Impact of tunnel barrier strength on magnetoresistance in carbon nanotubes
We investigate magnetoresistance in spin valves involving CoPd-contacted
carbon nanotubes. Both temperature and bias voltage dependence clearly indicate
tunneling magnetoresistance as the origin. We show that this effect is
significantly affected by the tunnel barrier strength, which appears to be one
reason for the variation between devices previously detected in similar
structures. Modeling the data by means of the scattering matrix approach, we
find a non-trivial dependence of the magnetoresistance on the barrier strength.
Furthermore, analysis of the spin precession observed in a nonlocal Hanle
measurement yields a spin lifetime of ns, a value comparable

Comparing the Atmospheres of Mercury and the Earth's Moon
The exospheres of Mercury and the Earth's Moon are fundamentally similar, but the differences that do exist between them can help us to develop a better understanding of the processes at work on the two bodies that produce and remove volatiles. The major differences are derived from (1) the different compositions of the two surfaces, (2) the different particle and field em'ironments above the surface of each body (particularly the presence of intrinsic magnetic field of Mercury), and (3) the larger flux of interplanetary dust incident at the orbit of Mercury. The first difference, surface composition, is the most intractable problem, but the most challenging part of that problem, the composition of the Hermean regolith, may be at least partially addressed as the MESSENGER mission completes work over the next year. Much progress has been made with respect to exploring the second difference above--spacecraft such as Helios, Ulysses, WIND, and ACE have measured the solar wind and its composition both in Earth orbit and at distances encompassing the orbit of Mercury. While our knowledge of the solar wind is incomplete, again it is far more detailed than a simple 1/R(sup 2) law would predict. Another problem is that of the flux of charged particles to the surfaces. While Mercury's magnetosphere is the subject of current study with MESSENGER, the influx of charged particles on the Moon has gone beyond a cos (psi) picture, where psi is the solar zenith angle. We know that the influx of ions at the Moon is affected by magnetic anomalies, by craters, and by surface charging. The third external difference is the differing flux of interplanetary dust incident on the two surfaces. In this talk we will consider: (1) the species that one can compare now for these two exospheres (Na, K, and He); (2) the species that you might be able to compare with future measurements (Ca and Mg); arid (3) how intensive ground-based observations of the easiest lunar species to observe from the ground, Na and K, might help us address source processes at work on both surfaces. High throughput genomic sequencing of bioaerosols in broiler chicken production facilities
Chronic inhalation exposure to agricultural dust promotes the development of chronic respiratory diseases among poultry workers. Poultry dust is composed of dander, chicken feed, litter bedding and microbes. However, the microbial composition and abundance has not been fully elucidated. Genomic DNA was extracted from settled dust and personal inhalable dust collected while performing litter sampling or mortality collection tasks. DNA libraries were sequenced using a paired-end sequencing-by-synthesis approach on an Illumina HiSeq 2500. Sequencing data showed that poultry dust is predominantly composed of bacteria (64–67%) with a small quantity of avian, human and feed DNA (\u3c 2% of total reads). Staphylococcus sp. AL1, Salinicoccus carnicancri and Lactobacillus crispatus were the most abundant bacterial species in personal exposure samples of inhalable dust. Settled dust had a moderate relative abundance of these species as well as Staphylococcus lentus and Lactobacillus salivarius. There was a statistical difference between the microbial composition of aerosolized and settled dust. Unlike settled dust composition, aerosolized dust composition had little variance between samples. These data provide an extensive analysis of the microbial composition and relative abundance in personal inhalable poultry dust and settled poultry dust

