A Generalized Method for Proving Polynomial Calculus Degree Lower Bounds

Get PDF
We study the problem of establishing lower bounds for polynomial calculus (PC) and polynomial calculus resolution (PCR) on proof degree, and hence by [Impagliazzo et al. ➙] also on proof size. [Alekhnovich and Razborov ✃] established that if the clause-variable incidence graph of a CNF formula F is a good enough expander, then proving that F is unsatisfiable requires high PC/PCR degree. We further develop the techniques in [AR03] to show that if one can "cluster" clauses and variables in a way that "respects the structure" of the formula in a certain sense, then it is sufficient that the incidence graph of this clustered version is an expander. As a corollary of this, we prove that the functional pigeonhole principle (FPHP) formulas require high PC/PCR degree when restricted to constant-degree expander graphs. This answers an open question in [Razborov ✂], and also implies that the standard CNF encoding of the FPHP formulas require exponential proof size in polynomial calculus resolution

Identifying and Addressing Issues Faced by New Community College Presidents

Get PDF
The American community college system is in the midst of a leadership crisis. Community college presidents are retiring at an alarming rate. Further exacerbating the leadership crisis is the lack of qualified candidates to replace the retiring presidents. Senior administrators at community colleges who are the natural choice to replace the retirees are also retiring or choosing not to pursue a presidency. The overarching purpose driving this research was to identify the challenges encountered by new community college presidents, seek to comprehend the information gathering method utilized by new presidents to identify challenges, and finally, to present the strategies the participants employed to address the identified challenges. The information garnered from the identifying, strategizing, and addressing of challenges will provide meaningful insight for future new community college presidents, thus easing the difficult transition period the large number of new community college presidents will be facing in the near future. The findings from the study demonstrated that new community college presidents seek information in both formal and informal manners. They prioritize challenges utilizing data driven decision making and intuition based decision making. Finally, the strategies they chose to employ when addressing challenges were extremely diverse in nature. However, a common theme among the diverse strategies is all presidents studied gravitate towards a collaborative problem solving approach. Further, each president exhibited a high level of self awareness relative to their leadership style

From Aesthetic Virtues to God:: Augmenting Theistic Personal Cause Arguments

Get PDF
I argue that the aesthetic theoretical virtues of beauty, simplicity, and unification, as well as the evidential virtue of explanatory depth, can transform theistic-friendly personal cause (PC) arguments—like the kalām cosmological argument (KCA) and the fine-tuning argument—into stand-alone arguments for monotheism. The aesthetic virtues allow this by providing us with the grounds to rationally accept a perfect personal cause (i.e., God) as the best PC to believe in given the success of some PC argument. Using the KCA as an example, I argue that, once the KCA is accepted and a PC believed in, then a theory that posits a perfect PC as the cause of the universe is more beautiful, simpler, and has more unification and explanatory depth than the imperfect PC normally posited by the KCA’s standard conceptual analysis. And the same would hold true for any imperfect PC. Thus, once a PC argument has been accepted, the perfect PC theory is preferable to hold over any other PC theory. Finally, I address various objections to this reasoning.

This document will provide information on the 2018 Spring semester NIFS Intern who represented the Office of Chief Financial Officer (OCFO) as a Reimbursable Accountant at Kennedy Space Center (KSC). This intern supported the Agency Agreements Process Champions and Team Lead, Susan Kroskey, Sandy Massey and Mecca Murphy, with major initiatives to advance the KSC OCFO's vision of creating and innovating healthy financial management practices that maximize the value of resources entrusted to NASA. These initiatives include, but are not limited to: updating the Agency Guidance and NASA Procedural Guidance 9090.1 Agreements, implementing a new budget structure to be utilized across all centers, submitting a Call Request (CRQ) to enhance non-federal customer reporting, initiating a discussion to incorporate a 3-year funding program for NASA agreements, and undertaking the Office of Inspector General (OIG) Audit. In support of these initiatives, this intern identified technical methods to enhance and reduce the workload of financial processes for reimbursable and non-reimbursable agreements, prepared reports in support of accounting functions, and performed administrative work and miscellaneous technical tasks in support of the OCFO as requested. In conclusion of the internship, the intern will become knowledgeable on reimbursable accounting, reimbursable policy, types of reimbursable agreements, the agreements process, estimated pricing reports, and the roles and responsibilities of the Financial Accounting and Financial Services offices

Principal component analysis implementation for brainwave signal reduction based on cognitive activity

Get PDF
Human has the ability to think that comes from the brain. Electrical signals generated by brain and represented in wave form. To record and measure the activity of brainwaves in the form of electrical potential required electroencephalogram (EEG). In this study a cognitive task is applied to trigger a specific human brain response arising from the cognitive aspect. Stimulation is given by using nine types of cognitive tasks including breath, color, face, finger, math, object, password thinking, singing, and sports. Principal component analysis (PCA) is implemented as a first step to reduce data and to get the main component of feature extraction results obtained from EEG acquisition. The results show that PCA succeeded reducing 108 existing datasets to 2 prominent factors with a cumulative rate of 65.7%. Factor 1 (F1) includes mean, standard deviation, and entropy, while factor 2 (F2) includes skewness and kurtosis

Drone Component for Radio Frequency Detection

Get PDF
Recovering people who have lost their way during a hike or disappeared during a disaster is a significant task for disaster management agencies. Nowadays, there are numerous technological devices at our disposal in such cases. Night-vision devices, thermal imagers, and drones are among such technologies. Time is a critical factor in a disaster situation, so by deploying drones, a greater area can be inspected in a given time. These types of general-purpose aircraft are primarily equipped with visual reconnaissance components, such as high-resolution or infrared cameras. The disadvantage of these devices is that they only work effectively in open terrains with adequate visibility conditions. If the missing person is in a dense forest or in a covered space, the chances of recovery decrease significantly. Our development is a radio-frequency detector drone component, which can find the mobile device of the person in trouble, and therefore eliminates the prerequisite for adequate visual conditions. This enables greater efficiency in the case of recovery efforts
