    GEANT4 simulation of the moderating neutrons spectrum

    The probability and intensity of nuclear reactions involving neutrons are characterized by the corresponding reaction cross-sections which are known to depend strongly on the incident neutron energy. In real applications the neutrons are seldom or never monoenergetic, and are usually characterized by certain continuous energy spectrum. The detailed knowledge of the neutron spectrum is crucial for numerous applications such as the nuclear reactor operation, the traveling wave reactor (TWR) development, including the search of the neutron energy ranges suitable for the wave nuclear burning, the search and prediction of the so-called "blowup modes" in neutron-multiplying media, the verification of neutron moderation theories and so on. In this paper we describe a method of GEANT4-based Monte Carlo calculation of the neutron spectrum evolution as well as the steady-state neutron spectrum in a system containing a persistent neutron source.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figure

    The Effect of Oral Leucine on Protein Metabolism in Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

    Lack of insulin results in a catabolic state in subjects with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus which is reversed by insulin treatment. Amino acid supply, especially branched chain amino acids such as leucine, enhances protein synthesis in both animal and human studies. This small study was undertaken to assess the acute effect of supplemental leucine on protein metabolism in adolescents with type 1 diabetes. L-[1-13C] Leucine was used to assess whole-body protein metabolism in six adolescent females (16–18 yrs) with type 1 diabetes during consumption of a basal diet (containing 58 μmoles leucine/kg/h) and the basal diet with supplemental leucine (232 μmoles leucine/kg/h). Net leucine balance was significantly higher with supplemental leucine (56.33 ± 12.13 μmoles leucine/kg body weight/hr) than with the basal diet (−11.7 ± −5.91, P < .001) due to reduced protein degradation (49.54 ± 18.80 μmoles leucine/kg body weight/hr) compared to the basal diet (109 ± 13.05, P < .001)

    Gastrocnemius medialis contractile behavior during running differs between simulated Lunar and Martian gravities

    The international partnership of space agencies has agreed to proceed forward to the Moon sustainably. Activities on the Lunar surface (0.16 g) will allow crewmembers to advance the exploration skills needed when expanding human presence to Mars (0.38 g). Whilst data from actual hypogravity activities are limited to the Apollo missions, simulation studies have indicated that ground reaction forces, mechanical work, muscle activation, and joint angles decrease with declining gravity level. However, these alterations in locomotion biomechanics do not necessarily scale to the gravity level, the reduction in gastrocnemius medialis activation even appears to level off around 0.2 g, while muscle activation pattern remains similar. Thus, it is difficult to predict whether gastrocnemius medialis contractile behavior during running on Moon will basically be the same as on Mars. Therefore, this study investigated lower limb joint kinematics and gastrocnemius medialis behavior during running at 1 g, simulated Martian gravity, and simulated Lunar gravity on the vertical treadmill facility. The results indicate that hypogravity-induced alterations in joint kinematics and contractile behavior still persist between simulated running on the Moon and Mars. This contrasts with the concept of a ceiling effect and should be carefully considered when evaluating exercise prescriptions and the transferability of locomotion practiced in Lunar gravity to Martian gravity

    Experimental Investigation of the Impact of Compression on the Petro-Physical and Micromechanical Properties of Wellbore Cement Containing Salt

    Abstract In this study, we investigated the effect of compression on the micromechanical and the petrophysical properties of salted wellbore cement systems. The experiments were conducted using a customized bench scale model, which utilized an expandable tubulars simulating the compression of a previously cemented casing under field-like conditions. The &quot;mini-wellbore model&quot; sample consisted of a pipe inside pipe assembly with a cemented annulus. The cement samples were cured in a water bath for 28 days prior to the compression experiments to allow adequate hydration. The impact of compression on the cement&apos;s petro-physical and mechanical properties was quantified by measuring the porosity, permeability and hardness of salt cement cores drilled parallel to the orientation of the pipe from the compacted cement sheath. Permeability (Core-flood) experiments were conducted at 21˚C, 10,342 kPa confining pressure for a period of 120 minutes. During the core-flood experiments, conducted using Pulse-decay method, deionized water was flowed through cement cores to determine the permeability of the cores. The results obtained from these experiments confirmed that the compression of the cement positively impacted the cements ability to provide long term zonal isolation, shown by the effective reduction in porosity and permeability. Furthermore, the results confirm reduction in the detrimental effect of salt on the strength and stiffness in post-compression cement

