Wijsman Hyperspaces: Subspaces and Embeddings
In this paper, topological properties of Wijsman hyperspaces are
investigated. We study the existence of isolated points in Wijsman hyperspaces.
We show that every Tychonoff space can be embedded as a closed subspace in the

Distribution of Pd clusters on ultrathin, epitaxial TiOx films on Pt3Ti(111)
Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) was used to investigate the nucleation and growth of palladium clusters on two different, ultrathin, epitaxial, titania films grown on a PtTi(111) surface. The first oxide phase, z\u27-TiO, is anisotropic and consists of parallel stripes separated by trenches. Defects (i.e., oxygen vacancies) in this structure are confined to these trenches and act as nucleation sites. Therefore, the Pd clusters are mostly arranged in unidirectional rows along the trenches, creating a template effect. The second phase, w\u27-TiO, exhibits a hexagonal, long range, (7 × 7)R21.8°, Moiré-type superstructure with fewer and shallower defects, making the template effect less discernible
Evaluation of European Land Data Assimilation System (ELDAS) products using in site observations
Three land-surface models with land-data assimilation scheme (DA) were evaluated for one growing season using in situ observations obtained across Europe. To avoid drifts in the land-surface state in the models, soil moisture corrections are derived from errors in screen-level atmospheric quantities. With the in situ data it is assessed whether these land-surface schemes produce adequate results regarding the annual range of the soil water content, the monthly mean soil moisture content in the root zone and evaporative fraction (the ratio of evapotranspiration to energy available at the surface). DA considerably reduced bias in net precipitation, while slightly reducing RMSE as well. Evaporative fraction was improved in dry conditions but was hardly affected in moist conditions. The amplitude of soil moisture variations tended to be underestimated. The impact of improved land-surface properties like Leaf Area Index, water holding capacity and rooting depth may be as large as corrections of the DA systems. Because soil moisture memorizes errors in the hydrological cycle of the models, DA will remain necessary in forecast mode. Model improvements should be balanced against improvements of DA per se. Model bias appearing from persistent analysis increments arising from DA systems should be addressed by model improvement
Reproducibility and intraindividual variation over days in buccal cell DNA methylation of two asthma genes, interferon γ (IFNγ) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS)
The biological mechanisms responsible for the onset and exacerbation of asthma symptoms in children may involve the epigenetic regulation of inflammatory genes after environmental exposures. Using buccal cells, we hypothesized that DNA methylation in promoter regions of two asthma genes, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and interferon γ (IFNγ), can vary over several days. Repeat buccal samples were collected 4 to 7 days apart from 34 children participating in the Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health (CCCEH) birth cohort study. Several field duplicates (sequential collection of two samples in the field) and replicates (one sample pyrosequenced twice) also were collected to ensure consistency with collection and laboratory procedures. DNA methylation was assessed by pyrosequencing a PCR of bisulfite-treated DNA. We found that replicate and field duplicate samples were correlated strongly (r = 0.86 to 0.99, P < 0.05), while repeat samples demonstrated low within-subject correlations (r = 0.19 to 0.56, P = 0.06 to 0.30). Our data reveal DNA methylation as a dynamic epigenetic mechanism that can be accessed safely and reproducibly in an inner city pediatric cohort using non-invasive buccal swabs and pyrosequencing technology
Internet Affairs: Partners’ Perceptions and Experiences of Internet Infidelity
This study utilizes an online survey (open and closed questions) to examine how those whose partners’ have engaged in online affairs define and experience online infidelity. As with offline affairs, respondents were most likely to define sexual (vs. emotional) behaviors as infidelity (e.g., cybersex, exchanging sexual self-images, sharing sexual fantasies online). However, thematic analysis of the qualitative data identified how online behaviors and spaces are confusing and that infidelity is defined more broadly and fluidly in the online context. This potentially explains why participants saw the Internet as facilitating affairs. Findings are discussed in relation to existing literature and study limitations

Analysis of Incident DKA in the Indiana New Onset T1D Patient Population
Background/Objective: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening complication of type 1 diabetes (T1D) resulting from ketone body production and metabolic acidosis occurring due to insulin deficiency. We sought to define the occurrence of DKA amongst pediatric patients presenting with new-onset T1D in Indiana and to determine whether patterns of DKA were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: This was a retrospective chart review for patients <18 years admitted to Riley Children’s Hospital with a clinical diagnosis of new onset T1D who had available chemistry values. Patients diagnosed from March 23- June 30, 2020 and over the same period in 2019 were included. DKA was classified as mild (bicarbonate 10-15 mmol/L) or severe (bicarbonate <10 mmol/L).
Results: Ninety-four patients met inclusion criteria. The total number of incident T1D cases in 2019 and 2020 were similar (48 vs. 46, respectively). Similarly, there was no significant difference in rates of DKA (21 in 2019 vs. 25 in 2020; p>0.05). Of the 94 patients, 49% met criteria for DKA; 79% of cases were classified as severe and 21% as mild. More males were diagnosed with DKA in both 2019 and 2020 (61% of DKA cases). Non-Hispanic whites comprised 75% of all new onset T1D patients and no differences in race or ethnicity were present amongst those presenting in DKA.
Conclusion: DKA was present in nearly half of all new onset pediatric T1D cases in Indiana in 2019 and 2020. There was no observed impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on T1D or DKA.
Impact and Implications: DKA is common amongst pediatric patients with new onset T1D in Indiana. Prompt recognition of symptoms is needed to prevent this life-threatening complication of T1D

Interfaces of nodal-line semimetals: Drum states, transport, and refraction
We study transport through interfaces in topological nodal-line semimetal (NLS), focusing on two geometries: a single interface between two large samples, one NLS and one metal, and an infinite NLS slab in between two metallic regions. We investigate the dependence of the spectra on the boundary conditions, showing how they affect the surface states and the band dispersion. We find a set of drum states, arising from the hybridization of the drumhead states on opposite surfaces at finite slab width, and describe their signatures in the transport properties of a clean sample. Finally, we compute the electronic trajectories in the ballistic regime and show that there is a series of resonant angles that ensure perfect transmission. We also show how the current density profile acquires an inhomogeneous distribution in the radial direction
