    Influence of Experimental Warming on the Rate and Duration of Fruit Growth and Oil Accumulation in Young Olive Trees (cvs. Arbequina, Coratina)

    Olive tree cultivation in new warmer areas and climate change have increased the global interest in understanding how air temperature affects both fruit growth and oil accumulation. The aims of this study were to evaluate the rate and duration of fruit growth and oil accumulation in response to experimental warming (+3) in a semiarid region of Argentina; and assess how warming affected fatty acid composition. Young, potted olive trees (cvs. Arbequina, Coratina) were warmed (T+) or maintained near ambient temperature (T0) inside open top chambers in the field during oil accumulation in 2014–2015 or 2015–2016 using different trees in each season. Warming reduced the rate of both fruit growth and oil accumulation in T+ compared to T0 in both cultivars. These rate reductions under T+ led to large decreases in final fruit dry weight and oil concentration. In contrast, the durations (i.e., days) of fruit growth and oil accumulation were most often not affected. Cultivar x temperature interactions were observed in 2014–2015 with warming decreasing oleic acid and increasing linoleic acid in cv. Arbequina, while cv. Coratina showed no response to warming. However, no interactions were found in 2015–2016. Studying how fruit growth and oil accumulation respond to adaptation strategies against increasing air temperatures should be a priority in both young and mature olive trees of numerous cultivars given crop expansion to new regions and future climate scenarios.Fil: Miserere, Andrea.     Sap Flow Responses to Warming and Fruit Load in Young Olive Trees

    Global warming will likely lead to temperature increases in many regions of South America where temperatures are already considered to be high for olive production. Thus, experimental studies are needed to assess how water use in olive trees may be affected by global warming. The objectives of this study were to (i) evaluate the response of olive tree sap flow, stomatal conductance, and xylem anatomy to elevated temperature and (ii) determine whether fruit load may affect the temperature responses. A warming experiment using well-irrigated olive trees (cv. Arbequina) in open-top chambers (OTCs) with two temperature levels was performed from fruit set to the end of fruit growth in two seasons. Temperature levels were a near ambient control (T0) and a treatment 4°C above the control (T+). Trees were in the chambers for either one (2015–2016) or two seasons (2014–2015, 2015–2016) and were evaluated only in the second season when all trees were 3 years old. Whole-tree sap flow on leaf area basis, stomatal conductance, and aspects of xylem anatomy were measured. Sap flow was slightly higher in T+ than T0 trees heated for one season early in fruit development (summer) likely due to the elevated temperature and increase in vapor pressure deficit. Later in fruit development (fall), sap flow was substantially higher in the T+ trees heated for one season. Total vessel number per shoot was greater in the T+ than the T0 trees at this time due to more small-diameter vessels in the T+ trees, but this did not appear to explain the greater sap flow. The T+ trees that were heated for two seasons had less fruit load than the T0 trees due to little flowering. In contrast to trees heated for one season, sap flow was less in T+ than controls late in fruit development the second season, which was likely related to lower fruit load. An independent experiment using untreated trees confirmed that sap flow decreases when fruit load is below a threshold value. The results emphasize that multiple, interacting factors should be considered when predicting warming effects on water use in olive orchards.Fil: Miserere, Andrea.     Habitats Directive in northern Italy: a series of proposals for habitat definition improvement

    Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) is the cornerstone of nature conservation in Europe and is at the core of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. There is room, however, for its improvement, at least for northern Italy, where ambiguities in the definition of habitat types of Annex I of the Habitats Directive are not novel and interpretation difficulties have been highlighted. Sharpening the characterization of habitat types represents an opportunity for lowering classification uncertainties and improving conservation success. With the aim to refine the definitions of habitat types and associated typical species of the Habitats Directive, a group of vegetation scientists of the Italian Society of Vegetation Science based in northern Italy made the exercise of finding viable proposals for those habitat types having a problematic interpretation in the Alpine biogeographical region of Italy. Such proposals arise from group discussions among scientists, and professionals, thus offering a shared view. We prepared 9 habitat proposals important for this geographic area. They include new habitat types at the European level, new subtypes within pre-existing habitat types, including some adjustments of the recently proposed subtypes with respect to northern Italy, and recognition of priority criteria for a pre-existing habitat type. With a vision of tailored conservation, our proposals represent a starting point in view of a future update of Annex I. Furthermore, the list of typical species could be useful for preparing expert systems for automatic classification. Irrespective of legally binding solutions in place, we caution these proposals represent relevant baseline conservation indications that local and regional administrations of the Alpine Arch should consider

