The Postcolonial Short Story: Katherine Mansfield and Jean Rhys

Traballo Fin de Grao en Lingua e Literatura Inglesas. Curso 2018-2019As a literary genre, the short story have often received less critical recognition in comparison with other narratives , most prominently, the novel. Insights offered both by critics and practitioners of the short story have often emphasized the genre´s peripheral nature, which Frank O’Connor famously encapsulated as the expression of “submerged population groups” in his seminal work “The Lonely Voice” (1962). However, more recent critical approaches to the short story have emphasized the genre’s connection with aesthetic and formal innovation due to its brevity and freedom from conventions: such is the case of Dominic Head’s groundbreaking study “The Modernist Short Story” (1992), where he convincingly argues that modernist authors explored new approaches to fiction in their short stories, whose innovations predated techniques to be found later in their novels. Prominent examples of this are Virginia Woolf’s “Monday or Tuesday” (1921) or James Joyce “Dubliners” (1914). This dissertation departs from this premise, aiming to examine the various ways in which the twentieth-century short story is a genre “particularly suited to the representation of liminal or problematized identities”, as speaking “directly to and about those whose sense of self, religion, state or nation is insecure” (Hunter 2007). This consideration has served as a vehicle for minority groups to correlate their marginal identities with different themes that were not being taken into account in mainstream culture. Taking Hunter’s assessment of the short story as particularly suited to problematized liminal identities, along with Head’s consideration of the genre as especially apt for innovative approaches to fiction, this dissertation will explore what may be called the “postcolonial short story” by focusing on the short narratives of two postcolonial women writers: Katherine Mansfield and Jean Rhys, respectively. Both of them were born in English colonies -Mansfield in New Zealand and Rhys in Dominica- and both encapsulate in their short stories concerns pertaining to their “peripheral” nature, gender and identit

Forty-eight taxa of planktonic desmids were recorded in 319 samples taken during one year from Lakes Batata and Mussurá and Trombetas River, State of Pará, Brazil. Thirty-eight of these are described and 33 illustrated. Staurodesmus, Staurastrum and Cosmarium were represented by more species than were other genera. The importance of desmids in Amazonian waters, previously documented in literature, is confirmed by the present study

Planktonic algae, other than desmids, of three Amazonian systems (Lake Batata, Lake Mussurá and Trombetas River), Pará, Brazil

The phytoplankton composition of three clear-water Amazonian environments (Lakes Batata and Mussurá and Trombetas River) is presented. The results are based on 319 samples collected during one year. 136 of the 228 taxa recorded are described, except desmids which have been treated elsewhere. Lake Batata showed higher species richness (188) than both Lake Mussurá (139) and the Trombetas River (116), the Chlorophyceae and Zygnemaphyceae being best represented. Lower species richness was recorded in the area of Lake Batata influenced by bauxite tailings, when compared to the natural (non-impacted) area

Histopathologic Evolution of Cardiomyopathy in a Canine Model of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a recessive X-linked disorder characterized for mutation in dystrophin gene and manifested by progressive degeneration and necrosis of skeletal and cardiac muscle with replacement leading to generalized muscular weakness and atrophy. The dog Golden Retriever Muscular Dystrophy (GRMD) is the best experimental model for DMD, with genotypic and phenotypic manifestations closely of human disease. Similar to patients with DMD, heart failure is a major cause of death in GRMD animals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the pathological progression of myocardial lesions from GRMD dogs in different ages in order to clarify the pathogenesis of Duchenne´s cardiomyopathy. Fragments of left and right ventricle and interventricular septum, from 18 GRMD dogs between 6 to 51 months were collected, fixed, dehydrated, clarified, and finally embedded in paraffin. Five micrometer thick serial sections were obtained and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE), Picrosirius red, and Von Kossa. Histological analyses were performed at the light microscopy. Myocardial lesions were observed in all GRMD dogs and the sequence of cardiac lesion classified according to according to the age included: abnormal calcium accumulation, myofibrillar necrosis, proliferation of granulation tissue, endomysial and perimysial fibrosis, and finally myocardial fatty infiltration. Interestingly, several Anitschkow cells, the hallmark of rheumatic carditis, were detected in inflammatory infiltrate present at granulation tissue. Our results demonstrate the sequence of cardiac lesions that determine the cardiomyopathy in Golden Retriever dogs affected by DMD and exhibit, for the first time, the Anitschkow cells in the histological findings of this cardiomyopathy. These results are relevant for to clarify the pathogenesis of cardiomyopathy in dogs and humans affected by DMD

This study presents the state of the art on the ways of using the lime solution as a base preparation for the internal mortar coating system. The objective of this work is to evaluate the tensile bond strength of internal mortar coating systems with the base preparation using the lime solution, either in the roughcast (in the mixing water), or directly in the substrate (by moistening). For this evaluation research was carried out on articles, magazines, standards, monographs, dissertations, theses and books. The publications and works related to the theme have shown positive results regarding the use of the lime solution as a base preparation for the coating system, in addition, the tensile strength test has been fundamental for this concept to remain consistent in the scientific community.
