Trees in the production systems can effectively reduce hot weather-induced stress in the Brazilian Midwest. High temperatures cause changes in animals daily routine, and trees into pastures can promote benefits. The aim of this research was to evaluate the behavior of dairy heifers in silvopastoral systems in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. A herd of 24 crossbreed heifers (3/4 and 7/8 Holstein/Zebu), 350kg average weight, was evaluated over three seasons. Piatã grass was managed under three shade levels: full-sun, moderate-shade, and intensive-shade provided by 10 to 12m high Eucalyptus trees. Behavior data were collected every 15 minutes from 8:30h to 16h. Shade availability significantly impacted heifer behavior, mainly affecting grazing frequency and time during the hottest hours. Grazing behavior was affected by shade levels during the different seasons. Heifers showed preferred grazing times. Heifers in the intensive-shade system visited shady areas during the hottest hours throughout the seasons. Heifers in the full sun-system avoided grazing during the warmer times, ceasing feeding activities. Our results from the Brazilian Midwest showed that shade availability causes breed heifers to change their daily routine

Measurement of the CKM angle γ from a combination of B±→Dh± analyses

A combination of three LHCb measurements of the CKM angle γ is presented. The decays B±→D K± and B±→Dπ± are used, where D denotes an admixture of D0 and D0 mesons, decaying into K+K−, π+π−, K±π∓, K±π∓π±π∓, K0Sπ+π−, or K0S K+K− final states. All measurements use a dataset corresponding to 1.0 fb−1 of integrated luminosity. Combining results from B±→D K± decays alone a best-fit value of γ =72.0◦ is found, and confidence intervals are set γ ∈ [56.4,86.7]◦ at 68% CL, γ ∈ [42.6,99.6]◦ at 95% CL. The best-fit value of γ found from a combination of results from B±→Dπ± decays alone, is γ =18.9◦, and the confidence intervals γ ∈ [7.4,99.2]◦ ∪ [167.9,176.4]◦ at 68% CL are set, without constraint at 95% CL. The combination of results from B± → D K± and B± → Dπ± decays gives a best-fit value of γ =72.6◦ and the confidence intervals γ ∈ [55.4,82.3]◦ at 68% CL, γ ∈ [40.2,92.7]◦ at 95% CL are set. All values are expressed modulo 180◦, and are obtained taking into account the effect of D0–D0 mixing

Bcl-2 expression and its possible influence on malignant transformation of oral lichen planus

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the malignant potential of oral lichen planus (OLP) on the basis of the expression of the Bcl-2 marker in healthy individuals (H), patients with OLP and patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and to establish potential interdependence between expression of Bcl-2 and the different clinical and histopathological parameters in H, OLP, and SCC. Methods: Immunohistochemistry for Bcl-2 was carried out using an avidin-biotin peroxidase complex method. Tissue sections were treated with mouse monoclonal antibody against Bcl-2 (124, DAKO A/S, Denmark; dilution 1/100). Immunohistochemical parameters measured included total tissue area, total stained area and intensity of stain. Results: Keratinocytes were not Bcl-2 positive in H and were sparsely positive in OLP. The number of lymphocytes stained with Bcl-2 was significantly lower in Has compared to patients with SCC and OLP. Bcl-2 staining was weak to moderate in OLP, and moderate to intense in SCC. Bcl-2-positive lymphocytes were more expressed in older OLP patients (>55 years), and in OLP specimens with orthokeratinized epithelium, less developed acanthosis and highest grade of lymphocyte expression. Conclusion: Bcl-2 may not serve as a prognostic biomarker in oral cancer development from OLP, but it could help in selecting patients with higher need of follow up to prevent malignancy