    Respuestas ecofisiológicas al incremento de la temperatura durante la fase de acumulación de aceite en árboles jóvenes de olivo (Olea europaea)

El calentamiento global y la expansión del cultivo a nuevas regiones han despertado el interés por abordar estas temáticas. En este sentido, el objetivo de la tesis fue analizar las respuestas de la fotosíntesis y transpiración, la producción y partición de biomasa, y el rendimiento del aceite y su calidad, a incrementos de la temperatura durante la fase de acumulación de aceite en dos cultivares de olivo. Para ello se diseñó un sistema con cámaras sin techo con o sin calentamiento activo para establecer los tratamientos térmicos calentado (3-4 °C) y control, respectivamente. Los olivos, cvs Arbequina y Coratina, fueron calentados desde cuaje final a cosecha de frutos (5 meses) durante una o dos temporadas. Luego de una temporada, la fotosíntesis neta no cambió por el incremento de 3-4 °C pero la transpiración de la hoja aumentó. Aunque la producción de biomasa total por árbol fue similar entre tratamientos, los árboles calentados tuvieron menor peso seco y % de aceite por fruto que los controles. Como consecuencia, el rendimiento de aceite se redujo en los árboles calentados y hubo una mayor partición de la glucosa producida hacia órganos vegetativos que en los controles, que incluyó mayor área foliar por árbol. En contraste, luego de dos temporadas, además del efecto sobre el rendimiento, el calentamiento redujo la biomasa total producida. En relación a la calidad del aceite, el % de ácido oleico disminuyó con la temperatura, en especial en cv Arbequina, mientras que la concentración de α-tocoferoles en el aceite aumentó. Como consecuencia del calentamiento global el rendimiento del olivo y la calidad de su aceite podrían verse reducidos, mientras que los requerimientos hídricos del cultivo podrían aumentar por mayor área foliar y demanda atmosférica.Doctorado en Ciencias Agropecuarias198 p. : tbls., grafs

    Elevated temperature affects vegetative growth and fruit oil concentration in olive trees (Olea europaea)

    Temperature is one of the main factors that regulates the growth and development of crops and determines their yield. In recent decades, there has been an increase in global temperature, which represents a challenge for olive production. Olive trees in Argentina are grown over a wide range of latitude and altitude, and it has been observed in warmer areas of the country that some cultivars have lower yields and greater vegetative growth than in their regions of origin in the Mediterranean Basin. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of elevated temperature on the vegetative growth and fruit oil concentration of two olive (Olea europaea) cultivars by directly manipulating temperature. The experiment was conducted at an experimental station in the province of La Rioja in northwest Argentina. Two temperature levels (a control and a heated treatment; 3 °C above the control) were applied from fruit set until final harvest using open top chambers (OTC) with electronically controlled heating systems. The responses after one season of treatment for potted ‘Coratina’ and ‘Arbequina’ trees are shown here. Whole tree leaf area was significantly greater in the heated OTC than in the control OTC for both cultivars. Shoot elongation showed a similar tendency, but the apparent difference was not statistically significant. In contrast, elevated temperature had a negative effect on fruit dry weight and oil concentration in both cultivars. Elevated temperature reduced fruit dry weight by 0.34 and 0.22 g in ‘Coratina’ and ‘Arbequina’, respectively. Additionally, fruit oil concentration (%) was 4.6 and 6.2 % less on a dry weight basis in fruit that received elevated temperatures. The results indicate that elevated temperature promotes vegetative growth and negatively affects oil concentration in olive trees under our climate conditions.Fil: Miserere, Andrea.     Influence of environmental growth temperature on tocopherol and sterol oil concentrations in olive fruit

