An edeine resistant mRNA-dependent protein synthesis system from a Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutant

    Get PDF
AbstractA cell-free protein synthesizing system from a mutant of Saccharomyces cerevisiae translated exogenous mRNA in the presence of 2μM edeine, while a similar system from wild-type strain was completely inhibited by the drug. The mutant ribosomes showed an affinity for [125I]edeine comparable to the wild-type ribosomes, thereby suggesting that these macromolecules alone were not responsible for the edeine-resistant capacity of the mutant

Wetting phenomenon in the liquid-vapor phase coexistence of a partially miscible Lennard-Jones binary mixture

We have carried out extensive equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the structure and the interfacial properties in the liquid-vapor (LV) phase coexistence of partially miscible binary Lennard-Jones (LJ) mixtures. By analyzing the structural properties as a function of the miscibility parameter, α \alpha , we found that at relatively low temperatures the system separates forming a liquid A-liquid B interface in coexistence with the vapor phase. At higher temperatures and, 0<α0.5 0<\alpha\leq 0.5 , we found a temperature range, Tw(α)T<Tcons(α)T^{*}_{w}(\alpha) \leq T^{*} < T^{*}_{cons}(\alpha), where the liquid phases are wet by the vapor phase. Here, Tw(α) T^{*}_{w}(\alpha) represents the wetting transition temperature (WTT) and Tcons(α)T^{*}_{cons}(\alpha) is the consolute temperature of the mixture. However, for 0.5<α<1 0.5< \alpha < 1, no wetting phenomenon occurs. For the particular value, α=0.25 \alpha=0.25 , we analyzed quantitatively the TT^{*} versus ρ\rho^{*}, and P P^{*} versus T T^{*} phase diagrams and found, Tc1.25 T^{*}_{c}\simeq 1.25 , and Tcons1.25T^{*}_{cons}\simeq1.25. We also studied quantitatively, as a function of temperature, the surface tension and the adsorption of molecules at the liquid-liquid interface. It was found that the adsorption shows a jump from a finite negative value up to minus infinity, when the vapor wets the liquid phases, suggesting that the wetting transition (WT) is of first order. The calculated phase diagram together with the wetting phenomenon strongly suggest the existence of a tricritical point. These results agree well with some experiments carried out in fluid binary mixtures.Comment: Enlarged version that include results of more extensive simulations. Effectiveness of a recent topical sialogogue in the management of drug-induced xerostomia

Objectives: Use of certain drugs is the most common aetiology of xerostomia. Systemic sialogogues provide a longer effect than topic ones, but also induce relevant side effects. Topical sialogogues, as malic acid, allow a safe use as they induce no systemic side-effects or pharmacological interactions, being especially interesting in cases of mild hyposalivation and oral dryness, mainly the chronic use of xerostomizing drugs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical effect of 1% malic acid in patients affected by xerostomia due to antihypertensives or antidepressants. Study Design: 10 patients with drug-induced xerostomia were prospectively evaluated before and after using malic acid spray during three weeks. Xerostomia Inventory (XI) was used to evaluate subjective improvement. Unstimulated and stimulated salivary flow rates were determinated. Results: Severity significantly decreased, from 38.22 to 31.00 points (p = 0.011) after using the product. 77.8% of subjects did not complain about xerostomia at the end and 66.6% achieved an improvement > 6 points. Unstimulated flow rate singnificantly increased, from 0.163 to 0.226 mL/min (p = 0.021) at the third week. Conclusions: 1% malic acid spray induces some improvement in the management of mild and reversible xerostomia. Carrying out of randomized controlled trials is justified according to this study

    D. Camas, F.V. Antunes, B. Moreno, A. Gonzalez-Herrera, Numerical analysis of the influence of the last cycle scheme on plasticity induced crack closure, Book of Abstracts of the 3rd International Conference on Structural Integrity, pp. 185.Plasticity induced crack closure is considered the main mechanism related to the premature contact of the crack flanks when a crack grows under cyclic loadings. This phenomenon has been studied numerically since the early 70s, when some researchers approached to metal fatigue problems by means of the finite element analysis. The numerical analysis requires the development of a plastic wake. How this plastic wake is developed has influence on the crack closure results and a great impact on the computational cost. When running a finite element analysis, it is not possible to consider all the loading cycles involved in an experimental test. The numerical effort is not acceptable. Therefore, in this work, the crack growth scheme is analyzed. In particular, the influence of the number of loading cycles after releasing the last set of nodes on plasticity induced crack closure results is studied. A CT aluminum specimen has been modelled three-dimensionally and several simulations have been run to evaluate the influence of the loading cycles after releasing the last set of nodes. The numerical analysis is made in terms of crack closure and opening values.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

Introduction. Presents the first bibliometric study on the evolution of the fuzzy sets theory field. It is specially focused on the research carried out by the Spanish comunity. Method. The CoPalRed software, for network analysis, and the co-word analysis technique are used. Analysis. Bibliometric maps showing the main associations among the main concepts in the field are provided for the periods 1965-1993, 1994-1998, 1999-2003 and 2004-2008. Results. The bibliometric maps obtained provide insight into the structure of the fuzzy sets theory research in the Spanish community, visualize the research subfields, and show the existing relationships between those subfields. Furthermore, we compare the Spanish community with other countries (the USA and Canada; the UK and Germany; and Japan and Peoples Republic of China). Conclusions. As a result of the analysis, a complete study of the evolution of the Spanish fuzzy sets community and an analysis of its international importance are presented.Introducción.
