    Existence and optimal regularity theory for weak solutions of free transmission problems of quasilinear type via Leray-Lions method

    We study existence and regularity of weak solutions for the following PDE -\dive(A(x,u)|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u) = f(x,u),\;\;\mbox{in $B_1$}. where A(x,s)=A+(x)χ{s>0}+A(x)χ{s0}A(x,s) = A_+(x)\chi_{\{s>0\}}+A_-(x)\chi_{\{s\le 0\}} and f(x,s)=f+(x)χ{s>0}+f(x)χ{s0}f(x,s) = f_+(x)\chi_{\{s>0\}}+f_-(x)\chi_{\{s\le 0\}}. Under the ellipticity assumption that 1μA±μ\frac{1}{\mu}\le A_{\pm} \le \mu, A_{\pm}\in C(\O) and f_{\pm}\in L^N(\O), we prove that under appropriate conditions the PDE above admits a weak solution in W1,p(B1)W^{1,p}(B_1) which is also Cloc0,αC^{0,\alpha}_{loc} for every α(0,1)\alpha\in (0,1) with precise estimates. Our methods relies on similar techniques as those developed by Caffarelli to treat viscosity solutions for fully non-linear PDEs (c.f. \cite{C89}). Other key ingredients in our proofs are the \TT_{a,b} operator (which was introduced in \cite{MS22}) and Leray-Lions method (c.f. \cite{BM92}, \cite{MT03})

    Flipping regularity via the Harnack approach and applications to nonlinear elliptic problems

    We prove an abstract result ensuring that one-sided geometric control yields two-sided estimates for functions satisfying general conditions. Our findings resonate in the context of nonlinear elliptic problems, including supersolutions to fully nonlinear elliptic equations and functions in the De Giorgi class. Among the consequences of our abstract results are regularity estimates, and conditions for a continuous function to be in the class of viscosity solutions. We also prove that one-sided geometric control yields LpLL^pL^\infty-estimates. It provides a converse to the implication in the De Giorgi-Nash-Moser theory

    Overlooked gall-inducing moths revisited, with the description of Andescecidium parrai gen. et sp. n. and Oliera saizi sp. n. from Chile (Lepidoptera, Cecidosidae)

    There are still many gall systems associated with larvae of Lepidoptera in which the true gall-inducers have not been identified to species. Reports on misidentification of gall inducers have been recurrent for these galls, particularly in complex gall-systems that may include inquilines, kleptoparasites, and cecidophages, among other feeding guilds such as predators and parasitoid wasps. Here we describe and illustrate the adults, larvae, pupae and galls, based on light and scanning microscopy, of Andescecidium parrai gen. et sp. n. and Oliera saizi sp. n., two sympatric cecidosid moths that are associated with Schinus polygamus (Cav.) Cabrera (Anacardiaceae) in central Chile. Adults, immatures, and galls of the former did not conform to any known cecidosid genus. Galls of A. parrai are external, spherical, and conspicuous, being known for more than one century. However, their induction has been mistakenly associated with either unidentified Coleoptera (original description) or Oliera argentinana Br糨es (recently), a distinct cecidosid species with distribution restricted to the eastern Andes. Galls of O. saizi had been undetected, as they are inconspicuous. They occur under the bark within swollen stems, and may occur on the same plant, adjacent to those of A. parrai. We also propose a time-calibrated phylogeny using sequences from mitochondrial and nuclear loci, including specimens of the new proposed taxa. Thus in addition to clarifying the taxonomy of the Chilean cecidosid species we also tested their monophyly in comparison to congeneric species and putative specimens of all genera of Neotropical and African cecidosids.Fil: Silva, Gabriela T..     Phenotypic contrasts of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in women: Two case reports

    We discussed two cases of symptomatic female carriers to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The first case is a 20 year-old girl with classical phenotypic manifestation of the disease, similar to the condition in boys. The case 2 is a 62 year-old woman with progressive muscular weakness. The disease is much less common in woman than men so both cases described here are considered rare forms of the disease, with several clinical implications. In both cases, a progressive muscle weakness, impairment in walking and sleeping was observed, in addition to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and alveolar hypoventilation, that required noninvasive ventilatory support.     Working Memory Training Coupled With Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in Older Adults: A Randomized Controlled Experiment

