Food activities and identity maintenance in old age: a systematic review and meta-synthesis
This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund. Objectives: Services provided to older people should be developed based on active ageing policies. Nutrition is one aspect of active ageing, but little is known about how food activities contribute to psychological well-being in later life. This is a systematic review of qualitative and quantitative research that answers the question âWhat is known about the relationship between food activities and the maintenance of identities in old age?â
Power-law distributions and Levy-stable intermittent fluctuations in stochastic systems of many autocatalytic elements
A generic model of stochastic autocatalytic dynamics with many degrees of
freedom is studied using computer simulations. The time
evolution of the 's combines a random multiplicative dynamics at the individual level with a global coupling through a
constraint which does not allow the 's to fall below a lower cutoff given
by , where is their momentary average and is a
constant. The dynamic variables are found to exhibit a power-law
distribution of the form . The exponent
is quite insensitive to the distribution of the random factor
, but it is non-universal, and increases monotonically as a function
of . The "thermodynamic" limit, N goes to infty and the limit of decoupled
free multiplicative random walks c goes to 0, do not commute:
for any finite while (which is the common range
in empirical systems) for any positive . The time evolution of exhibits intermittent fluctuations parametrized by a (truncated)
L\'evy-stable distribution with the same index . This
non-trivial relation between the distribution of the 's at a given time
and the temporal fluctuations of their average is examined and its relevance to
empirical systems is discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Supersymmetry Breaking and Fermi Balls
A simple model is presented where the disappearance of domain walls and the
associated production of ``Fermi balls'', which have been proposed as
candidates for cold dark matter, are features which arise rather naturally in
response to softly broken supersymmetry.Comment: 13 pages, revtex, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Measurement of the Positive Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment to 0.46 ppm
We present the first results of the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment for the
positive muon magnetic anomaly . The anomaly is
determined from the precision measurements of two angular frequencies.
Intensity variation of high-energy positrons from muon decays directly encodes
the difference frequency between the spin-precession and cyclotron
frequencies for polarized muons in a magnetic storage ring. The storage ring
magnetic field is measured using nuclear magnetic resonance probes calibrated
in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency
in a spherical water sample at 34.7C. The
ratio , together with known fundamental
constants, determines
(0.46\,ppm). The result is 3.3 standard deviations greater than the standard
model prediction and is in excellent agreement with the previous Brookhaven
National Laboratory (BNL) E821 measurement. After combination with previous
measurements of both and , the new experimental average of
(0.35\,ppm) increases the
tension between experiment and theory to 4.2 standard deviationsComment: 10 pages; 4 figure
Aging and well-being in Goa, India: a qualitative study
Objectives: The population of India is aging rapidly. This demographic shift brings with it a host of challenges to the health and well-being of older adults, including the increased prevalence of non-communicable diseases, among them depressive disorders. In this paper, we report on qualitative research intended to inform the development of a locally acceptable and appropriate intervention to improve the well-being of older adults in Goa, India and, specifically, to prevent late-life depression. Method: Semi-structured interviews with 20 individuals, aged 60Â years and older, attending two primary care clinics in Goa, India. Transcripts were reviewed to identify emerging themes, a coding scheme was developed and thematic analyses were conducted. Results: Analyses of the interview transcripts revealed the following key themes: (1) notions of old age tended to be negative and there were widespread fears of becoming widowed or incapacitated; (2) the most frequently reported health conditions were joint pain, diabetes and heart disease; (3) emotional distress was described using the terms âtensionâ, âstressâ, âworryâ and âthinkingâ; (4) family issues often involved financial matters, difficult relationships with daughters-in-law and conflicted feelings about living with the family or independently; (5) other than a pension scheme, participants did not know of community resources available to older adults. Conclusions: Our findings are in general agreement with those of previous research, and with our experiences of working with older adults in Pittsburgh and the Netherlands. This research will inform the development of an intervention to prevent depression in older adults in Goa
