Semiparametric Curve Alignment and Shift Density Estimation: ECG Data Processing Revisited
We address in this contribution a problem stemming from functional data analysis. Assuming that we dispose of a large number of shifted recorded curves with identical shape, the objective is to estimate the time shifts as well as their distribution. Such an objective appears in several biological applications, for example in ECG signal processing. We are interested in the estimation of the distribution of elapsed durations between repetitive pulses, but wish to estimate it with a possibly low signal-to-noise ratio, or without any knowledge of the pulse shape. This problem is solved within a semiparametric framework, that is without any knowledge of the shape. We suggest an M-estimator leading to two different algorithms whose main steps are as follows: we split our dataset in blocks, on which the estimation of the shifts is done by minimizing a cost criterion, based on a functional of the periodogram. The estimated shifts are then plugged into a standard density estimator. Some theoretical insights are presented, which show that under mild assumptions the alignment can be done efficiently. Results are presented on simulations, as well as on real data for the alignment of ECG signals, and these algorithms are compared to the methods used by practitioners in this framework. It is shown in the results that the presented method outperforms the standard ones, thus leading to a more accurate estimation of the average heart pulse and of the distribution of elapsed times between heart pulses, even in the case of low Signal-to- Noise Ratio (SNR)
Fast Digital Filtering of Spectrometric Data for Pile-up Correction
International audienceThis paper considers a problem stemming from the analysis of spectrometric data. When performing experiments on highly radioactive matter, electrical pulses recorded by the spectrometer tend to overlap, thus yielding severe distortions when computing the histogram of the pulses' energies. In this paper, we propose a fast recursive algorithm which estimates efficiently this histogram from measurements of the duration and energies of overlapping pulses. Its good performances are shown both on simulations and real data. Furthermore, its lower algorithmic complexity makes it more fitting for real-time implementation
A High-Resolution Combined Scanning Laser- and Widefield Polarizing Microscope for Imaging at Temperatures from 4 K to 300 K
Polarized light microscopy, as a contrast-enhancing technique for optically
anisotropic materials, is a method well suited for the investigation of a wide
variety of effects in solid-state physics, as for example birefringence in
crystals or the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE). We present a microscopy
setup that combines a widefield microscope and a confocal scanning laser
microscope with polarization-sensitive detectors. By using a high numerical
aperture objective, a spatial resolution of about 240 nm at a wavelength of 405
nm is achieved. The sample is mounted on a He continuous flow cryostat
providing a temperature range between 4 K and 300 K, and electromagnets are
used to apply magnetic fields of up to 800 mT with variable in-plane
orientation and 20 mT with out-of-plane orientation. Typical applications of
the polarizing microscope are the imaging of the in-plane and out-of-plane
magnetization via the longitudinal and polar MOKE, imaging of magnetic flux
structures in superconductors covered with a magneto-optical indicator film via
Faraday effect or imaging of structural features, such as twin-walls in
tetragonal SrTiO. The scanning laser microscope furthermore offers the
possibility to gain local information on electric transport properties of a
sample by detecting the beam-induced voltage change across a current-biased
sample. This combination of magnetic, structural and electric imaging
capabilities makes the microscope a viable tool for research in the fields of

Irus and his jovial crew : representations of beggars in Vincent Bourne and other eighteenth-century writers of Latin verse
Alastair Fowler has written, with reference to the time of Milton, of ‘Latin's special role in a bilingual culture’, and this was still true in the early eighteenth century. The education of the elite placed great emphasis on the art of writing Latin verse and modern, as well as ancient, writers of Latin continued to be widely read. Collections of Latin verse, by individual writers such as Vincent Bourne (c. 1694–1747) or by groups such as Westminster schoolboys or bachelors of Christ Church, Oxford, could run into multiple editions, and included poems on a wide range of contemporary topics, as well as reworkings of classical themes. This paper examines a number of eighteenth-century Latin poems dealing with beggars, several of which are here translated for the first time. Particular attention is paid to the way in which the Latin poems recycled well-worn tropes about beggary which were often at variance with the experience of real-life beggars, and to how the specificities of Latin verse might heighten negative representations of beggars in a genre which, as a manifestation of elite culture, appealed to the very class which was politically and legally responsible for controlling them
