    Studies of fluid movement in the eye

    Although much work has been carried out on the movement of many substances into and out of the vitreous, very little is known about the transfer of water. In order to facilitate subsequent analysis, studies were performed using an inert tracer, xenon-133 dissolved in saline, as well as tritiated water. Chapter 1 forms an introduction to the thesis. It details relevant anatomy and simimarises previous work in the field, drawing attention to gaps in present knowledge. Chapter 2 describes experiments in which xenon-133 was injected into the vitreous of rabbits and subsequently collected in one of the vortex veins draining the choroid, on the sclera and in the anterior chamber. It was found that most of the xenon-133 was removed in the blood of the choroid. The experiments outlined in Chapter 3 are analogous to those of the previous chapter, hut in this case, tritiated water was the tracer under study. As with xenon-133, most of the tritiated water from the vitreous left the eye in the blood of the choroid. The rates of removal of the two isotopes were also comparable. It is evident that the ordinary water molecules in the vitreous are being changed rapidly with a mean transit time from mid-vitreous to choroid of approximately 30 minutes. A mathematical model of diffusion is developed in Chapter 4. The model is based on three-dimensional diffusion from the vitreous through the eye with removal occurring in the choroid. Because of symmetry, only a two-dimensional solution is required. The results of the mathematical model are given in Chapter 5. It is shown that xenon-133 experimental results are consistent with a diffusional explanation. The model is then applied to tritiated water where there is also good agreement between experiment and the diffusional model. The above chapters relate to fundamental properties of water in the vitreous. It has been suggested in the literature that because of hydrostatic pressure differences, a flow exists across the retina. This is examined in Chapter 6. The existing model for hydrostatic pressure-induced flow across the posterior layers of the eye is shown to be inadequate and a new model presented. No firm conclusion may be drawn concerning the magnitude and direction of this flow but it is thought that pressures are likely to equalise and prevent such a flow occurring. Aqueous humour leaves the eye through pores in the lining endothelium of Schlemm's canal. In Chapter 7, calculations of the pore fluid resistance are presented, based on different pore geometries. The contribution of the pore to the total outflow resistance is determined at different intraocular pressures and with and without treatment using pilocarpine.     Moving in an environment of induced sensorimotor incongruence does not influence pain sensitivity in healthy volunteers: A randomised within-subject experiment

    Objectives: It has been proposed that in the same way that conflict between vestibular and visual inputs leads to motion sickness, conflict between motor commands and sensory information associated with these commands may contribute to some chronic pain states. Attempts to test this hypothesis by artificially inducing a state of sensorimotor incongruence and assessing self-reported pain have yielded equivocal results. To help clarify the effect sensorimotor incongruence has on pain we investigated the effect of moving in an environment of induced incongruence on pressure pain thresholds (PPT) and the pain experienced immediately on completion of PPT testing. Methods: Thirty-five healthy subjects performed synchronous and asynchronous upper-limb movements with and without mirror visual feedback in random order. We measured PPT over the elbow and the pain evoked by testing. Generalised linear mixed-models were performed for each outcome. Condition (four levels) and baseline values for each outcome were within-subject factors. Results: There was no effect of condition on PPT (p = 0.887) or pressure-evoked pain (p = 0.771). A sensitivity analysis using only the first PPT measure after each condition confirmed the result (p = 0.867). Discussion: Inducing a state of movement related sensorimotor incongruence in the upper-limb of healthy volunteers does not influence PPT, nor the pain evoked by testing. We found no evidence that sensorimotor incongruence upregulates the nociceptive system in healthy volunteer

    Compact Radiative Control Structures for Millimeter Astronomy

    We have designed, fabricated, and tested compact radiative control structures, including antireflection coatings and resonant absorbers, for millimeter through submillimeter wave astronomy. The antireflection coatings consist of micromachined single crystal silicon dielectric sub-wavelength honeycombs. The effective dielectric constant of the structures is set by the honeycomb cell geometry. The resonant absorbers consist of pieces of solid single crystal silicon substrate and thin phosphorus implanted regions whose sheet resistance is tailored to maximize absorption by the structure. We present an implantation model that can be used to predict the ion energy and dose required for obtaining a target implant layer sheet resistance. A neutral density filter, a hybrid of a silicon dielectric honeycomb with an implanted region, has also been fabricated with this basic approach. These radiative control structures are scalable and compatible for use large focal plane detector arrays

    The efficacy of self-management strategies for females with endometriosis : a systematic review