    Contractile behavior of the gastrocnemius medialis muscle during running in simulated hypogravity

    Vigorous exercise countermeasures in microgravity can largely attenuate muscular degeneration, albeit the extent of applied loading is key for the extent of muscle wasting. Running on the International Space Station is usually performed with maximum loads of 70% body weight (0.7 g). However, it has not been investigated how the reduced musculoskeletal loading affects muscle and series elastic element dynamics, and thereby force and power generation. Therefore, this study examined the effects of running on the vertical treadmill facility, a ground-based analog, at simulated 0.7 g on gastrocnemius medialis contractile behavior. The results reveal that fascicle−series elastic element behavior differs between simulated hypogravity and 1 g running. Whilst shorter peak series elastic element lengths at simulated 0.7 g appear to be the result of lower muscular and gravitational forces acting on it, increased fascicle lengths and decreased velocities could not be anticipated, but may inform the development of optimized running training in hypogravity. However, whether the alterations in contractile behavior precipitate musculoskeletal degeneration warrants further study

    Quantitative microstructure characterization of Ag nanoparticle sintered joints for power die attachment

    The samples of sintered Ag joints for power die attachments were prepared using paste of Ag nanoparticles at 240 °C and 5 MPa for 3 to 17 minutes. Their microstructural features were quantitatively characterized with scanning elec-tronic microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and image analysis method. The resulting nor-malized thickness, pore size and porosity decreased, and grain size increased with increasing the sintering time. A time dependence of the form t1/n with n close to 2 or 3 can be further derived for the kinetics of the thinning, densification and grain growth within the sintered Ag joints

    Perception of threat and intent to harm from vocal and facial cues

    What constitutes a “threatening tone of voice”? There is currently little research exploring how listeners infer threat, or the intention to cause harm, from speakers’ voices. Here, we investigated the influence of key linguistic variables on these evaluations (Study 1). Results showed a trend for voices perceived to be lower in pitch, particularly those of male speakers, to be evaluated as sounding more threatening and conveying greater intent to harm. We next investigated the evaluation of multimodal stimuli comprising voices and faces varying in perceived dominance (Study 2). Visual information about the speaker’s face had a significant effect on threat and intent ratings. In both experiments, we observed a relatively low level of agreement among individual listeners’ evaluations, emphasising idiosyncrasy in the ways in which threat and intent-to-harm are perceived. This research provides a basis for the perceptual experience of a “threatening tone of voice,” along with an exploration of vocal and facial cue integration in social evaluation

    Muscle metabolic and neuromuscular determinants of fatigue during cycling in different exercise intensity domains.

The final version is available from American Physiological Society via the DOI in this record.The lactate or gas exchange threshold (GET) and the critical power (CP) are closely associated with human exercise performance. We tested the hypothesis that the limit of tolerance (Tlim) during cycle exercise performed within the exercise intensity domains demarcated by GET and CP is linked to discrete muscle metabolic and neuromuscular responses. Eleven males performed a ramp incremental exercise test, 4-5 severe-intensity (SEV; >CP) constant-work-rate (CWR) tests until Tlim, a heavy-intensity (HVY; GET) CWR test until Tlim, and a moderate-intensity (MOD; 0.05) muscle metabolic milieu (i.e., low pH and [PCr] and high [lactate]) was attained at Tlim (~2-14 min) for all SEV exercise bouts. The muscle metabolic perturbation was greater at Tlim following SEV compared to HVY, and also following SEV and HVY compared to MOD (all P0.05). Neural drive to the VL increased during SEV (4±4%; P0.05). During SEV and HVY, but not MOD, the rates of change in M-wave amplitude and neural drive were correlated with changes in muscle metabolic ([PCr], [lactate]) and blood ionic/acid-base status ([lactate], [K(+)]) (P<0.05). The results of this study indicate that the metabolic and neuromuscular determinants of fatigue development differ according to the intensity domain in which the exercise is performed