    Background: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been employed to boost working memory training (WMT) effects. Nevertheless, there is limited evidence on the efficacy of this combination in older adults. The present study is aimed to assess the delayed transfer effects of tDCS coupled with WMT in older adults in a 15-day follow-up. We explored if general cognitive ability, age, and educational level predicted the effects. Methods: In this single-center, double-blind randomized sham-controlled experiment, 54 older adults were randomized into three groups: anodal-tDCS (atDCS)+WMT, sham-tDCS (stDCS)+WMT, and double-sham. Five sessions of tDCS (2 mA) were applied over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Far transfer was measured by Raven’s Advanced Progressive Matrices (RAPM), while the near transfer effects were assessed through Digit Span. A frequentist linear mixed model (LMM) was complemented by a Bayesian approach in data analysis. Results: Working memory training improved dual n-back performance in both groups submitted to this intervention but only the group that received atDCS+WMT displayed a significant improvement from pretest to follow-up in transfer measures of reasoning (RAPM) and short-term memory (forward Digit Span). Near transfer improvements predicted gains in far transfer, demonstrating that the far transfer is due to an improvement in the trained construct of working memory. Age, formal education, and vocabulary score seem to predict the gains in reasoning. However, Bayesian results do not provide substantial evidence to support this claim. Conclusion: This study will help to consolidate the incipient but auspicious field of cognitive training coupled with tDCS in healthy older adults. Our findings demonstrated that atDCS may potentialize WMT by promoting transfer effects in short-term memory and reasoning in older adults, which are observed especially at follow-up

    Wild dogs at stake: deforestation threatens the only Amazon endemic canid, the short-eared dog (Atelocynus microtis)

    The persistent high deforestation rate and fragmentation of the Amazon forests are the main threats to their biodiversity. To anticipate and mitigate these threats, it is important to understand and predict how species respond to the rapidly changing landscape. The short-eared dog Atelocynus microtis is the only Amazon-endemic canid and one of the most understudied wild dogs worldwide. We investigated short-eared dog habitat associations on two spatial scales. First, we used the largest record database ever compiled for short-eared dogs in combination with species distribution models to map species habitat suitability, estimate its distribution range and predict shifts in species distribution in response to predicted deforestation across the entire Amazon (regional scale). Second, we used systematic camera trap surveys and occupancy models to investigate how forest cover and forest fragmentation affect the space use of this species in the Southern Brazilian Amazon (local scale). Species distribution models suggested that the short-eared dog potentially occurs over an extensive and continuous area, through most of the Amazon region south of the Amazon River. However, approximately 30% of the short-eared dog's current distribution is expected to be lost or suffer sharp declines in habitat suitability by 2027 (within three generations) due to forest loss. This proportion might reach 40% of the species distribution in unprotected areas and exceed 60% in some interfluves (i.e. portions of land separated by large rivers) of the Amazon basin. Our local-scale analysis indicated that the presence of forest positively affected short-eared dog space use, while the density of forest edges had a negative effect. Beyond shedding light on the ecology of the short-eared dog and refining its distribution range, our results stress that forest loss poses a serious threat to the conservation of the species in a short time frame. Hence, we propose a re-assessment of the short-eared dog's current IUCN Red List status (Near Threatened) based on findings presented here. Our study exemplifies how data can be integrated across sources and modelling procedures to improve our knowledge of relatively understudied species

    Prognostic implications of the ID1 expression in acute myeloid leukemia patients treated in a resource-constrained setting

    Introduction: The aberrant expression of the inhibitor of DNA binding (ID1) gene has been frequently associated with the leukemogenesis and prognostication acute myeloid leukemia (AML), although its clinical importance has never been investigated in patients treated outside well-controlled clinical trials. Methods: Using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, we investigated the role of the ID1 expression in the clinical outcomes of non-selected patients with acute myeloid leukemia treated in a real-life setting. Results: Overall, 128 patients were enrolled. Patients with high ID1 expression had a lower 3-year overall survival (OS) rate of 9%, with the 95% confidence interval (95%CI) at 3 to 20%, compared to patients with a low ID1 expression (22%, 95%CI: 11 - 34%) (p = 0.037), although these findings did not retain significance after adjustment (hazard ratio (HR): 1.5, 95%CI: 0.98 - 2.28; p = 0.057). The ID1 expression had no impact on post-induction outcomes (disease-free survival, p = 0.648; cumulative incidence of relapse, p = 0.584). Conclusions: Although we are aware thar our data are confronted with many variables that cannot be fully controlled, including drug unavailability, risk-adapted treatment, comorbidities and the time from diagnosis to treatment initiation, we are firm believers that such an initiative can provide more realistic data on understudied populations, in particular those from low- and middle-income countries.</p
