Interacting bosons in an optical lattice: Bose-Einstein condensates and Mott insulator
A dense Bose gas with hard-core interaction is considered in an optical
lattice. We study the phase diagram in terms of a special mean-field theory
that describes a Bose-Einstein condensate and a Mott insulator with a single
particle per lattice site for zero as well as for non-zero temperatures. We
calculate the densities, the excitation spectrum and the static structure

New measurements of the cosmic infrared background fluctuations in deep Spitzer/IRAC survey data and their cosmological implications
We extend previous measurements of cosmic infrared background (CIB)
fluctuations to ~ 1 deg using new data from the Spitzer Extended Deep Survey.
Two fields, with depths of ~12 hr/pixel over 3 epochs, are analyzed at 3.6 and
4.5 mic. Maps of the fields were assembled using a self-calibration method
uniquely suitable for probing faint diffuse backgrounds. Resolved sources were
removed from the maps to a magnitude limit of AB mag ~ 25, as indicated by the
level of the remaining shot noise. The maps were then Fourier-transformed and
their power spectra were evaluated. Instrumental noise was estimated from the
time-differenced data, and subtracting this isolates the spatial fluctuations
of the actual sky. The power spectra of the source-subtracted fields remain
identical (within the observational uncertainties) for the three epochs
indicating that zodiacal light contributes negligibly to the fluctuations.
Comparing to 8 mic power spectra shows that Galactic cirrus cannot account for
the fluctuations. The signal appears isotropically distributed on the sky as
required for an extragalactic origin. The CIB fluctuations continue to diverge
to > 10 times those of known galaxy populations on angular scales out to < 1
deg. The low shot noise levels remaining in the diffuse maps indicate that the
large scale fluctuations arise from the spatial clustering of faint sources
well below the confusion noise. The spatial spectrum of these fluctuations is
in reasonable agreement with an origin in populations clustered according to
the standard cosmological model (LCDM) at epochs coinciding with the first

Impaired Spatial Reorientation in the 3xTg-AD Mouse Model of Alzheimer's Disease.
In early Alzheimer's disease (AD) spatial navigation is impaired; however, the precise cause of this impairment is unclear. Recent evidence suggests that getting lost is one of the first impairments to emerge in AD. It is possible that getting lost represents a failure to use distal cues to get oriented in space. Therefore, we set out to look for impaired use of distal cues for spatial orientation in a mouse model of amyloidosis (3xTg-AD). To do this, we trained mice to shuttle to the end of a track and back to an enclosed start box to receive a water reward. Then, mice were trained to stop in an unmarked reward zone to receive a brain stimulation reward. The time required to remain in the zone for a reward was increased across training, and the track was positioned in a random start location for each trial. We found that 6-month female, but not 3-month female, 6-month male, or 12-month male, 3xTg-AD mice were impaired. 6-month male and female mice had only intracellular pathology and male mice had less pathology, particularly in the dorsal hippocampus. Thus, AD may cause spatial disorientation as a result of impaired use of landmarks
Timing and causes of North African wet phases during the last glacial period and implications for modern human migration
We present the first speleothem-derived central North Africa rainfall record for the last glacial period. The record reveals three main wet periods at 65-61 ka, 52.5-50.5 ka and 37.5-33 ka that lead obliquity maxima and precession minima. We find additional minor wet episodes that are synchronous with Greenland interstadials. Our results demonstrate that sub-tropical hydrology is forced by both orbital cyclicity and North Atlantic moisture sources. The record shows that after the end of a Saharan wet phase around 70 ka ago, North Africa continued to intermittently receive substantially more rainfall than today, resulting in favourable environmental conditions for modern human expansion. The encounter and subsequent mixture of Neanderthals and modern humans – which, on genetic evidence, is considered to have occurred between 60 and 50 ka – occurred synchronously with the wet phase between 52.5 and 50.5 ka. Based on genetic evidence the dispersal of modern humans into Eurasia started less than 55 ka ago. This may have been initiated by dry conditions that prevailed in North Africa after 50.5 ka. The timing of a migration reversal of modern humans from Eurasia into North Africa is suggested to be coincident with the wet period between 37.5 and 33 ka
Differential geometry, Palatini gravity and reduction
The present article deals with a formulation of the so called (vacuum)
Palatini gravity as a general variational principle. In order to accomplish
this goal, some geometrical tools related to the geometry of the bundle of
connections of the frame bundle are used. A generalization of
Lagrange-Poincar\'e reduction scheme to these types of variational problems
allows us to relate it with the Einstein-Hilbert variational problem. Relations
with some other variational problems for gravity found in the literature are

