On the adventurous paths that mark Julien Gracq’s fictional worlds, the heroes are often subjected to a spatial displacement. And this occurs, with few exceptions, throughout the different texts, right from their incipit. In the Prix Goncourt awarded novel Le Rivage des Syrtes for example, – a prize Julien Gracq declined – the protagonist’s crossing of the sea of Syrtes to the Island of Vezzano, conveys the same symbolism of a foregoing voyage towards a discovery. This project will allow him to experiment a vision of the forbidden. He breaks away from the everyday life’s triviality in order to finally be able to contemplate “la lumière sortie de la mer.” The island is the place of desire and discovery. The hero’s strife for arriving on the island mimics his process of finding his own identity, by means of the symbolic relation he establishes with the otherness.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Troughout this presentation the intention is to present a study on the reality of the French Studies at the Madeira University. As such, the following matters will motivate reflection on the small university system, but perhaps open to the world and the difference. What subjects are there in the area? To what kind of audience are they directed to : student/course area, which is its acceptability(degree of satisfaction? Which contents are taught? Will there be a link between the actual life of the students and their interests? Supported by a survey, directed to the Madeira University students, this study will try to present sugestions towards « francofonia » activities, amongst others, listening to their opinion about the place and the « francofonia’s » state also presenting sugestions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A dynamic analysis of repeat visitors

This paper introduces the Dynamic Probit model to analyse the underlying reasons behind repeat visits to the Azores Islands. The advantage of the model is that it allows investigating for lags in the covariates as well as for endogeneity in the covariates enabling a more accurate view of the repeat visits phenomenon in a specific tourism island destination. From the model estimation it is clear that the number of visits to the Azores Islands is a time effect that should be analyzed only with dynamic models permitting to identify persistent variables that attract the repeat tourists. The repeat tourist is supported by multiple variables such as overall satisfaction with the destination and specific satisfaction with destination attributes. However, the most important covariates are the destination attributes that are the persistent attractors of the repeat visitor. Related policy implications are derived.N/

Music teaching and the promotion of phonological awareness in 5- and 6-year-old children

UIDB/00693/2020 UIDP/00693/2020This paper discusses the relationship between music and language and presents evidence on how this connection can promote pre-reading skills. These skills are essential for students’ school success and reading acquisition. In the last decade, several researchers have investigated the relationship between music lessons and the development of language skills. It has been found that participation in music lessons in the preschool period is associated with increased phonological awareness in children with typical language development (Patscheke et al., 2016; Vidal et al., 2020). Some authors argue that music training can be used in interventions to overcome atypical language development (Pitt et al., 2017). Music perception has been pointed as a predictor of reading skills, particularly rhythm perception through beat synchronization (Bolduc, 2009) and rhythmic discrimination (Moritz et al., 2013). Furthermore, Hallam (2018) explored this topic with 11- and 12-year-old children and found that an intervention based on rhythmic activities can improve reading skills of low proficient readers. In this context, we examine Goswami's (2011) Temporal Sampling Theory, that argues that rhythmic abilities are especially correlated with the processing of speech. Finally, we analyze studies carried out with 5- and 6-year-old children in several countries (United States of America, Canada, Spain, and Germany). These studies’ methodologies are mostly experimental, with various configurations of intervention and control groups and different sample sizes. The research design is essentially longitudinal, with various time periods, always with intervention and pre-and post-testing of rhythmic and/or tonal abilities and phonological awareness. Moreover, nonverbal intelligence and socioeconomic background have been used as controlled variables in several studies. The results emerging from those investigations might contribute to establish new educational guidelines and new curricular paradigms. In this context, it would be important to establish a professional network with those who intervene with children with linguistic impairment and the music teachers. The preschool music teacher might become an important agent in signaling atypical linguistic developments, as well as a valuable partner in the elaboration of interdisciplinary programs for overcoming atypical linguistic developments. In Portugal, there is a lack of studies addressing the relationship between music lessons and the development of phonological awareness in preschool children. Thus, we hope that this review may contribute to the emergence of new research in this field of study.publishersversionpublishe

The determinants of length of stay in the Azores : a count model approach

    Get PDF
This paper employs count data models to estimate the determinants of length of stay, as count data models naturally lend themselves to overcome the censoring and truncation data issues associated with the non-negative, integer nature of length of stay. This paper employs a rich micro data set gathered through questionnaires ministered to a representative sample of tourists departing from the Azores: the fastest growing touristic region in Portugal. It is found that sociodemographic profiles, such as nationality and Azorean ascendancy, and trip attributes, such as repeat visitation rates and type of flight, are important determinants of length of stay. In addition, it is found that destination image and attitudes regarding environmental initiatives, constructed from a factor analysis exercise, also influence length of stay. In particular, the results suggest that marketing strategies that promote the Azores for its nature, landscape, remoteness, weather and safety may increase length of stay, whereas cultural heritage has the opposite effect.N/
