    The Janus face nature of debt : results from a data-driven cointegrated SVAR approach

    In this paper, we investigate the causal effects of public and private debts on US output dynamics. We estimate a battery of Cointegrated Structural Vector Autoregressive models, and we identify structural shocks by employing Independent Component Analysis, a data-driven technique which avoids ad-hoc identification choices. The econometric results suggest that the impact of debt on economic activity is Janus-faced. Public debt shocks have positive and persistent influence on economic activity. In contrast, rising private debt has a milder positive impact on gross domestic product, but it fades out over time. The analysis of the possible transmission mechanisms reveals that public debt crowds in private consumption and investment. In contrast, mortgage debt fuels consumption and output in the short-run, but shrinks them in the medium-run

    Preclinical In vivo Imaging for Fat Tissue Identification, Quantification, and Functional Characterization

    Localization, differentiation, and quantitative assessment of fat tissues have always collected the interest of researchers. Nowadays, these topics are even more relevant as obesity (the excess of fat tissue) is considered a real pathology requiring in some cases pharmacological and surgical approaches. Several weight loss medications, acting either on the metabolism or on the central nervous system, are currently under preclinical or clinical investigation. Animal models of obesity have been developed and are widely used in pharmaceutical research. The assessment of candidate drugs in animal models requires non-invasive methods for longitudinal assessment of efficacy, the main outcome being the amount of body fat. Fat tissues can be either quantified in the entire animal or localized and measured in selected organs/regions of the body. Fat tissues are characterized by peculiar contrast in several imaging modalities as for example Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) that can distinguish between fat and water protons thank to their different magnetic resonance properties. Since fat tissues have higher carbon/hydrogen content than other soft tissues and bones, they can be easily assessed by Computed Tomography (CT) as well. Interestingly, MRI also discriminates between white and brown adipose tissue (BAT); the latter has long been regarded as a potential target for anti-obesity drugs because of its ability to enhance energy consumption through increased thermogenesis. Positron Emission Tomography (PET) performed with (18)F-FDG as glucose analog radiotracer reflects well the metabolic rate in body tissues and consequently is the technique of choice for studies of BAT metabolism. This review will focus on the main, non-invasive imaging techniques (MRI, CT, and PET) that are fundamental for the assessment, quantification and functional characterization of fat deposits in small laboratory animals. The contribution of optical techniques, which are currently regarded with increasing interest, will be also briefly described. For each technique the physical principles of signal detection will be overviewed and some relevant studies will be summarized. Far from being exhaustive, this review has the purpose to highlight some strategies that can be adopted for the in vivo identification, quantification, and functional characterization of adipose tissues mainly from the point of view of biophysics and physiology

    1079-102 Correlation between norepinephrine and epinephrine myocardial spillover and tumor necrosis factor-alpha in conventional versus off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery

    Background: Complete revascularization obtained by coronary artery bypass surgery does not prevent long term left ventricular remodeling and heart failure development. Periprocedural events linked to different surgical techniques, such as cardiopulmonary bypass with cardioplegic arrest (CABG) versus off-pump procedures may trigger an irreversible microvascular dysfunction or myocytes necrosis and apoptosis. Methods: To test this hypothesis we measured norepinephrine and epinephrine coronary sinus and aortic spillover before and after surgery, simultaneously with Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) measurements in 30 patients randomized to CABG (n=15), or off-pump (n=15) coronary surgery. Plasma catecholamines were assessed by high performance liquid chromatography and TNF-alpha by ELISA. Results: Norepinephrine and epinephrine spillover was similar in the two groups before surgery, being 1.38\ub10.62 and 1.08\ub10.45, respectively. After surgery norepinephrine spillover was 1.43\ub10.56, 0.72\ub10.49 in CABG and off-pump, respectively (P<0.05 CABG versus off-pump, means \ub1SD ). Epinephrine spillover was 1.27\ub10.16 and 0.65\ub10.15 respectively (P<0.05, CABG versus off-pump). TNF-alpha significantly increased only in CABG patients being 22.17\ub16.79 and 35.4\ub15.98, pg/mL, before and after surgery (P<0.05), respectively. After surgery norepinephrine spillover correlated with TNF-alpha levels (P=0.01, R=0.553). Conclusions: Patients undergoing off-pump interventions showed significantly lower catecholamines spillover as compared to CABG, suggesting that the off-pump technique may result less invasive, not only for a lower local and whole body inflammatory response but also for a lower sympathetic drive. For the first time in humans we have detected an increase in epinephrine-spillover after cardiac surgery. Further studies are necessary to evaluate if the short-term advantages observed after off-pump coronary surgery translate into a long-term attenuation of left ventricular remodeling and in the prevention of heart failure progression

    Search for CP Violation in the Decay Z -> b (b bar) g

    About three million hadronic decays of the Z collected by ALEPH in the years 1991-1994 are used to search for anomalous CP violation beyond the Standard Model in the decay Z -> b \bar{b} g. The study is performed by analyzing angular correlations between the two quarks and the gluon in three-jet events and by measuring the differential two-jet rate. No signal of CP violation is found. For the combinations of anomalous CP violating couplings, h^b=h^AbgVbh^VbgAb{\hat{h}}_b = {\hat{h}}_{Ab}g_{Vb}-{\hat{h}}_{Vb}g_{Ab} and hb=h^Vb2+h^Ab2h^{\ast}_b = \sqrt{\hat{h}_{Vb}^{2}+\hat{h}_{Ab}^{2}}, limits of \hat{h}_b < 0.59and and h^{\ast}_{b} < 3.02$ are given at 95\% CL.Comment: 8 pages, 1 postscript figure, uses here.sty, epsfig.st

    A Roadmap for HEP Software and Computing R&D for the 2020s

    Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. In this spirit, this white paper describes the R&D activities required to prepare for this software upgrade.Peer reviewe

    Production of excited beauty states in Z decays

    A data sample of about 3.0 million hadronic Z decays collected by the ALEPH experiment at LEP in the years 1991 through 1994, is used to make an inclusive selection of B~hadron events. In this event sample 4227 \pm 140 \pm 252 B^* mesons in the decay B^* \to B \gamma and 1944 \pm 108 \pm 161 B^{**} mesons decaying into a B~meson and a charged pion are reconstructed. For the well established B^* meson the following quantities areobtained: \Delta M = M_{B^*} - M_{B} = (45.30\pm 0.35\pm 0.87)~\mathrm{MeV}/c^2 and N_{B^*}/(N_B+N_{B^*}) = (77.1 \pm 2.6 \pm 7.0)\%. The angular distribution of the photons in the B^* rest frame is used to measure the relative contribution of longitudinal B^* polarization states to be \sigma_L/(\sigma_L + \sigma_T)= (33 \pm 6 \pm 5)\%. \\ Resonance structure in the M(B\pi)-M(B) mass difference is observed at (424 \pm 4 \pm 10)~\mathrm{MeV}/c^2. Its shape and position is in agreement with the expectation for B^{**}_{u,d} states decaying into B_{u,d}^{(*)} \pi^\pm. The signal is therefore interpreted as arising from them. The relative production rate is determined to be \frac{BR(Z \to b \to B_{u,d}^{**})}{BR(Z \to b \to B_{u,d})} = [27.9 \pm 1.6(stat) \pm 5.9(syst) \phantom{a}^{+3.9}_{-5.6}(model)]\%. where the third error reflects the uncertainty due to different production and decay models for the broad B_{u,d}^{**} states
