    Optical IFU Observations of GOALS Sample with KOOLS-IFU on Seimei Telescope: Initial results of 9 U/LIRGs at z<z < 0.04

    We present ionized gas properties of 9 local ultra/luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) at z<z < 0.04 through IFU observations with KOOLS-IFU on Seimei Telescope. The observed targets are drawn from the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS), covering a wide range of merger stages. We successfully detect emission lines such as Hβ\beta, [OIII]λ\lambda5007, Hα\alpha, [NII]λλ\lambda\lambda6549,6583, and [SII]λλ\lambda\lambda6717,6731 with a spectral resolution of RR = 1500-2000, which provides (i) spatially-resolved (\sim200-700 pc) moment map of ionized gas and (ii) diagnostics for active galactic nucleus (AGN) within the central \sim3--11 kpc in diameter for our sample. We find that [OIII] outflow that is expected to be driven by AGN tends to be stronger (i) towards the galactic center and (ii) as a sequence of merger stage. In particular, the outflow strength in the late-stage (stage D) mergers is about 1.5 times stronger than that in the early-state (stage B) mergers, which indicates that galaxy mergers could induce AGN-driven outflow and play an important role in the co-evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, and 2 tables, accepted for publication in PAS

    Multicenter, single-blind, randomized controlled study of the efficacy and safety of favipiravir and nafamostat mesilate in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia

    Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of nafamostat combined with favipiravir for the treatment of COVID-19. Methods: We conducted a multicenter, randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel assignment study in hospitalized patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 pneumonia. Patients were randomly assigned to receive favipiravir alone (n = 24) or nafamostat with favipiravir (n = 21). The outcomes included changes in the World Health Organization clinical progression scale score, time to improvement in body temperature, and improvement in oxygen saturation (SpO2). Results: There was no significant difference in the changes in the clinical progression scale between nafamostat with favipiravir and favipiravir alone groups (median, -0.444 vs -0.150, respectively; least-squares mean difference, -0.294; P = 0.364). The time to improvement in body temperature was significantly shorter in the combination group (5.0 days; 95% confidence interval, 4.0-7.0) than in the favipiravir group (9.0 days; 95% confidence interval, 7.0-18.0; P =0.009). The changes in SpO2 were greater in the combination group than in the favipiravir group (0.526% vs -1.304%, respectively; least-squares mean difference, 1.831; P = 0.022). No serious adverse events or deaths were reported, but phlebitis occurred in 57.1% of the patients in the combination group. Conclusion: Although our study showed no differences in clinical progression, earlier defervescence, and recovery of SpO2 were observed in the combination group

    Differences in energy source storage in eye stalks between two species of stalk-eyed flies, Sphyracephala detrahens and Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni

    Some diopsid flies have sexually dimorphic eye stalks that are assumed to require considerable nutrition for growth but are advantageous in competition and courtship. According to the handicap theory, the eye span in some dimorphic species serves as a reliable signal of individual quality to an opponent. However, it is not well understood how well eye span represents energy source storage. In this study, we focused on two species: Sphyracephala detrahens, which has weak dimorphism, and Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni, which has moderate dimorphism. We found that the eye stalks of the former species contained more fat bodies than those of the latter species. When the flies were starved, the fat body cells in the eye stalks underwent autophagy. A strong positive correlation was consistently found between eye span and starvation tolerance for S. detrahens, while a weak correlation was found for C. dalmanni. Furthermore, starvation decreased the contest winning rate between S. detrahens pairs with similar eye spans. These findings suggest that the presentation of resource holding potential may be larger than the actual storage ability and that the fidelity of nutritional storage signaling varies; the signal presented by S. detrahens is more reliable than that presented by C. dalmanni

    Kluyvera intermedia bacteremia with septic shock: A case report

    Background: Kluyvera intermedia is a bacterium indigenous to humans. But Kluyvera intermedia bacteremia has been not reported thus far. We report a case of Kluyvera intermedia bacteremia with septic shock due to left obstructive pyelonephritis as a result of urolithiasis. Case presentation: A 66-year-old woman with septic shock due to left obstructive pyelonephritis was transferred to our hospital. Tazobactam/Piperacillin 4.5 g was administered every 8 h for 5 days. The patient's condition improved, and she was transferred back to the previous hospital. Kluyvera intermedia was obtained by blood cultures. The patient was successfully treated with a two-week course of antibiotics. Conclusions: We describe the first case of bacteremia with septic shock caused by Kluyvera intermedia. Kluyvera intermedia can be a causative pathogen of septic shock. Since this bacterium has not been reported in the past, we expect further reports and the accumulation of cases in the future

    Effects of strong magnetic fields on pairing fluctuations in high-temperature superconductors

    We present the theory for the effects of superconducting pairing fluctuations on the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 and the NMR Knight shift for layered superconductors in high magnetic fields. These results can be used to clarify the origin of the pseudogap in high-Tc cuprates, which has been attributed to spin fluctuations as well as pairing fluctuations. We present theoretical results for s-wave and d-wave pairing fluctuations and show that recent experiments in optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7-δ are described by d-wave pairing fluctuations [V. F. Mitrovic et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 2784 (1999); H. N. Bachman et al. (unpublished)]. In addition, we show that the orthorhombic distortion in YBa2Cu3O7-δ accounts for an experimentally observed discrepancy between 1/T1 obtained by nuclear quadrupole resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance at low field. We propose an NMR experiment to distinguish a fluctuating s-wave order parameter from a fluctuating strongly anisotropic order parameter, which may be applied to the system Nd2-xCexCuO4-δ and possibly other layered superconductors.