Purpose: A survey of UK Special School Speech & Language Therapists (SLT) and school staff regarding the use of mealtime mats to provide eating and drinking guidelines.
Method: Two questionnaires were developed to collect experiences of creating and using mealtime mats within UK special schools including benefits and disadvantages of this method, training provided and improvement suggestions. SLTs (11) completed an online survey and education staff members of a UK special school (25) completed a paper questionnaire. The data was analysed using descriptive statistics and reviewing the free text comments.
Results: SLTs reported usage of mealtime mats with many utilising similar formats and areas of advice covered. Some aspects received less focus e.g. communication and environment. SLTs reported difficulties in continuing to provide mealtime mats, despite being positive about their usage, due to increased service pressures. This was often without active evaluation of the effectiveness of mealtime mats. Only 2 school staff members reported using mealtime mat and they had a different name. Other school staff were aware of the mats but did not support children with complex dysphagia. However they reported that a mealtime mat resource for children with autism would be useful.
Conclusions: This survey has shown that mealtime mats are being utilised within UK special schools and are viewed positively. However there is variety in usage in terms of name, format, content and evaluation. Research to determine the effectiveness of mealtime mats in special schools and other settings, including how to implement them, would be beneficial
Implementing a Secure Annotation Service
Annotation systems enable "value-adding" to digital resources by the attachment of additional data in the form of comments, explanations, references, reviews, corrections and other types of external, subjective remarks. They facilitate group discourse and capture collective intelligence by enabling communities to attach and share their views on particular data and documents accessible over the Web. Annotation systems vary greatly with regard to the types of content they annotate, the extent of collaboration and sharing they allow and the communities which they serve. However within many applications, there is a need to restrict access to the annotations to a particular group of trusted users - in order to protect intellectual property rights or personal privacy. This paper describes a secure, open source annotation system that we have developed that uses Shibboleth and XACML to identify and authenticate users and restrict their access to annotations stored on an Annotea server
Orbit transfer rocket engine integrated control and health monitoring system technology readiness assessment
The objectives of this task were to: (1) estimate the technology readiness of an integrated control and health monitoring (ICHM) system for the Aerojet 7500 lbF Orbit Transfer Vehicle engine preliminary design assuming space based operations; and (2) estimate the remaining cost to advance this technology to a NASA defined 'readiness level 6' by 1996 wherein the technology has been demonstrated with a system validation model in a simulated environment. The work was accomplished through the conduct of four subtasks. In subtask 1 the minimally required functions for the control and monitoring system was specified. The elements required to perform these functions were specified in Subtask 2. In Subtask 3, the technology readiness level of each element was assessed. Finally, in Subtask 4, the development cost and schedule requirements were estimated for bringing each element to 'readiness level 6'
Continuous Diffraction of Molecules and Disordered Molecular Crystals
The diffraction pattern of a single non-periodic compact object, such as a
molecule, is continuous and is proportional to the square modulus of the
Fourier transform of that object. When arrayed in a crystal, the coherent sum
of the continuous diffracted wave-fields from all objects gives rise to strong
Bragg peaks that modulate the single-object transform. Wilson statistics
describe the distribution of continuous diffraction intensities to the same
extent that they apply to Bragg diffraction. The continuous diffraction
obtained from translationally-disordered molecular crystals consists of the
incoherent sum of the wave-fields from the individual rigid units (such as
molecules) in the crystal, which is proportional to the incoherent sum of the
diffraction from the rigid units in each of their crystallographic
orientations. This sum over orientations modifies the statistics in a similar
way that crystal twinning modifies the distribution of Bragg intensities. These
statistics are applied to determine parameters of continuous diffraction such
as its scaling, the beam coherence, and the number of independent wave-fields
or object orientations contributing. Continuous diffraction is generally much
weaker than Bragg diffraction and may be accompanied by a background that far
exceeds the strength of the signal. Instead of just relying upon the smallest
measured intensities to guide the subtraction of the background it is shown how
all measured values can be utilised to estimate the background, noise, and
signal, by employing a modified "noisy Wilson" distribution that explicitly
includes the background. Parameters relating to the background and signal
quantities can be estimated from the moments of the measured intensities. The
analysis method is demonstrated on previously-published continuous diffraction

Superconducting Diamond on Silicon Nitride for Device Applications
Chemical vapour deposition (CVD) grown nanocrystalline diamond is an
attractive material for the fabrication of devices. For some device
architectures, optimisation of its growth on silicon nitride is essential.
Here, the effects of three pre-growth surface treatments, often employed as
cleaning methods of silicon nitride, were investigated. Such treatments provide
control over the surface charge of the substrate through modification of the
surface functionality, allowing for the optimisation of electrostatic diamond
seeding densities. Zeta potential measurements and X-ray photoelectron
spectroscopy (XPS) were used to analyse the silicon nitride surface following
each treatment. Exposing silicon nitride to an oxygen plasma offered optimal
surface conditions for the electrostatic self-assembly of a hydrogen-terminated
diamond nanoparticle monolayer. The subsequent growth of boron-doped
nanocrystalline diamond thin films on modified silicon nitride substrates under
CVD conditions produced coalesced films for oxygen plasma and solvent
treatments, whilst pin-holing of the diamond film was observed following RCA-1
treatment. The sharpest superconducting transition was observed for diamond
grown on oxygen plasma treated silicon nitride, demonstrating it to be of the
least structural disorder. Modifications to the substrate surface optimise the
seeding and growth processes for the fabrication of diamond on silicon nitride
devices