    Self-management is critical for the care of endometriosis. Females with endometriosis frequently use self-management strategies to manage associated symptoms; however, the efficacy of such strategies is unknown. The aim of this review was to systematically appraise the evidence concerning efficacy of self-management strategies for endometriosis symptoms. Electronic databases, including Medline, Embase, Emcare, Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, were searched from inception to March 2021. We included peer-reviewed experimental studies published in English evaluating the efficacy of self-management strategies in human females laparoscopically diagnosed with endometriosis. Studies underwent screening, data extraction, and risk of bias appraisal (randomised studies: Risk of Bias 2 tool; non-randomised studies: Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies – of Interventions tool). Of the fifteen studies included, 10 evaluated dietary supplements, three evaluated dietary modifications, one evaluated over-the-counter medication, and one evaluated exercise. Most studies had a high-critical risk of bias. Many self-management strategies were not more effective at reducing endometriosis symptoms compared to placebo or hormonal therapies. Where studies suggest efficacy for self-management strategies, no recommendations can be made due to the poor quality and heterogeneity of evidence. High-quality empirical evidence is required to investigate the efficacy of self-management strategies for females with endometriosis

    Increased bone mineral density in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians: Impact of body composition differences

    Bone mineral density (BMD) has been reported to be both higher and lower in Indigenous women from different populations. Body composition data have been reported for Indigenous Australians, but there are few published BMD data in this population. We assessed BMD in 161 Indigenous Australians, identified as Aboriginal (n = 70), Torres Strait Islander (n = 68) or both (n = 23). BMD measurements were made on Norland-XR46 (n = 107) and Hologic (n = 90) dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) machines. Norland BMD and body composition measurements in these individuals, and also in 36 Caucasian Australians, were converted to equivalent Hologic BMD (BMDH) and body composition measurements for comparison

    Novel genetic resources associated with sucrose and stachyose content through genome-wide association study in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.)

    The nutritional value of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] for animals is influenced by soluble carbohydrates, such as sucrose and stachyose. Although sucrose is nutritionally desirable, stachyose is an antinutrient causing diarrhea and flatulence in non-ruminant animals. We conducted a genome-wide association study of 220 soybean accessions using 21,317 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from the SoySNP50K iSelect Beadchip data to identify significant SNPs associated with sucrose and stachyose content. Seven significant SNPs were identified for sucrose content across chromosomes (Chrs.) 2, 8, 12, 17, and 20, while thirteen significant SNPs were identified for stachyose content across Chrs. 2, 5, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, and 15. Among those significant SNPs, three sucrose-related SNPs on Chrs. 8 and 17 were novel, while twelve stachyose-related SNPs on Chrs. 2, 5, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, and 15 were novel. Based on Phytozome, STRING, and GO annotation, 17 and 24 candidate genes for sucrose and stachyose content, respectively, were highly associated with the carbohydrate metabolic pathway. Among these, the publicly available RNA-seq Atlas database highlighted four candidate genes associated with sucrose (Glyma.08g361200 and Glyma.17g258100) and stachyose (Glyma.05g025300 and Glyma.13g077900) content, which had higher gene expression levels in developing seed and multiple parts of the soybean plant. The results of this study will extend knowledge of the molecular mechanism and genetic basis underlying sucrose and stachyose content in soybean seed. Furthermore, the novel candidate genes and SNPs can be valuable genetic resources that soybean breeders may utilize to modify carbohydrate profiles for animal and human usage

    Comparing aerosol number and mass exhalation rates from children and adults during breathing, speaking and singing

    Aerosol particles of respirable size are exhaled when individuals breathe, speak and sing and can transmit respiratory pathogens between infected and susceptible individuals. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought into focus the need to improve the quantification of the particle number and mass exhalation rates as one route to provide estimates of viral shedding and the potential risk of transmission of viruses. Most previous studies have reported the number and mass concentrations of aerosol particles in an exhaled plume. We provide a robust assessment of the absolute particle number and mass exhalation rates from measurements of minute ventilation using a non-invasive Vyntus Hans Rudolf mask kit with straps housing a rotating vane spirometer along with measurements of the exhaled particle number concentrations and size distributions. Specifically, we report comparisons of the number and mass exhalation rates for children (12–14 years old) and adults (19–72 years old) when breathing, speaking and singing, which indicate that child and adult cohorts generate similar amounts of aerosol when performing the same activity. Mass exhalation rates are typically 0.002–0.02 ng s(−1) from breathing, 0.07–0.2 ng s(−1) from speaking (at 70–80 dBA) and 0.1–0.7 ng s(−1) from singing (at 70–80 dBA). The aerosol exhalation rate increases with increasing sound volume for both children and adults when both speaking and singing