Measuring service quality and assessing its relationship to contraceptive discontinuation: A prospective cohort study in Pakistan and Uganda
Background: The quality of contraceptive counseling that women receive from their provider can influence their future contraceptive continuation. We examined (1) whether the quality of contraceptive service provision could be measured in a consistent way by using existing tools from 2 large-scale social franchises, and (2) whether facility quality measures based on these tools were consistently associated with contraceptive discontinuation.Methods: We linked existing, routinely collected facility audit data from social franchise clinics in Pakistan and Uganda with client data. Clients were women aged 15-49 who initiated a modern, reversible contraceptive method from a sampled clinic. Consented participants completed an exit interview and were contacted 3, 6, and 12 months later. We collapsed indicators into quality domains using theory-based categorization, created summative quality domain scores, and used Cox proportional hazards models to estimate the relationship between these quality domains and discontinuation while in need of contraception.Results: The 12-month all-modern method discontinuation rate was 12.5% among the 813 enrolled women in Pakistan and 5.1% among the 1,185 women in Uganda. We did not observe similar associations between facility-level quality measures and discontinuation across these 2 settings. In Pakistan, an increase in the structural privacy domain was associated with a 60% lower risk of discontinuation, adjusting for age and baseline method (PP=.005).Conclusions: We were not able to leverage existing, widely used quality measurement tools to create quality domains that were consistently associated with discontinuation in 2 study settings. Given the importance of contraceptive service quality and recent advances in indicator standardization in other areas, we recommend further effort to harmonize and simplify measurement tools to measure and improve contraceptive quality of care for all

Milionella subrotunda (Montague 1803), a miliolid foraminifer building large agglutinated tubes for a temporary epibenthic livestyle.
Live observations, cytological characteristics and biometrical measurements on Miliolinella subrotunda (Montagu, 1803) sampled from the northern and southern Atlantic Ocean are presented.M. subrotunda facultatively constructs a long, detritic tube lifting the test several millimeters above the sediment surface. A thickened conical base anchors the construction on the sediment surface and a long, flexible tube protrudes into the velocity profile of the bottom currents. The miliolid test is placed on top, surrounded by the uppermost part of the tube. This construction allows the organisms to feed in the particle stream above the sediment surface. In comparison to species living in and on the surface sediments,M. subrotunda apparently shows higher nutritional values in food ingested and larger amounts of reserve substances. Characteristics of the shape and structure that reduce drag on the tubes include a broadened conical base, a flexible tube, and a rounded top. From biometrical measurements it is concluded, that the tubes are constructed over a short period of their ontogeny
Availability and quality of anti-malarials among private sector outlets in Myanmar in 2012: results from a large, community-based, cross-sectional survey before a large-scale intervention
BACKGROUND: Global malaria control efforts are threatened by the spread and emergence of artemisinin-resistant Plasmodium falciparum parasites. In 2012, the widespread sale of partial courses of artemisinin-based monotherapy was suspected to take place in the highly accessed, weakly regulated private sector in Myanmar, posing potentially major threats to drug resistance. This study investigated the presence of artemisinin-based monotherapies in the Myanmar private sector, particularly as partial courses of therapy, to inform the targeting of future interventions to stop artemisinin resistance. METHODS: A large cross-sectional survey comprised of a screening questionnaire was conducted across 26 townships in Myanmar between March and May, 2012. For outlets that stocked anti-malarials at the time of survey, a stock audit was conducted, and for outlets that stocked anti-malarials within 3 months of the survey, a provider survey was conducted. RESULTS: A total of 3,658 outlets were screened, 83% were retailers (pharmacies, itinerant drug vendors and general retailers) and 17% were healthcare providers (private facilities and health workers). Of the 3,658 outlets screened, 1,359 outlets (32%) stocked at least one anti-malarial at the time of study. Oral artemisinin-based monotherapy comprised of 33% of self-reported anti-malarials dispensing volumes found. The vast majority of artemisinin-based monotherapy was sold by retailers, where 63% confirmed that they sold partial courses of therapy by cutting blister packets. Very few retailers (5%) had malaria rapid diagnostic tests available, and quality-assured artemisinin-based combination therapy was virtually nonexistent among retailers. CONCLUSION: Informal private pharmacies, itinerant drug vendors and general retailers should be targeted for interventions to improve malaria treatment practices in Myanmar, particularly those that threaten the emergence and spread of artemisinin resistance
