Membraneless energy conversion and storage using immiscible electrolyte solutions

    Get PDF
peer-reviewedBreakthrough alternative technologies are urgently required to alleviate the critical need to decarbonise our energy supply. We showcase non-conventional approaches to battery and solar energy conversion and storage (ECS) system designs that harness key attributes of immiscible electrolyte solutions, especially the membraneless separation of redox active species and ability to electrify certain liquid–liquid interfaces. We critically evaluate the recent development of membraneless redox flow batteries based on biphasic systems, where one redox couple is confined to an immiscible ionic liquid or organic solvent phase, and the other couple to an aqueous phase. Common to all solar ECS devices are the abilities to harvest light, leading to photo-induced charge carrier separation, and separate the products of the photo-reaction, minimising recombination. We summarise recent progress towards achieving this accepted solar ECS design using immiscible electrolyte solutions in photo-ionic cells, to generate redox fuels, and biphasic “batch” water splitting, to generate solar fuels.ACCEPTEDpeer-reviewe

Electrochemical reduction of CO2 in water-acetonitrile mixtures on nanostructured Cu electrode

This communication studies the CO2 reduction reaction in H2O/CH3CN mixtures on nanostructured copper. It was found that the nanostructured copper electrode presents a well-defined voltammogram in acetonitrile, where it can be seen three signals related to adsorbed or surface attached (thin films) species. Also, it was found that the current density of CO2 reduction in mixtures H2O/CH3CN on nanostructured copper electrodes with a mole fraction around 0.25 is higher than those observed with mole fractions lower than 0.15 or higher than 0.35. Finally, nanostructured Cu electrodes show higher catalytic activity towards the CO2 reduction than copper electrode.APSR acknowledges the scholarship “Estudiantes sobresalientes de posgrado” at the “Universidad Nacional de Colombia (UNAL)” and COLCIENCIAS National Doctoral Scholarship (567). This paper aims at analyzing the implications that families and caretakers have in the upbringing of a person with functional diversity and how they influence the integral growth of this population. The functional diversity model is analyzed from four emergent categories based on data analysis, which allow a wider overlook at this issue, emphasizing the types of upbringings and how they promote or suppress self-determination in this group. The data was gathered through in-depth interviews, looking to comprehend meaningful realities and theoretical based interpretations. The findings in this research process highlight that the support of families and caretakers is fundamental, since they can promote or hinder autonomy.

Innovative computerized dystrophin quantification method based on spectral confocal microscopy

    Get PDF
© 2023 by the authorsSeveral clinical trials are working on drug development for Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy (DMD and BMD) treatment, and, since the expected increase in dystrophin is relatively subtle, high-sensitivity quantification methods are necessary. There is also a need to quantify dystrophin to reach a definitive diagnosis in individuals with mild BMD, and in female carriers. We developed a method for the quantification of dystrophin in DMD and BMD patients using spectral confocal microscopy. It offers the possibility to capture the whole emission spectrum for any antibody, ensuring the selection of the emission peak and allowing the detection of fluorescent emissions of very low intensities. Fluorescence was evaluated first on manually selected regions of interest (ROIs), proving the usefulness of the methodology. Later, ROI selection was automated to make it operator-independent. The proposed methodology correctly classified patients according to their diagnosis, detected even minimal traces of dystrophin, and the results obtained automatically were statistically comparable to the manual ones. Thus, spectral imaging could be implemented to measure dystrophin expression and it could pave the way for detailed analysis of how its expression relates to the clinical course. Studies could be further expanded to better understand the expression of dystrophin-associated protein complexes (DAPCs).This research was partially founded by “Somriures Valents” (private grant).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Toxicity in the Elderly from the Perspective of Oncogeriatrics and Palliative Care. Part 1

    Get PDF
Cancer is a chronic non-communicable disease, whose prevalence is increasing due to population aging. Approximately 50% of new cancer diagnoses occur in the population over 65 years of age, thus age is identified as a risk factor. Given the limited evidence regarding treatment schemes for chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy in the elderly, adverse outcomes derived from toxicity in systems such as: integumentary, cardiovascular, renal or neurological have an impact in the adherence to treatment and quality of life of patients. However, these scales have not been validated in Colombia. In this first publication of the series of two publications, the objective is to describe the different types of toxicity to non-oncologists in order to provide tools for early detection of symptoms associated with toxicity secondary to treatment with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy in older adult patients. Facetas del pensamiento de Nicolás Gómez Dávila

    Get PDF
Bogot

Financial Stability Report - Second Semester of 2021

    Get PDF
Banco de la República’s main objective is to preserve the purchasing power of the currency in coordination with the general economic policy that is intended to stabilize output and employment at long-term sustainable levels. Properly meeting the goal assigned to the Bank by the 1991 Constitution critically depends on preserving financial stability. This is understood to be a general condition in which the financial system assesses and manages the financial risks in a way that facilitates the economy’s performance and efficient allocation of resources while, at the same time, it is able to, on its own, absorb, dissipate, and mitigate the shocks that may arise as a result of adverse events. This Financial Stability Report meets the goal of giving Banco de la República’s diagnosis of the financial system’s and its debtors’ recent performance as well as of the main risks and vulnerabilities that could affect the stability of the Colombian economy. In this way, participants in financial markets and the public are being informed, and public debate on trends and risks affecting the system is being encouraged. The results presented here also serve the monetary authority as a basis for making decisions that will enhance financial stability in the general context of its objectives. In recent months, several positive aspects of the financial system have preserved a remarkable degree of continuity and stability: the liquidity and capital adequacy of financial institutions have remained well above the regulatory minimums at both the individual and consolidated levels, the coverage of past-due loans by loan-loss provisions remains high, and the financial markets for public and private debt and stocks have continued to function normally. At the same time, a surge in all the types of loan portfolios, a sharp downturn in the non-performing loan portfolio, and a rise in the profitability of credit institutions can be seen for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. In line with the general recovery of the economy, the main vulnerability to the stability of the Colombian financial system identified in the previous edition—uncertainty about changes in the non-performing loans portfolio—has receded and remains on a downward trend. In this edition, the main source of vulnerability identified for financial stability in the short term is the system’s exposure to sudden changes in international financial conditions; the results presented in this Report indicate that the system is sufficiently resilient to such scenarios. In compliance with its constitutional objectives and in coordination with the financial system’s security network, Banco de la República will continue to closely monitor the outlook for financial stability at this juncture and will make the decisions necessary to ensure the proper functioning of the economy, facilitate the flow of sufficient credit and liquidity resources, and further the smooth functioning of the payment system.
