Effects of Training and a Semester Break on Physical Fitness of Police Trainees

    Get PDF
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of a physical training program and semester break periods on the chosen physical abilities and basic body composition indicators among police trainees. Body weight (BW), waist circumference (WC), push-ups (PU), sit-ups (SU) and 2.4 km run (RUN) times of 420 male trainees attending the Abu Dhabi Police College were collected. The testing was conducted by the police education centre during routine testing periods (June, September, December, May) which bracketed the semesters and could be used to investigate the impacts of the physical training program and any potential detraining occurring over the semester break. A repeated measure analysis of variance was performed to identify changes in results across the time periods with a Bonferroni post-hoc adjustment to identify where differences, if any, lay. The level of significance was set at 0.05 a priori. Following the semester break period from June to September, BW, WC and RUN increased significantly (p<.01), while PU and SU decreased significantly (p<.01). WC and RUN significantly decreased from September to December and December to May (p<.01); BW significantly decreased from September to December (p<.01), but did not change from December to May (p=.267); PU and SU significantly increased from September to December (p<.01) and December to May (p=.018 and p<.01, respectively)

Acute coronary syndrome in diclofenac sodium-induced type I hypersensitivity reaction : Kounis syndrome

    Get PDF
Drug-induced type I hypersensitivity reactions are frequent. Sometimes, acute coronary syndrome (ACS) can be registered in such patients, which may have a serious impact on the course and management of the allergic reaction. Because of potentially atypical ACS clinical presentations, the ECG is an obligatory diagnostic tool in any allergic reaction. Coronary artery spasm is the pathophysiological basis of ACS, triggered by the action of potent vasoactive mediators (histamine, neutral proteases, arachidonic acid products) released from the cells involved in type I hypersensitivity. Allergic angina and allergic myocardial infarction are referred to as Kounis Syndrome. We describe herein a case of ACS in a patient with registered systemic immediate hypersensitivity reaction which developed following the muscular administration of diclofenac sodium.peer-reviewe

A brief review of body composition in police workforce

    Get PDF
It is evident that success in performing certain police duties undoubtedly depends on the level of certain physical abilities, while good health status is necessary for each employee in police workforce. Tasks performed by police officers can involve chasing fleeing suspects on foot, grappling, wrestling and handling uncooperative belligerents, and carrying injured or unconscious people. Next to the “foot soldiers”, logistics and administration jobs are less physically but mentally very demanding and stressful. In both cases, body composition has twofold importance in physical fitness: performance-related and health-related. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to gather the studies that dealt with body composition in police workforce using various approaches with the aim to make a clearer insight into what has been done so far, and what might be done in the future

SPATIAL SPICE MODEL OF A WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORK NODE BASED ON A THERMOELECTRIC GENERATOR

    Get PDF
This paper presents a spatial SPICE model of a wireless sensor network node that enables simulation of performances in the steady-state and time-domain. The model includes constructive non-electrical parts of the node and a thermoelectric generator employing the thermoelectric effects. The simulation results are compared with the experiment to validate the proposed model. It enabled the characterization of WSN nodes comprising different thermoelectric generators and heatsinks in terms of energy conversion efficiency

A STUDY OF THE USE OF MIXED REALITY FOR CAPTURING HUMAN OBSERVATION AND INFERENCES IN PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENTS

    Get PDF
Augmented and mixed reality is already considered as needful technology of the modern production systems. It is primarily employed to virtualize proper digital content, mainly related to 3D objects, into the human visual field allowing people to visualize and understand complex spatial shapes, their mutual relations, and positioning. Yet, the huge potential of the technology is waiting to be revealed in its usage for collecting and recording human observations and inferences about the context of the production environment. Its bi-directional interface makes it the most direct and the most efficient knowledge capturing means to date. The paper presents the challenges and benefits that come from the usage of a conceptual interface of an mixed reality application that is designed to collect data, semantics and knowledge about the production context directly from the man-in-process. As a production environment for the development, implementation, and testing of mixed reality applications for this purpose, various processes for the assembly and maintenance of medium-voltage equipment were used

The antitumor activity of thymoquinone and thymohydroquinone in vitro and in vivo

Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate antitumor activity of thymoquinone (TQ) and thymohydroquinone (THQ) in vitro and in vivo. Materials and Methods: In the in vitro experiments, L929 mouse ?broblasts and two tumor cell lines (squamous cell carcinoma (SCC VII) and fibrosarcoma (FsaR)) were used. The cells were cultured with 0.1 or 0.01 mg/ml TQ or THQ for 24 h, and cytotoxicity assay was performed with the use of crystal violet staining technique. For in vivo antitumor efficiency evaluation of new compounds two murine tumor models (fibrosarcoma (FsaR) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC VII)) were used. The used dose was equal for both substances. Antitumor effect of 4 intratumoral injections of TQ and THQ at the dose of 5 mg/kg was evaluated by comparison of tumor growth kinetics between treated and control animals. Results: In vitro study showed that TQ and THQ exhibit statistically significant cytotoxic activity (p < 0.01). The cytotoxic activity was dose dependent and more expressed against tumor cells than against L929 fibroblasts. The result of antitumor activities of TQ and THQ in vivo reached TGI = 52% and it was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The results indicate that THQ antitumor activity may be improved with further dose increase of the investigated substance.Цель: исследовать противоопухолевую активность тимохинона (TХ) и тимогидрохинона (TГХ) in vitro и in vivo.

Rapid tooling of tyre tread ring mould using direct metal laser sintering

    No full text
1038-1042Paper outlines a feasibility study of using direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) for rapid tooling (RT) of tread ring of tyre vulcanization mould. Lead time and costs for rapid tooling with DMLS is acceptable for small mould segments (1/64 of tread ring). RT strategy that utilizes DMLS appeared to have significant advantages concerning lead time and costs as compared to conventional tooling of tyre mould including CNC-HSM engraving. Simplicity of tread ring tooling by DMLS makes new tyre development and test easier and faster