    BACKGROUND: Tocopherols and sterols are minor components of virgin olive oils that contribute to oil quality. Based on observations at different geographical locations, it has been suggested that environmental temperature during fruit growth affects tocopherol and sterol oil concentrations in olive fruit. However, controlled experiments have not been conducted to directly assess their responses to temperature. In this study, a manipulative experiment using open top chambers (OTCs) was performed in the field to evaluate the responses of these oil components to a moderate air temperature increase during oil accumulation in young trees of two olive cultivars (Arbequina, Coratina). The two temperature levels in the OTCs were a control about 1°C above ambient temperature (T0) and a heated treatment (T+) with a target temperature of 4 °C above T0. RESULTS: Total tocopherol and sterol oil concentrations in olive fruit were generally higher in the T+ temperature treatment than in the control at the end of the oil accumulation period. The increase in total tocopherols in T+ appeared to be related to a decrease in fruit oil concentration with heating. Individual sterols showed both significant increases and decreases due to T+ and some differences in response occurred between the two cultivars. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide evidence that growth temperature affects tocopherol and sterol oil concentrations in olive fruit at the end the oil accumulation period. Cultivars should be carefully chosen for new olive growing regions, and the results could be relevant for global warming scenarios in existing growing regions.EEA CatamarcaFil: Hamze, Leila.     Complementary active heating methods for evaluating the responses of young olive trees to warming

    Despite the commercial importance of understanding how fruit trees respond to differences in temperature between sites and due to global warming, direct experimental field studies of temperature effects on whole trees have been uncommon. To perform such studies, considerable information is needed regarding the technical aspects of heating. Thus, the objective of this study was to design and test an active heating system with two complementary heating methods that can be used for evaluating the responses of young fruit trees such as olive to warming. The two complementary methods employed to actively heat open top chambers (OTCs) were a common electrical resistance method (i.e., space heaters) and a simple transparent plastic sleeve design with blackened stones inside through which air was forced to heat the OTCs. Similar OTCs with plastic sidewalls were used as controls. The daily course of air temperature in both types of OTC tracked that of ambient air temperature. The average daily air temperature in the control OTCs was about 1 °C greater than ambient temperature due to passive heating associated with the sidewalls. The solar heated, plastic sleeve with blackened stones proved to be an effective method for daytime warming of the OTCs in the summer, but not in the autumn when solar radiation was low. In contrast, heating with the space heaters was critical on cloudy days and at night when the plastic sleeve heating was insufficient or negligible. On average, the actively heated OTCs were about 3.5 °C warmer than the control OTCs in both summer and autumn. Microclimatic variables including absolute humidity, carbon dioxide concentration, and photosynthetically active radiation were similar between the passively and actively heated OTCs. Initial observations showed that vegetative growth and yield of young olive trees were similar under ambient outdoor conditions and when passively heated by 1 °C, which suggests that chamber effects were small. The detailed evaluation conducted should provide some methodological foundation for future agricultural and physiological studies of young fruit tree responses to warming.Fil: Miserere, Andrea.     Transcriptional regulation of oil synthesis and fatty acid desaturation in olive fruit under elevated growth temperature

However, the mechanisms behind their regulation are not completely understood. In this work, the transcriptional regulation of oil synthesis and fatty acid desaturation were evaluated by manipulating air temperature in the field. Three-year-old trees of cultivars ‘Arbequina’ and ‘Coratina’ were placed in open-top chambers (OTC) where control or elevated air temperatures were applied early in the oil accumulation phase, and fruits were sampled after 10 or 36 days of exposure. Upon elevated temperature, the oil content in ‘Coratina’ mesocarp tissue decreased less than in ‘Arbequina’ compared to their respective controls. However, the oleic acid content of ‘Coratina’ was more sensitive to temperature. The cultivar-dependent responses were mainly explained by differential gene expression. In ‘Arbequina’, the downregulation of genes involved in triacylglycerol biosynthesis (OeDGAT1-2, OeDGAT2, OePDAT1-1, and OePDAT1-2), upon elevated temperature explains the decrease in oil content, whereas the downregulation of the fatty acid desaturases genes (OeSAD1, OeSAD3, OeFAD2-1, OeFAD2-2, and OeFAD2-5) decreased the oleic/linoleic ratio. In contrast, in ‘Coratina’, OePDAT1-2 downregulation explains the fluctuation in oil content, but the increased expression of three members of the OeFAD2 gene family was responsible for the oleic/linoleic ratio.     Effects of prolonged elevated temperature on leaf gas exchange and other leaf traits in young olive trees