    A New Era in Extragalactic Background Light Measurements: The Cosmic History of Accretion, Nucleosynthesis and Reionization

    (Brief Summary) What is the total radiative content of the Universe since the epoch of recombination? The extragalactic background light (EBL) spectrum captures the redshifted energy released from the first stellar objects, protogalaxies, and galaxies throughout cosmic history. Yet, we have not determined the brightness of the extragalactic sky from UV/optical to far-infrared wavelengths with sufficient accuracy to establish the radiative content of the Universe to better than an order of magnitude. Among many science topics, an accurate measurement of the EBL spectrum from optical to far-IR wavelengths, will address: What is the total energy released by stellar nucleosynthesis over cosmic history? Was significant energy released by non-stellar processes? Is there a diffuse component to the EBL anywhere from optical to sub-millimeter? When did first stars appear and how luminous was the reionization epoch?     A Prospective Study to Validate the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy (FACT) for Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Inhibitor (EGFRI)-induced Dermatologic Toxicities FACT-EGFRI 18 Questionnaire: SWOG S1013

    Background Papulopustular rash is a common class effect of epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (EGFRI) that can affect patients’ health-related quality of life and cause disruptions to treatment. SWOG S1013 (NCT01416688) is a multi-center study designed to validate the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy EGFRI 18 (FACT-EGFRI 18) using 7-items from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) version 4.0 to assess EGFRI-induced skin-related toxicities and their impact on functional status. Methods Patients with a diagnosis of colorectal or lung cancer to receive EGFRI therapies for at least 6 weeks were enrolled. Patient self-assessments using the FACT-EGFRI 18 were completed prior to undergoing CTCAE assessment by trained clinicians at baseline, weekly × 6, and then monthly × 3. The psychometric properties of the FACT-EGFRI 14 (skin toxicity items only) and 18 (plus 2 nail and 2 hair items) were established based on criterion validity, known groups validity, internal consistency reliability, and responsiveness to change. Results Of the 146 registered patients, 124 were evaluable. High Cronbach’s alpha (\u3e 0.70) for both FACT-EGFRI 14 and FACT-EGFRI 18 scores across assessment times were observed. Although agreement (i.e. criterion validity) between individual and summary scales of the FACT-EGFRI 18 for assessing skin toxicity was good, agreement with the clinician-reported CTCAE was only fair. The minimal important difference was determined to be 3 points. The results also demonstrated responsiveness to symptom change. Discussion Based on the results of this multi-center validation study, the FACT-EGFRI 18 patient-reported outcome instrument provided data from the patient’s perspective yielding unique information as well as complementing clinician-rated CTCAE grades, especially for the symptoms of pain, pruritus, and paronychia. Conclusions Good to excellent psychometric properties for the FACT-EGFRI 18 were demonstrated, supporting further use of this patient-reported outcomes measure.     The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Cosmology from Galaxy Clusters Detected via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect

    We present constraints on cosmological parameters based on a sample of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich-selected galaxy clusters detected in a millimeter-wave survey by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope. The cluster sample used in this analysis consists of 9 optically-confirmed high-mass clusters comprising the high-significance end of the total cluster sample identified in 455 square degrees of sky surveyed during 2008 at 148 GHz. We focus on the most massive systems to reduce the degeneracy between unknown cluster astrophysics and cosmology derived from SZ surveys. We describe the scaling relation between cluster mass and SZ signal with a 4-parameter fit. Marginalizing over the values of the parameters in this fit with conservative priors gives sigma_8 = 0.851 +/- 0.115 and w = -1.14 +/- 0.35 for a spatially-flat wCDM cosmological model with WMAP 7-year priors on cosmological parameters. This gives a modest improvement in statistical uncertainty over WMAP 7-year constraints alone. Fixing the scaling relation between cluster mass and SZ signal to a fiducial relation obtained from numerical simulations and calibrated by X-ray observations, we find sigma_8 = 0.821 +/- 0.044 and w = -1.05 +/- 0.20. These results are consistent with constraints from WMAP 7 plus baryon acoustic oscillations plus type Ia supernoava which give sigma_8 = 0.802 +/- 0.038 and w = -0.98 +/- 0.053. A stacking analysis of the clusters in this sample compared to clusters simulated assuming the fiducial model also shows good agreement. These results suggest that, given the sample of clusters used here, both the astrophysics of massive clusters and the cosmological parameters derived from them are broadly consistent with current models.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures.
