He and Ne ages of large presolar silicon carbide grains: Solving the recoil problem
Knowledge about the age of presolar grains provides important insights into
Galactic chemical evolution and the dynamics of grain formation and destruction
processes in the Galaxy. Determination from the abundance of cosmic ray
interaction products is straightforward, but in the past has suffered from
uncertainties in correcting for recoil losses of spallation products. The
problem is less serious in a class of large (tens of micrometer) grains. We
describe the correction procedure and summarise results for He and Ne ages of
presolar SiC "Jumbo" grains that range from close to zero to ~850 Myr, with the
majority being less than 200 Myr. We also discuss the possibility of extending
our approach to the majority of smaller SiC grains and explore possible

"I feel I have been taken seriously" Women's experience of greater trochanteric pain syndrome treatment-A nested qualitative study
BACKGROUND: Women experiencing greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) report high levels of pain and reduced quality of life. Exploring how they manage GTPS in a daily life context can provide important knowledge about individual coping strategies. Education, extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) and exercise have good group level evidence for efficacy in clinical trials and are increasingly used in routine care for patients with GTPS. Exploring women’s experiences of such treatment may help understand the mechanisms underpinning these positive results and inform treatment strategies. We therefore aimed to explore how women with GTPS experience and manage their daily life, and their experience of the combined treatment of education, ESWT and exercises. METHODS: This qualitative study was nested within a cohort study based in a hospital outpatient clinic and a physiotherapy clinic in Denmark assessing the combined treatment of education, ESWT and exercises. Data was collected from eleven women using in-person, individual, semi-structured interviews which were audio recorded. Transcripts were coded and analysed using an inductive thematic analysis approach. FINDINGS: Five themes were identified: (1) Daily life was controlled and structured by pain; (2) The condition was acknowledged and taken seriously by treating professionals; (3) The participants´ experiences of the intervention–information is key; (4) Improved capability and autonomy in pain management and (5) The women´s perspectives on improving and expanding the intervention. Learning how to manage pain was experienced as the most important element of the program to the women to be able to minimize pain and manage daily life. CONCLUSION: Exploration of how women with greater trochanteric pain syndrome experienced and managed daily hip pain, and how they experienced and adapted to treatment are important novel findings that will inform clinical practice. This new knowledge may be used to inform an individualized patient education, treatment and evaluation strategy for women with the painful and debilitating condition of GTPS
The Local Universe as Seen in Far-Infrared and in Far-Ultraviolet: A Global Point of View on the Local Recent Star Formation
We select far-infrared (FIR-60 microns) and far-ultraviolet (FUV-1530 A)
samples of nearby galaxies in order to discuss the biases encountered by
monochromatic surveys (FIR or FUV). Very different volumes are sampled by each
selection and much care is taken to apply volume corrections to all the
analyses. The distributions of the bolometric luminosity of young stars are
compared for both samples: they are found to be consistent with each other for
galaxies of intermediate luminosities but some differences are found for high
(>5 10^{10} L_sun) luminosities. The shallowness of the IRAS survey prevents us
from securing comparison at low luminosities (<2 10^9 L_sun). The ratio of the
total infrared (TIR) luminosity to the FUV luminosity is found to increase with
the bolometric luminosity in a similar way for both samples up to 5 10^{10}
L_sun. Brighter galaxies are found to have a different behavior according to
their selection: the L_TIR/L_FUV ratio of the FUV-selected galaxies brighter
than 5 10^{10} L_sun reaches a plateau whereas L_TIR/L_FUV continues to
increase with the luminosity of bright galaxies selected in FIR. The
volume-averaged specific star formation rate (SFR per unit galaxy stellar mass,
SSFR) is found to decrease toward massive galaxies within each selection. The
SSFR is found to be larger than that measured for optical and NIR-selected
sample over the whole mass range for the FIR selection, and for masses larger
than 10^{10} M_sun for the FUV selection. Luminous and massive galaxies
selected in FIR appear as active as galaxies with similar characteristics

UV and EUV Instruments
We describe telescopes and instruments that were developed and used for
astronomical research in the ultraviolet (UV) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV)
regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The wavelength ranges covered by these
bands are not uniquely defined. We use the following convention here: The EUV
and UV span the regions ~100-912 and 912-3000 Angstroem respectively. The
limitation between both ranges is a natural choice, because the hydrogen Lyman
absorption edge is located at 912 Angstroem. At smaller wavelengths,
astronomical sources are strongly absorbed by the interstellar medium. It also
marks a technical limit, because telescopes and instruments are of different
design. In the EUV range, the technology is strongly related to that utilized
in X-ray astronomy, while in the UV range the instruments in many cases have
their roots in optical astronomy. We will, therefore, describe the UV and EUV
instruments in appropriate conciseness and refer to the respective chapters of

Paternity analysis of pollen-mediated gene flow for Fraxinus excelsior L. in a chronically fragmented landscape
Paternity analysis based on microsatellite marker genotyping was used to infer contemporary genetic connectivity by pollen of three population remnants of the wind-pollinated, wind-dispersed tree Fraxinus excelsior, in a deforested Scottish landscape. By deterministically accounting for genotyping error and comparing a range of assignment methods, individual-based paternity assignments were used to derive population-level estimates of gene flow. Pollen immigration into a 300ha landscape represents between 43% and 68% of effective pollination, mostly depending on assignment method. Individual male reproductive success is unequal, with 31 of 48 trees fertilising one seed or more, but only three trees fertilising more than ten seeds. Spatial analysis suggests a fat-tailed pollen dispersal curve with 85% of detected pollination occurring within 100m, and 15% spreading between 300m and 1900m from the source. Identification of immigrating pollen sourced from two neighbouring remnants indicates further effective dispersal at 2900m. Pollen exchange among remnants is driven by population size rather than geographic distance, with larger remnants acting predominantly as pollen donors, and smaller remnants as pollen recipients. Enhanced wind dispersal of pollen in a barren landscape ensures that the seed produced within the catchment includes genetic material from a wide geographic area. However, gene flow estimates based on analysis of non-dispersed seeds were shown to underestimate realised gene immigration into the remnants by a factor of two suggesting that predictive landscape conservation requires integrated estimates of post-recruitment gene flow occurring via both pollen and seed