    Despite the economic importance of long-lived crop species in the Mediterranean Basin and their expansion to new warmer regions, their potential responses to prolonged temperature increases have not been adequately addressed. The objectives of this study were to: (i) assess leaf gas exchange responses to prolonged elevated temperature in young olive trees; (ii) evaluate some additional leaf traits such as stomatal density and size under these same conditions; and (iii) determine whether photosynthetic acclimation to temperature was apparent. A field experiment with two temperature levels was conducted using well-irrigated, potted olive trees (cvs. Arbequina, Coratina) grown in open-top chambers during the summer and early fall in two growing seasons. The temperature levels were a near-ambient control (T0) and a heated (T+) treatment (+4 °C). Maximum photosynthetic rate (Amax), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration (E) and chlorophyll fluorescence were measured. Stomatal size and density and trichome density were also determined. The Amax, gs and chlorophyll fluorescence were little affected by heating. However, leaf E was higher at T+ than T0 in the summer in both seasons due in large part to the moderate increase in vapor pressure deficit that accompanied heating, and consequently water-use efficiency was reduced in heated leaves. When reciprocal temperature measurements were conducted in mid-summer of the second season, Amax values of T0 and T+ leaves were higher under the temperature level at which they grew than when measured at the other temperature level, which suggests some thermal acclimation. Stomatal size and density were greater in T+ than in T0 grown leaves in some cases, which was consistent with a greater E in T+ leaves when measured at both temperature levels. These results suggest that acclimation to long-term changes in temperature must be carefully considered to help determine how olive trees will be influenced by global warming.Fil: Miserere, Andrea.     Olive Cultivation in the Southern Hemisphere: Flowering, Water Requirements and Oil Quality Responses to New Crop Environments

    Olive (Olea europaea L.) is a crop well adapted to the environmental conditions prevailing in the Mediterranean Basin. Nevertheless, the increasing international demand for olive oil and table olives in the last two decades has led to expansion of olive cultivation in some countries of the southern hemisphere, notably in Argentina, Chile, Perú and Australia. While the percentage of world production represented by these countries is still low, many of the new production regions do not have typical Mediterranean climates, and some are located at subtropical latitudes where there is relatively little information about crop function. Thus, the primary objective of this review was to assess recently published scientific literature on olive cultivation in these new crop environments. The review focuses on three main aspects: (a) chilling requirements for flowering, (b) water requirements and irrigation management, and (c) environmental effects on fruit oil concentration and quality. In many arid and semiarid regions of South America, temperatures are high and rainfall is low in the winter and early spring months compared to conditions in much of the Mediterranean Basin. High temperatures have often been found to have detrimental effects on olive flowering in many olive cultivars that have been introduced to South America, and a better understanding of chilling requirements is needed. Lack of rainfall in the winter and spring also has resulted in an urgent need to evaluate water requirements from the flower differentiation period in the winter to early fruit bearing. Additionally, in some olive growing areas of South America and Australia, high early season temperatures affect the timing of phenological events such that the onset of oil synthesis occurs sooner than in the Mediterranean Basin with most oil accumulation taking place in the summer when temperatures are very high. Increasing mean daily temperatures have been demonstrated to decrease fruit oil concentration (%) and negatively affect some aspects of oil quality based on both correlative field studies and manipulative experiments. From a practical standpoint, current findings could be used as approximate tools to determine whether the temperature conditions in a proposed new growing region are appropriate for achieving sustainable oil productivity and quality
