    We experimentally demonstrate spatial beam self-cleaning and supercontinuum generation in a tapered Ytterbium-doped multimode optical fiber with parabolic core refractive index profile when 1064 nm pulsed beams propagate from wider (122 µm) into smaller (37 µm) diameter. In the passive mode, increasing the input beam peak power above 20 kW leads to a bell-shaped output beam profile. In the active configuration, gain from the pump laser diode permits to combine beam self-cleaning with supercontinuum generation between 520-2600 nm. By taper cut-back, we observed that the dissipative landscape, i.e., a non-monotonic variation of the average beam power along the MMF, leads to modal transitions of self-cleaned beams along the taper length

    Efficacy and toxicity of intravenous iron in a mouse model of critical care anemia

    OBJECTIVE: Anemia is common in critically ill patients, due to inflammation and blood loss. Anemia can be associated with iron deficiency and low serum hepcidin levels. However, iron administration in this setting remains controversial because of its potential toxicity, including oxidative stress induction and sepsis facilitation. The objective of this work was to determine the efficacy and toxicity of iron administration using a mouse model mimicking critical care anemia as well as a model of acute septicemia. DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, open label controlled animal study. SETTING: University-based research laboratory. SUBJECTS: C57BL/6 and OF1 mice. INTERVENTIONS: Intraperitoneal injection of zymosan inducing generalized inflammation in C57BL/6 mice, followed in our full model by repeated phlebotomies. A dose equivalent to 15 mg/kg of ferric carboxymaltose was injected intravenously on day 5. To assess the toxicity of iron in a septicemia model, OF1 mice were simultaneously injected with iron and different Escherichia coli strains. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: To investigate the effect of iron on oxidative stress, we measured reactive oxygen species production in the blood using luminol-amplified chemiluminescence and superoxide dismutase 2 messenger RNA levels in the liver. These markers of oxidative stress were increased after iron administration in control mice but not in zymosan-treated mice. Liver catalase messenger RNA levels decreased in iron-treated control mice. Iron administration was not associated with increased mortality in the septicemia model or in the generalized inflammation model. Iron increased hemoglobin levels in mice fed with a low iron diet and subjected to phlebotomies and zymosan 2 wks after treatment administration. CONCLUSIONS: Adverse effects of intravenous iron supplementation by ferric carboxymaltose seem to be minimal in our animal models. Furthermore, iron appears to be effective in correcting anemia, despite inflammation. Studies of efficacy and safety of iron in critically ill patients are warranted

    When worlds collide: Invader-driven benthic habitat complexity alters predatory impacts of invasive and native predatory fishes

    Interactions between multiple invasive alien species (IAS) might increase their ecological impacts, yet relatively few studies have attempted to quantify the effects of facilitative interactions on the success and impact of aquatic IAS. Further, the effect of abiotic factors, such as habitat structure, have lacked consideration in ecological impact prediction for many high-profile IAS, with most data acquired through simplified assessments that do not account for real environmental complexities. In the present study, we assessed a potential facilitative interaction between a predatory invasive fish, the Ponto-Caspian round goby (Neogobius melanostomus), and an invasive bivalve, the Asian clam (Corbicula fluminea). We compared N. melanostomus functional responses (feeding-rates under different prey densities) to a co-occurring endangered European native analogue fish, the bullhead (Cottus gobio), in the presence of increased levels of habitat complexity driven by the accumulation of dead C. fluminea biomass that persists within the environment (i.e. 0, 10, 20 empty bivalve shells). Habitat complexity significantly influenced predation, with consumption in the absence of shells being greater than where 10 or 20 shells were present. However, at the highest shell density, invasive N. melanostomus maximum feeding-rates and functional response ratios were substantially higher than those of native C. gobio. Further, the Relative Impact Potential metric, by combining per capita effects and population abundances, indicated that higher shell densities exacerbate the relative impact of the invader. It therefore appears that N. melanostomus can better tolerate higher IAS shell abundances when foraging at high prey densities, suggesting the occurrence of an important facilitative interaction. Our data are thus fully congruent with field data that link establishment success of N. melanostomus with the presence of C. fluminea. Overall, we show that invader-driven benthic habitat complexity can alter the feeding-rates and thus impacts of predatory fishes, and highlight the importance of inclusion of abiotic factors in impact prediction assessments for IAS

    Heat and charge transport in H2O at ice-giant conditions from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations

    The impact of the inner structure and thermal history of planets on their observable features, such as luminosity or magnetic field, crucially depends on the poorly known heat and charge transport properties of their internal layers. The thermal and electric conductivities of different phases of water (liquid, solid, and super-ionic) occurring in the interior of ice giant planets, such as Uranus or Neptune, are evaluated from equilibrium ab initio molecular dynamics, leveraging recent progresses in the theory and data analysis of transport in extended systems. The implications of our findings on the evolution models of the ice giants are briefly discussed

    Background Light in Potential Sites for the ANTARES Undersea Neutrino Telescope

    The ANTARES collaboration has performed a series of {\em in situ} measurements to study the background light for a planned undersea neutrino telescope. Such background can be caused by 40^{40}K decays or by biological activity. We report on measurements at two sites in the Mediterranean Sea at depths of 2400~m and 2700~m, respectively. Three photomultiplier tubes were used to measure single counting rates and coincidence rates for pairs of tubes at various distances. The background rate is seen to consist of three components: a constant rate due to 40^{40}K decays, a continuum rate that varies on a time scale of several hours simultaneously over distances up to at least 40~m, and random bursts a few seconds long that are only correlated in time over distances of the order of a meter. A trigger requiring coincidences between nearby photomultiplier tubes should reduce the trigger rate for a neutrino telescope to a manageable level with only a small loss in efficiency.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physic
