Explosions Triggered by Violent Binary-Star Collisions: Application to Eta Carinae and other Eruptive Transients
This paper discusses a model where a violent periastron collision of stars in
an eccentric binary system induces an eruption or explosion seen as a brief
transient source, attributed to LBVs, SN impostors, or other transients. The
key ingredient is that an evolved primary increases its photospheric radius on
relatively short timescales, to a point where the radius is comparable to or
larger than the periastron separation in an eccentric binary. In such a
configuration, a violent and sudden collision would ensue, possibly leading to
substantial mass ejection instead of a binary merger. Repeated periastral
grazings in an eccentric system could quickly escalate to a catastrophic
encounter, wherein the companion star actually plunges deep inside the
photosphere of a bloated primary during periastron, as a result of the primary
star increasing its own radius. This is motivated by the case of
Carinae, where such a collision must have occured if conventional estimates of
the present-day orbit are correct, and where brief peaks in the light curve
coincide with periastron. Stellar collisions may explain brief recurring LBV
outbursts like SN 2000ch and SN 2009ip, and perhaps outbursts from relatively
low-mass progenitor stars (collisons are not necessarily the exclusive domain
of very luminous stars). Finally, mass ejections induced repeatedly at
periastron cause orbital evolution; this may explain the origin of very
eccentric colliding-wind Wolf-Rayet binaries such as WR140.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, submitted to MNRAS letters. fixed erro

Modeling Cascading Failures in the North American Power Grid
The North American power grid is one of the most complex technological
networks, and its interconnectivity allows both for long-distance power
transmission and for the propagation of disturbances. We model the power grid
using its actual topology and plausible assumptions about the load and overload
of transmission substations. Our results indicate that the loss of a single
substation can lead to a 25% loss of transmission efficiency by triggering an
overload cascade in the network. We systematically study the damage inflicted
by the loss of single nodes, and find three universal behaviors, suggesting
that 40% of the transmission substations lead to cascading failures when
disrupted. While the loss of a single node can inflict substantial damage,
subsequent removals have only incremental effects, in agreement with the
topological resilience to less than 1% node loss.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Tamm states in one dimensional photonic crystals containing left-handed materials
We present a theoretical study of electromagnetic surface waves localized at
an interface separating a conventional uniform medium and a semi-infinite 1-D
photonic crystal made of alternate left-handed metamaterial and right-handed
material which we refer to as left-handed photonic crystal. We find novel type
of surface mode's structure, the so-called surface Tamm states and demonstrate
that the presence of metamaterial in the photonic crystal structure allows for
a flexible control of the dispersion properties of surface states, and can
support the Tamm states with a backward energy flow and a vortex-like
structure.Comment: 8pages, 5 figure

Positive aging, positive dying: Intersectional and daily communicational issues surrounding palliative and end of life care services in minority groups in the UK and the US
As our global demographic shifts towards an increasingly aging population, we have an opportunity to transform how we experience and think about getting older and embrace the diversity and contribution that this population can bring to society. The International Handbook of Positive Aging showcases the latest research and theory into aging, examining the various challenges faced by older adults and the ways in which we can bring a much needed positive focus towards dealing with these.
The handbook brings together disparate research from medical, academic, economic and social community fields, with contributions from NHS partners, service users, universities across the UK and collaborations with international research leaders in the field of aging.
Divided into sections, the first part of the book focuses on introducing the concept of positive aging before going on to cover the body over the life course, well-being and care delivery. All contributors recognise the fact that we are living longer is providing us with a tremendous opportunity to enjoy and flourish in healthy and fulfilling later lives, and this focus on the importance of patient empowerment is integral to the book.
This is a valuable reference source for those working in developmental psychology, clinical psychology, mental health, health sciences, medicine, neuropsychological rehabilitation, sociology, anthropology, social policy and social work. It will help encourage researchers, professionals and policy makers to make the most of opportunities and innovations to promote a person’s sense of independence, dignity, well-being, good health and society participation as they get older
Strengthening the reading and writing process through the Glenn Doman method with the participation of parents, in first grade students of the Gonzalo Rivera Laguado School

This study corresponds to a participatory research-action, of qualitative type, formed in chapters that demonstrate the problem and their respective solutions. The research design was developed through the following stages: Construction of the work route and design of instruments, key informant interview and interpretation of the information, which was carried out through the initial and emergent categorization, coming from the application of an instrument type in-depth interview with key informants, in this case, six parents and representatives of the first degree of the selected educational institution. According to the testimonies of the same, they demonstrated the presence of problems in the integration of parents and representatives to the reading process in the students in activities developed in the home, a series of actions were planned and developed with the participation of the involved actors , in order to carry out demonstrations for the execution of teaching techniques, through awareness sessions on the importance of the Glenn Doman method for language development, where motivational strategies based on integration are highlighted as a technique for the improvement of the levels of participation. Finally, the results of the project were socialized with the educational community and the project was left immersed in an institutional improvement plan that will be implemented in all the areas, courses and headquarters of the Educational Institution
Self-Organized Criticality in a Fibre-Bundle type model
The dynamics of a fibre-bundle type model with equal load sharing rule is
numerically studied. The system, formed by N elements, is driven by a slow
increase of the load upon it which is removed in a novel way through internal
transfers to the elements broken during avalanches. When an avalanche ends,
failed elements are regenerated with strengths taken from a probability
distribution. For a large enough N and certain restrictions on the distribution
of individual strengths, the system reaches a self-organized critical state
where the spectrum of avalanche sizes is a power law with an exponent