The disappearing hand: vestibular stimulation does not improve hand localisation.
Bodily self-consciousness depends on the coherent integration of sensory information. In addition to visual and somatosensory information processing, vestibular contributions have been proposed and investigated. Vestibular information seems especially important for self-location, but remains difficult to study.
This randomised controlled experiment used the MIRAGE multisensory illusion box to induce a conflict between the visually- and proprioceptively-encoded position of one hand. Over time, the perceived location of the hand slowly shifts, due to the fact that proprioceptive input is progressively weighted more heavily than the visual input. We hypothesised that left cold caloric vestibular stimulation (CVS) augments this shift in hand localisation.
The results from 24 healthy participants do not support our hypothesis: CVS had no effect on the estimations with which the perceived position of the hand shifted from the visually- to the proprioceptively-encoded position. Participants were more likely to report that their hand was 'no longer there' after CVS. Taken together, neither the physical nor the subjective data provide evidence for vestibular enhanced self-location
Evaluation of the in vitro oral wound healing effects of pomegranate (Punica granatum) rind extract and punicalagin, in combination with Zn (II)
Pomegranate (Punica granatum) is a well-established folklore medicine, demonstrating benefits in treating numerous conditions partly due to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Such desirable medicinal capabilities are attributed to a high hydrolysable tannin content, especially punicalagin. However, few studies have evaluated the abilities of pomegranate to promote oral healing, during situations such as periodontal disease or trauma. Therefore, this study evaluated the antioxidant and in vitro gingival wound healing effects of pomegranate rind extract (PRE) and punicalagin, alone and in combination with Zn (II). In vitro antioxidant activities were studied using DPPH and ABTS assays, with total PRE phenolic content measured by Folin–Ciocalteu assay. PRE, punicalagin and Zn (II) combination effects on human gingival fibroblast viability/proliferation and migration were investigated by MTT assay and scratch wounds, respectively. Punicalagin demonstrated superior antioxidant capacities to PRE, although Zn (II) exerted no additional influences. PRE, punicalagin and Zn (II) reduced gingival fibroblast viability and migration at high concentrations, but retained viability at lower concentrations without Zn (II). Fibroblast speed and distance travelled during migration were also enhanced by punicalagin with Zn (II) at low concentrations. Therefore, punicalagin in combination with Zn (II) may promote certain anti-inflammatory and fibroblast responses to aid oral healin
Tactile acuity training for patients with chronic low back pain: a pilot randomised controlled trial
BACKGROUND: Chronic pain can disrupt the cortical representation of a painful body part. This disruption may play a role in maintaining the individual’s pain. Tactile acuity training has been used to normalise cortical representation and reduce pain in certain pain conditions. However, there is little evidence for the effectiveness of this intervention for chronic low back pain (CLBP). The primary aim of this study was to inform the development of a fully powered randomised controlled trial (RCT) by providing preliminary data on the effect of tactile acuity training on pain and function in individuals with CLBP. The secondary aim was to obtain qualitative feedback about the intervention. METHODS: In this mixed-methods pilot RCT 15 individuals were randomised to either an intervention (tactile acuity training) or a placebo group (sham tactile acuity training). All participants received 3 sessions of acuity training (intervention or sham) from a physiotherapist and were requested to undertake daily acuity home training facilitated by an informal carer (friend/relative). All participants also received usual care physiotherapy. The primary outcome measures were pain (0-100visual analogue scale (VAS)) and function (Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ)). Participants and their informal carers were invited to a focus group to provide feedback on the intervention. RESULTS: The placebo group improved by the greatest magnitude for both outcome measures, but there was no statistically significant difference (Mean difference (95%CI), p-value) between groups for change in pain (25.6 (-0.7 to 51.9), p = 0.056) or function (2.2 (-1.6 to 6.0), p = 0.237). Comparing the number of individuals achieving a minimally clinically significant improvement, the placebo group had better outcomes for pain with all participants achieving ≥30% improvement compared to only a third of the intervention group (6/6 vs. 3/9, p = 0.036). Qualitatively, participants reported that needing an informal carer was a considerable barrier to the home training component of the study. CONCLUSIONS: This pilot RCT found tactile acuity training to be no more effective than sham tactile acuity training for function and less effective for pain in individuals with CLBP. That the intervention could not be self-applied was a considerable barrier to its use. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ISRCTN: ISRCTN9811808
Design and Fabrication of Electrostatically Actuated Silicon Microshutters Arrays
We have developed a new fabrication process to actuate microshutter arrays (MSA) electrostatically at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The microshutters are fabricated on silicon with thin silicon nitride membranes. A pixel size of each microshutter is 100 x 200 micrometers 2. The microshutters rotate 90 degrees on torsion bars. The selected microshutters are actuated, held, and addressed electrostatically by applying voltages on the electrodes the front and back sides of the microshutters. The atomic layer deposition (ALD) of aluminum oxide was used to insulate electrodes on the back side of walls; the insulation can withstand over 100 V.
