smoking on human health have led to a debate on control policies. In addition, the initiative to become a member of the Framework Convention Tobacco Control (FCTC) and the creation of the Brazilian Tobacco Control Policies (PNCT in Portuguese), both in 2005, has contributed to the implementation of various measures to reduce the demand for tobacco in the country. Furthermore, to promote agricultural diversification, the Brazilian Central Bank has gradually restricted credit to small tobacco farmers in the National Program for Strengthening Family Farming (PRONAF in Portuguese). In this context, this paper aims to estimate the impact of credit restriction on tobacco production according to the productive structure of family farming. The results of the study show that the greater the rural credit restrictions imposed in alternative scenarios, the more significant the reductions in tobacco areas and income. Also, the increase in revenue from other agricultural activities mainly affects the group of farmers with 5 to 100 hectares, which shows the potential of this policy as an alternative to reduce tobacco dependence

__________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTFungal infections are persistent public health issues. The current picture of mycoses reveals an increase in their global incidence and an arise of species with intrinsic resistance to available antifungal agents. Seeing that, the scientific community has been searching for therapeutic alternatives. The natural products have been thoroughly investigated for their biological activity. In Brazil, the Cerrado biome stands out for its rich chemical diversity, being a promising source for the isolation of active secondary metabolites. Therefore, the present work evaluated the activity of extracts and substances from the Cerrado’s species, Astronium fraxinifolium Schott (Anacardiaceae), in yeasts, dermatophytes and tumoral cells. In a triage of activity from A. fraxinifolium organs’ extracts in different polarities, the ethyl acetate extract from the root’s bark was the most active, presenting broad-spectrum action in all the fungi tested with MIC values from 0.24 to 125 μg/ml. From this extract two cycloartane-type triterpenes were isolated: 3-β-cycloartenol (1) and 3-β-cycloeucalenol (2). In order to contribute to the chemotaxonomy of Anacardiaceae, the ethyl acetate extract from the leaves was also submitted to chromatographic fractionation due to its chemical profile and to the interest in the species’ phytochemistry. From this extract were identified a steroidal ketone – tremulone (3) – and two pentacyclic triterpenes – β-amyrin (4) and lupeol (5). The compounds 1 and 2 showed cytotoxic effect on leukemic cells line HL-60 with IC50 values of 10.8 μg/ml and 9.2 μg/ml, respectively

This study aims to highlight how Piaget's theory can explain the writing learning evolution through the interaction between subject and object, from the point of view of reflecting abstraction. It is intended to make a relationship between the Psychogenesis of Written Language levels, elaborated by Emilia Ferreiro and Ana Teberosky, with the types of abstractions studied by Jean Piaget. The study aims to show how the reflective abstraction is present when moving from an earlier, simpler level of writing to the next, more complex one. The data were collected through dialogues, inspired by the clinical method, with twelve children among 4- and 8-year-old of kindergarten and elementary school. The dialogues were conducted through digital platforms due to the absence of face-to-face classes caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. It was found that it is possible, due to the collected data, to make a connection with the reflecting abstractions, presented by the children, and the writing levels evidenced by the Psychogenesis of Written Language studies

The state of negative demand relates to a target market that does not like the product, i.e., thathave feelings, beliefs and attitudes that generatepurchase resistance. This paper aims toinvestigate which evaluative dimensions are observed for a specific service with negative demand(insurances), in such a way to identify the most important aspects in determining customersatisfaction. The research type employed was the quantitative descriptive one, by means of thesurvey method. Results showed that, using an exploratory factor analysis, four groups ofcharacteristics were identified and must be managedby the firm: attendance, image, trust andInternet. Moreover, the regression analysis showed,in order of importance, what are the factors that most contribute to firm evaluation. It was observed that the firm under study must invest inthe improvement of customer attendance, since it isthe main element that leads to satisfactionand it has received low grades. Strategies relatedto the improvement of communication, qualityand attendance efforts are recommended
