Foreign students abroad need to feel integrated in the new community, which includes complex learning processes in multicultural environments. The fact that we have experienced these processes ourselves was certainly a motivation for this research, especially knowing that we could contribute to help our fellow Portuguese brass players undergoing the same experience. From the singularity of music performance in the style of playing and communication emerge many cultural aspects, which have been developed through centuries of orchestral practice. As the new students are confronted with the aesthetic musical concepts and both professional and social practices of the country they arrive in, they strive to understand these concepts and adapt themselves to the values promoted by the new music practice. The aim of this on-going research is the study of the integration of brass music students in German universities and in the German society. Notably, through the understanding of intercultural processes experienced by the students, professors can become more aware of the challenges that concern music education. In this research all ten Portuguese brass students enrolled in any German music university in the last five years were interviewed in order to deeply understand this process. With a growing importance of the technological facilities, students are able to gather more information, to prepare themselves for the new concepts they try to embrace and to better deal with a different culture

Manager skill or luck? Assessing active management decisions through attribution analysis

O capítulo 4 contém as principais conclusões.Some say trading is just like gambling in a casino: there can be certain techniques, but the most important factor is luck. I have come across more than a handful of people stating similar assertions. How can there be portfolio managers such as Blackrock or J. P. Morgan with such reputation and so many clients? How is it that they reach better results than other managers do, consistently over time? This report does not provide a direct answer to the above question. However, it compiles the knowledge acquired over a three-month internship at Mercer related to performance measurement and its use to analyze the sources of excess return relative to a benchmark. The following dissertation has been written with the belief that a consistent positive excess return over time is an indicator of manager skill (Christopherson et. al., 1998). In practical terms, daily calculations of performance and risk measures provided a deeper understanding on the financial theory and the actual methods used in a professional environment. In this document, Chapter 1 introduces the basics about the internship and its purpose. Chapter 2 presents a description of the tasks undertaken at Mercer and the financial theory behind them. Chapter 3 contains a practical case of attribution analysis. Chapter 4 holds the main conclusions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

“Nobody is strange”: mobility and interculturality in higher education from the viewpoint of a group of Portuguese international music students

[EN] The benefits of mobility are often related to the development of skills and competences on the adaptation to new environments and organizational forms, foreign languages, and cultures in general. In the specific case of the international students, mobility enhances the view of the institution of higher education as a global and intercultural learning space, which promotes the exchange of ideas, resources and opportunities for experimentation, global citizenship and professional opportunities. Nowadays we assist to a rising number of international students, a fact that deserves special attention and makes us turn our interest to what our own (Portuguese) international students believe as being important not only in their actual experience, but also relevant in its intercultural dimension and their academic and professional success. Henceforth, after theoretical considerations about mobility and the intercultural experiences amidst the internationalization of higher education institutions, our communication presents part of the results of a broader study focused on viewpoints and perspectives of a group of Portuguese international music students, about their intercultural experience in a foreign country ant its relationship with academic success.Moreira, D.; Antão, G. Jumping AI for Unreal Engine

Pathfinding plays a vital role in video games, whether in terms of gameplay mechanics or player immersion. Commonly used methods only allow the simplest types of movements like walking and running. Although seldom, other types of movement, like swimming and flying, are also considered. Even rarer are mechanisms that natively contemplate jumps without the need of extra intervention of game developers. Most games overlook these movements on Non Player Characters, decreasing the realism of the experience. This dissertation discusses the limitations of Navigation Meshes when it comes to take jumps into consideration, while offering solutions to some of its problems. However, found solutions lack in automaticity, requiring high implementation times. In the interest of improving upon this problem, a new solution using grid-based any-angle pathfinding is proposed. In this approach, each cell of this navigation grid constitutes a voxel that delimits a small 3D space and is expressed in a shape of a cube. Voxels discretize the game world and are explored by a search algorithm to achieve pathfinding with jumps. In this context, performance is critical and the paths should be optimal and efficient. Results show that the voxel based solution can be successfully applied in game development and that it has relevant characteristics that could justify choosing this method over the navigation meshes alternatives for jumping

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a convoluted psychiatric disease that requires a considerable amount of health resources to be adequately treated. Previous studies have shown that pharmacotherapy can be advantageous for BPD. Within the drugs tested, second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) showed a more consistent positive effect in patients with BPD. However, the amount of evidence available at the time was insufficient to justify its recommendation. The aim of this systematic review is to qualitatively assess the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of SGAs in BPD patients currently available. Database searches were performed using MEDLINE, SCOPUS, ISI Web of Knowledge and PsycInfo. Study selection and data collection were carried out independently by two researchers. Out of 1294 records (without duplicates), nine studies were included in this review. The results confirm the findings of a previous review. Most SGAs show a significant decrease in various BPD symptoms in comparison to placebo. However, there was only one new study compared to the last review. Current findings suggest SGAs are effective against BPD and can serve as adjuvant therapy. Further RCTs are needed with larger samples and with several intervention arms

Relationship between carbohydrate composition and fungal deterioration of functional strawberry juices preserved using non-thermal treatments

BACKGROUND: The quantification of the main carbohydrates present in strawberry juices enriched with inulin and fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and preserved by non-thermal techniques (vanillin and ultrasound) were studied, as well as the evolution of these compounds and their relationship with fungal deterioration during 14 days of refrigerated storage. RESULTS: A simple and environmentally friendly analytical approach based on high performance liquid chromatography with reflection index detector was developed for simultaneous determination of inulin, FOS and mono and disaccharides present in the juices. When analyzing the evolution of carbohydrates during storage, a direct relationship between the consumption of sucrose and the growth of yeasts and molds (main spoilage flora in strawberry) was observed, especially in untreated samples (control). On the contrary, no sucrose consumption was observed during storage of treated sample, thus demonstrating the efficiency of the non-thermal treatments to control yeasts and molds growth. In turn, inulin and FOS added to juices were not degraded during storage. CONCLUSION: The results demonstrated that non-thermal treatments are adequate to prevent the growth of deteriorative flora in strawberry juices and adding inulin and FOS can be a good strategy to functionalize them, improving their nutritional properties.
