    Reliability and energy costs analysis of a rural hybrid microgrid using measured data and battery dynamics: a case study in the coast of Perú

    Hybrid microgrids constitute a promising solution for filling the electricity access gap that currently exists in rural areas; however, there is still relatively little information about their reliability and costs based on measured data in real working conditions. This article analyzes data obtained from the operation of a 9 kW hybrid microgrid in the fishermen’s cove of Laguna Grande, Paracas, in the Ica region of Perú, which has been running for 5 years. This microgrid has been equipped with data acquisition systems that measure and register wind speed, solar radiation, temperatures, and all the relevant electric parameters. Battery dynamics considerations are used to determine the depth of discharge in a real-time operative situation. The collected data are used to optimize the design using the specialized software HOMER, incorporating state-of-the-art technology and costs as a possible system upgrade. This work aims to contribute to better understanding the behavior of hybrid rural microgrids using data collected under field conditions, analyzing their reliability, costs, and corresponding sensitivity to battery size as well as solar and wind installed power, as a complement to a majority of studies based on simulations.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Competitive internal transfers in metastable decay of cluster ions

    In a previous study of fragmentation patterns of (Ar)3 + clusters [G. Delgado-Barrio, S. Miret-Artés, P. Villarreal, and F. A. Gianturco, Z. Phys. D 27, 354 (1993)] it was found that overall rotations control the lifetimes of the occupied metastable states of the cluster and that a spherical, effective interaction was sufficient to describe the dynamical process. In the present study, the strong anisotropy of a more realistic three-particle interaction is introduced and its effects on metastable decay are examined. By separating internal rotations from internal vibrations of the diatomic ion, it is possible to show that internal predissociation pathways are very efficient and lead to very short lifetimes.     Positive and negative motor signs of head motion in cerebral palsy: assessment of impairment and task performance

    This paper analyzes the presence of positive and negative motor signs in people with cerebral palsy (CP). Positive motor signs are those that lead to involuntarily increased frequency or magnitude of muscle activity. Negative motor signs describe insufficient muscle activity or insufficient control of muscle activity. In this paper, a head-mounted alternative computer interface based on inertial technology was used to assess motor signs in seven users with CP. Task performance and control of posture was related to the impairment. There are no significant differences between users with CP and healthy control participants in the frequency domain of the head movement. Results suggest that this kind of motor disorders is not related to positive motor signs. Moreover, a control mode based on posture more than on movements is not optimum; an alternative control mode must be specially designed for users with poor postural control

    Suicidality in primary care patients who present with sadness and anhedonia: a prospective European study

    Background: Sadness and anhedonia (loss of interest in activities) are central symptoms of major depression. However, not all people with these symptoms meet diagnostic criteria for major depression. We aimed to assess the importance of suicidality in the outcomes for primary care patients who present with sadness and anhedonia. Method: Cohort study of 2,599 unselected primary care attenders in six European countries followed up at 6 and 12 months. Results: 1) In patients with sadness and/or anhedonia who were not depressed at entry to the study, suicide plans (OR = 3.05; 95 % CI = 1.50–6.24; p = 0.0022) and suicide attempts (OR = 9.08; 95 % CI = 2.57–32.03; p = 0.0006) were significant predictors of developing new onset depression at 6 or 12 months. 2) In patients with sadness and/or anhedonia who met CIDI criteria for major depression at entry, suicidal ideation (OR = 2.93; 95 % CI = 1.70–5.07; p = 0.0001), suicide plans (OR = 3.70; 95 % CI = 2.08–6.57; p < 0.0001), and suicide attempts (OR = 3.33; 95 % CI = 1.47–7.54; p = 0.0040) were significant predictors of persistent depression at 6 or 12 months. Conclusions: Three questions on suicidality could help primary care professionals to assess such patients more closely without necessarily establishing whether they meet criteria for major depression.This research was funded by a grant from The European Commission, referencePREDICT-QL4-CT2002-00683.     Helicobacter pylori Perturbs Iron Trafficking in the Epithelium to Grow on the Cell Surface

