People counting system using existing surveillance video camera
The Casa da Música Foundation, responsible for the management of Casa da Música do Porto building, has the need to obtain statistical data related to the number of building’s visitors. This information is a valuable tool for the elaboration of periodical reports concerning the success of this cultural institution. For this reason it was necessary to develop a system capable of returning the number of visitors for a requested period of time.
This represents a complex task due to the building’s unique architectural design, characterized by very large doors and halls, and the sudden large number of people that pass through them in moments preceding and proceeding the different activities occurring in the building.
To achieve the technical solution for this challenge, several image processing methods, for people detection with still cameras, were first studied. The next step was the development of a real time algorithm, using OpenCV libraries and computer vision concepts,to count individuals with the desired accuracy. This algorithm includes the scientific and technical knowledge acquired in the study of the previous methods. The themes developed in this thesis comprise the fields of background maintenance, shadow and highlight detection, and blob detection and tracking.
A graphical interface was also built, to help on the development, test and tunning of the proposed system, as a complement to the work.
Furthermore, tests to the system were also performed, to certify the proposed techniques against a set of limited circumstances. The results obtained revealed that the algorithm was successfully applied to count the number of people in complex environments with reliable accuracy.

Switched Antenna Array for Maritime Communications
In this dissertation work, different antenna topologies are evaluated to find the best design capable of overcoming the difficulties of communications at high seas.
The impact of multiple design variables is studied, and their effects explained resorting to theoretical principles.
Furthermore, a switching matrix of eight sectors is also designed, so the antenna beam direction can be automatically reconfigured with the movement of the vessel.
The antenna and both the feeding and switching networks were designed and validated resorting to Finite Element Method in HFSS and the Method of Moments in ADS, respectively.
The final antenna element experimental results show a fractional impedance bandwidth of 22.3 %, an isolation between inputs above 45 dB and a gain of 7.5 dBi at the centre frequency of 5.15 GHz. Through simulation, it is shown that when the unit element is connected to the switching network, the fractional bandwidth remains unchanged.
Finally, the experimental measurements were compared with the simulated results of the unit cell and the entire system

Non-surgical treatments for androgenetic alopecia in adult men: indications, adverse effects and efficacy: Systematic Review
Background: Androgenetic alopecia is the most common cause of hair loss in
humans. It is mediated by dihydrotestosterone [DHT], a form of testosterone. It usually
appears in adolescence and tends to evolve into progressive hair loss that follows a
pattern distribution. The frequency of men suffering from androgenetic alopecia
increases with age, affecting up to 80 % of Caucasian men. In recent years, several
surgical and non-surgical treatments have been developed to treat and prevent this
condition.
Objective: Determine the efficacy and safety of existing non-surgical therapies for
androgenetic alopecia. This paper intends to summarize the therapeutic evidence of
these therapies, providing doctors with a tool that allows them to medicate their
patients based on the evidence shown.
Methods: A search was performed in PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane of clinical trials
published in English, dated between 2011 and 2021. The search strategy used was
“(Androgenetic alopecia AND ((therapeutics) OR (therapy) OR (treatment))”, with the
added filter of clinical trials involving only men over 18 years of age. The main outcome
was the evaluation of the effectiveness of the different therapies and the secondary
outcome was the analysis of the safety of these therapies.
Results: 14 studies were included in this systematic review, of which 11 are
randomized controlled trials and 3 are non-randomized clinical trials. Of these studies,
4 analysed the efficacy and safety of 5 alpha Reductase enzyme inhibitors, 5 addressed
minoxidil therapies, and 5 focused on the analysis of low-level laser therapy (LLLT).
These studies seem to demonstrate that the 3 therapies mentioned above have some
effectiveness in fighting androgenetic alopecia.
The adverse effects of these therapies are also described in the included studies,
however, to more precisely assess the safety level of the different treatments, further
studies are suggested.
It is also worth noting that 11 of the studies presented have a moderate risk of bias, 2
have a high risk of bias and 1 of the studies has a very high risk of bias. Conclusion: The analysed therapies seem to be promising in the treatment of
androgenetic alopecia, since all seem to demonstrate efficacy in this use.
pesquisa “(Androgenetic alopecia AND ((therapeutics) OR (therapy) OR (treatment))”,
Estes estudos parecem demonstrar
Induced pluripotent stem cell line (INSAi001-A) from a Gaucher disease type 3 patient compound heterozygote for mutations in the GBA1 gene
Gaucher Disease (GD) type 3 is a neurological form of a multisystemic autosomal recessive disorder belonging to the group of lysosomal storage diseases. Causal mutations in the glucocerebrosidase 1 (GBA1) commonly lead to abnormal protein and GD, heterozygosity is a genetic risk factor for Parkinson's disease. This work describes the use of a non-integrative approach using Sendai Virus delivery to establish induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSCs) from fibroblasts from a GD type 3 patient. Differentiation of iPSCs can be employed to generate a variety of complex cell types with a high degree of genetic complexity that would otherwise be unattainable.Funding Agency
