Analysis of the performance of a flexible winglet in the presence of gusts

Current aviation faces the paramount challenge of continuing with the actual trend of decreasing the fuel consumption of new generation aircraft. In order to confront such a hurdle, new modern and renewed aircraft designs appear every year. One of these ad-vancements has been the incorporation of the so-called winglets at the aircraft wingtips, which decrease the fuel consumption due to their reduction of the induced Drag. The objective of the current project is to find the load alleviation that a flexible winglet yields in the presence of gusts. This abatement of the loads can imply a lighter structure, and a consequent decrease of the fuel consumption. The presented model consists on a simplified structural model in which the only variable is the stiffness of a torsion spring which is allocated between the wing and the winglet. In order to accomplish such a goal, the CFD solver CFX is used to compute the aerodynamics. The final conclusion of the project is that the more flexible the winglet is, the higher assuagement of loads in the presence of a gust is discovered. Besides, it is needed a feasi-bility study of the implementation of the new proposed design in structural and aeroelastic terms.Ingeniería Aeroespacia

Características operativas de los puntajes TIMI y GRACE en pacientes con síndrome coronario agudo sin elevación del ST atendidos en el servicio de urgencias de la Clínica los Rosales durante el año 2015

"La ciencia de la incertidumbre, el arte de las probabilidades", así describió en alguna ocasión Sir. William Osler a la medicina; esta corta frase demuestra el nivel de duda que deben tolerar y contemplar en cada momento los médicos. Esto ha llevado al desarrollo de herramientas para definir en un momento determinado y con la mejor información disponible el futuro del enfermo. Múltiples son las herramientas utilizadas por el médico en esta tarea; puntajes como el CURB 65 (Predicción de mortalidad en pacientes con neumonía; a mayor puntaje el paciente se beneficiaría de ingreso a hospitalización o unidad de cuidado intensivo), HAS-BLED (Pronostica riesgo de sangrado mayor en usuarios de warfarina por fibrilación auricular; un puntaje alto indica que se debe prestar más atención al seguimiento del paciente o intervenir en factores modificable), WELLS (Determina la probabilidad de padecer un embolismo pulmonar; según el puntaje obtenido se definirá una estrategia diagnóstica diferente), y PADUA (Determina el beneficio de profilaxis trombótica en pacientes hospitalizados no quirúrgicos), son utilizadas todos los días para brindar el mejor cuidado a los pacientes. Este trabajo evalúo las características operativas de dos de los principales puntajes creados para la estratificación del riesgo en pacientes con síndrome coronario agudo sin elevación del ST en una población específica de Pereira. Su importancia radica en el alta prevalencia e incidencia de la enfermedad cardiovascular en el departamento de Risaralda y en el desconocimiento de la real utilidad de puntajes ajenos a las características demográficas, clínicas, y sociales de nuestra población, por lo que conocer su verdadero valor ayudará en la evaluación inicial de los pacientes con esta patología

Informative regions in viral genomes

Viruses, far from being just parasites affecting hosts\u27 fitness, are major players in any microbial ecosystem. In spite of their broad abundance, viruses, in particular bacteriophages, remain largely unknown since only about 20% of sequences obtained from viral community DNA surveys could be annotated by comparison with public databases. In order to shed some light into this genetic dark matter we expanded the search of orthologous groups as potential markers to viral taxonomy from bacteriophages and included eukaryotic viruses, establishing a set of 31,150 ViPhOGs (Eukaryotic Viruses and Phages Orthologous Groups). To do this, we examine the non-redundant viral diversity stored in public databases, predict proteins in genomes lacking such information, and used all annotated and predicted proteins to identify potential protein domains. The clustering of domains and unannotated regions into orthologous groups was done using cogSoft. Finally, we employed a random forest implementation to classify genomes into their taxonomy and found that the presence or absence of ViPhOGs is significantly associated with their taxonomy. Furthermore, we established a set of 1457 ViPhOGs that given their importance for the classification could be considered as markers or signatures for the different taxonomic groups defined by the ICTV at the order, family, and genus levels

Effect of a mentoring through reflection program on the on the verbal behavior of beginner volleyball coaches: a case study

El propósito de este estudio fue modificar la conducta verbal del entrenador de voleibol durante la competición. Tres entrenadores de voleibol fueron sometidos a un programa formativo (feedback de supervisión con análisis sistemático de la conducta verbal del entrenador, y visionado de la actuación) durante una temporada de competición. La variable dependiente de la investigación fue la conducta verbal del entrenador durante los tiempos muertos, considerándose dos dimensiones en la misma: tipo de información, equipo al que hace referencia la información. Los resultados obtenidos muestran una modificación en la conducta verbal de los entrenadores, manifestada fundamentalmente en el incremento de información táctica y sobre el equipo contrario