    Helicobacter pylori (Hp) injects the CagA effector protein into host epithelial cells and induces growth factor-like signaling, perturbs cell-cell junctions, and alters host cell polarity. This enables Hp to grow as microcolonies adhered to the host cell surface even in conditions that do not support growth of free-swimming bacteria. We hypothesized that CagA alters host cell physiology to allow Hp to obtain specific nutrients from or across the epithelial barrier. Using a polarized epithelium model system, we find that isogenic ΔcagA mutants are defective in cell surface microcolony formation, but exogenous addition of iron to the apical medium partially rescues this defect, suggesting that one of CagA's effects on host cells is to facilitate iron acquisition from the host. Hp adhered to the apical epithelial surface increase basolateral uptake of transferrin and induce its transcytosis in a CagA-dependent manner. Both CagA and VacA contribute to the perturbation of transferrin recycling, since VacA is involved in apical mislocalization of the transferrin receptor to sites of bacterial attachment. To determine if the transferrin recycling pathway is involved in Hp colonization of the cell surface, we silenced transferrin receptor expression during infection. This resulted in a reduced ability of Hp to colonize the polarized epithelium. To test whether CagA is important in promoting iron acquisition in vivo, we compared colonization of Hp in iron-replete vs. iron-deficient Mongolian gerbils. While wild type Hp and ΔcagA mutants colonized iron-replete gerbils at similar levels, ΔcagA mutants are markedly impaired in colonizing iron-deficient gerbils. Our study indicates that CagA and VacA act in concert to usurp the polarized process of host cell iron uptake, allowing Hp to use the cell surface as a replicative niche

El treball formatiu s’orienta a oferir resultats que responguin tant a paràmetres de rigor acadèmic i capacitat d’anàlisi del context com a l’experimentació i la creació de nous llenguatges, tot fomentant el potencial innovador del disseny.Con esta publicación, EINA, Centro universitario de diseño y arte adscrito a la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, da a conocer la recopilación de los Trabajos de Fin de Grado presentados durante el curso 2013-2014. Querríamos que una recopilación como ésta diera una idea más precisa del trabajo que se realiza en EINA para formar nuevos diseñadores con capacidad de responder profesional e intelectualmente a las necesidades y exigencias de nuestra sociedad.     Bound-state energies in argon trimers via a variational expansion: The effects from many-body corrections

    In this paper we study the bound-state energies and geometries of Ar3 for J=0, using the distributed Gaussian functions method that provides a configurational description of the different structures contributing to these states. Atom-atom potentials are employed and three-body long-range effects are also included in the computational treatment by adding to the sum of potentials the Axilrod-Teller triple-dipole correction for the whole rotationless energy spectrum. An estimate of the total number of bound states for the Ar trimer is given. With respect to previous calculations, limited to the lower-lying states, our results show slightly larger nonadditive effects and are further able to predict the full range of the bound spectrum.     A complete configurational study for the bound states of Ne trimers

    The structural properties and the energetics of the ground and the excited bound states of Ne3 for zero total angular momentum are examined using different modelings for the two-body interactions. We employ a method consisting of a variational approach with a distributed Gaussian functions (DGF) basis set expansion. We discuss at length the advantages and possible limitations of such an approach, comparing it to other methods which have been applied in the literature to the same system. The DGF method turns out to be very accurate in giving us the bound states energetics and also provides in a natural way a convincing pictorial description of all the states, including those with dominant linear configurations. Additional bound states are found for the Ne3 system with respect to those indicated in previous works and we suggest a >stabilization> procedure that can be used to assess the truly bound nature of a state.     Metastable decay of rare gas cluster ions - the (Ar3)+ system

    The decay of (Ar3 +* → Ar2 + + Ar is studied from a dynamical viewpoint by employing an effective, spherical interaction and constructing the complete set of bound and metastable wavefunctions for the full range of rotational states of the triatomic complex. In agreement with the experimental findings, the present calculations show that the effect of populating the high rotational states of the overall cluster gives rise to a wealth of new resonances (predissociative tunnelling) and can cover a very broad range of metastable dissociation rates, with lifetimes ranging from 10-11 s to 10 s. Such a dynamical mechanism could therefore provide a simple explanation for the observed behaviour of rare gas cluster ions and could indicate further ways of improving the modelling of such processes. © 1993 Springer-Verlag.The financial support of a collaborative project between Italy and Spain is here acknowledged.Peer Reviewe
