Paul Celan: Todesfuge
Alterity and Marginality in German Literature between XVIIIth and XIXth CenturiesOn the border between literature and music, Schumannâs poetics descends from Romantic culture, assimilated through the legacy of Goethe, E. T. A. Hoffmann and above all Jean Paul Richter, a sort of outsider. The use of fragmentary forms, the search for the inexpressible and for the borderline between genius and madness are all constant factors that Schumann draws from these authors and transports into his Lieder. Alterity, curiosity towards foreign cultures, and marginality, that is interest in those âshade areasâ crowded with heroic figures fighting a tragic battle with their destiny, are typical features of the German culture in which Schumann was born
