Spectral properties of compact normal quaternionic operators

General, especially spectral, features of compact normal operators in quaternionic Hilbert spaces are studied and some results are established which generalize well-known properties of compact normal operators in complex Hilbert spaces. More precisely, it is proved that the norm of such an operator always coincides with the maximum of the set of absolute values of the eigenvalues (exploiting the notion of spherical eigenvalue). Moreover the structure of the spectral decomposition of a generic compact normal operator $T$ is discussed also proving a spectral characterization theorem for compact normal operators.Comment: 11 pages, no figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1207.066

Sex hormones in allergic conjunctivitis: altered levels of circulating androgens and estrogens in children and adolescents with vernal keratoconjunctivitis

PURPOSE: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic allergic disease mainly affecting boys in prepubertal age and usually recovering after puberty. To evaluate a possible role of sex hormones in VKC, serum levels of sex hormones in children and adolescents with VKC were assessed. METHODS: 12 prepubertal and 7 early pubertal boys with active VKC and 6 male patients with VKC in remission phase at late pubertal age and 48 healthy age and sex-matched subjects were included. Serum concentration of estrone, 17 beta-estradiol, dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate, total testosterone and free testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), cortisol, delta-4-androstenedione, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, and sex-hormones binding globuline (SHBG) were evaluated. RESULTS: Serum levels of Estrone were significantly increased in all groups of patients with VKC when compared to healthy controls (P < 0.001). Prepubertal and early pubertal VKC showed a significant decrease in DHT (P = 0.007 and P = 0.028, resp.) and SHBG (P = 0.01 and P = 0.002, resp.) when compared to controls and serum levels of SHBG were increased in late pubertal VKC in remission phase (P = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: VKC patients have different circulating sex hormone levels in different phases of the disease and when compared to nonallergic subjects. These findings suggest a role played by sex hormones in the pathogenesis and/or activity of VKC

Analytic continuation of nucleon electromagnetic form factors in the time-like region

The possibility to compute nucleon electromagnetic form factors in the time-like region by analytic continuation of their space-like expressions has been explored in the framework of the Skyrme model. We have developed a procedure to solve analytically Fourier transforms of the nucleon electromagnetic current and hence to obtain form factors defined in all kinematical regions and fulfilling the first-principles requirements. The results are discussed and compared to data, both in space-like and time-like region.Comment: 34 pages, 15 figure

Il comparto del turismo sportivo sta continuando la sua crescita sia qualitativa che dimensionale in tutto il mondo. Il turismo legato ai grandi eventi sportivi presenta tuttavia forti barriere all’entrata in termini economici ed infrastrutturali, mentre il turismo sportivo praticato sta superando la massa critica propria delle forme di nicchia, per acquisire anche nel nostro paese una dimensione economicamente e territorialmente rilevante, senza che tale sviluppo imponga significative economie di scala. In questa prospettiva sta assumendo rilievo l'organizzazione delle Maratone internazionali, manifestazioni in cui la componente agonistica si somma a quella della pratica non competitiva, capaci di generare flussi finanziari significativi. Il fattore di vero vantaggio competitivo, in questo frangente, è rappresentato dalla capacità di saper raccontare e proporre le qualità del proprio territorio in modo efficace. Fetal-Maternal Exposure to Endocrine Disruptors: Correlation with Diet Intake and Pregnancy Outcomes

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are exogenous substances able to mimic or to interfere with the endocrine system, thus altering key biological processes such as organ development, reproduction, immunity, metabolism and behavior. High concentrations of EDCs are found in several everyday products including plastic bottles and food containers and they could be easily absorbed by dietary intake. In recent years, considerable interest has been raised regarding the biological effects of EDCs, particularly Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, on human pregnancy and fetal development. Several evidence obtained on in vitro and animal models as well as by epidemiologic and population studies strongly indicated that endocrine disruptors could negatively impact fetal and placental health by interfering with the embryonic developing epigenome, thus establishing disease paths into adulthood. Moreover, EDCs could cause and/or contribute to the onset of severe gestational conditions as Preeclampsia (PE), Fetal Growth Restriction (FGR) and gestational diabetes in pregnancy, as well as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular complications in reproductive age. Therefore, despite contrasting data being present in the literature, endocrine disruptors must be considered as a therapeutic target. Future actions aimed at reducing or eliminating EDC exposure during the perinatal period are mandatory to guarantee pregnancy success and preserve fetal and adult health

A.R.T. Ancient Rome Tour 2.0 Upgraded How Nero Saved Rome

[IT] La presentazione di Altair4 ad Arquelogica 2.0 consiste essenzialmente nella presentazione delle ultime produzioni su Roma Antica, attraverso la proiezione di alcune animazioni tratte da "How Nero Saved Rome" film in HD per National Geographic Channel e Il Foro Romano e i Fori Imperiali per la trasmissione RAI Ulisse. Queste produzioni si inquadrano nell'ambito del progetto pluriennale A.R.T. (Ancient Rome Tour). Il progetto nasce nel 1998 con il proposito di creare nuovi strumenti di comunicazione per la conoscenza della storia della costruzione della città di Roma e degli eventi ad essa collegati. Dopo dieci anni dalla prima pubblicazione si è deciso di operare un significativo aggiornamento dei contenuti della parte più monumentale della città, il palatino, il foro romano, i fori imperiali e la valle del colosseo, area un tempo in gran parte occupata dalla fastosa residenza dell'imperatore Nerone: La Domus Aurea. In questi dieci anni infatti si sono raccolti e analizzati i risultati di alcune importanti attività di scavo e ricerca svolte da diverse istituzioni e istituti di ricerca concretizzati in un impegnativo lavoro di sintesi visuale con gli strumenti della computer grafica 3D cercando di restituire una unità spaziale ad un'area che risulta oggi estremamente frammentata e di difficile lettura.Moretti, S.; Furlan, A.
