    The entropic origin of disassortativity in complex networks

    Why are most empirical networks, with the prominent exception of social ones, generically degree-degree anticorrelated, i.e. disassortative? With a view to answering this long-standing question, we define a general class of degree-degree correlated networks and obtain the associated Shannon entropy as a function of parameters. It turns out that the maximum entropy does not typically correspond to uncorrelated networks, but to either assortative (correlated) or disassortative (anticorrelated) ones. More specifically, for highly heterogeneous (scale-free) networks, the maximum entropy principle usually leads to disassortativity, providing a parsimonious explanation to the question above. Furthermore, by comparing the correlations measured in some real-world networks with those yielding maximum entropy for the same degree sequence, we find a remarkable agreement in various cases. Our approach provides a neutral model from which, in the absence of further knowledge regarding network evolution, one can obtain the expected value of correlations. In cases in which empirical observations deviate from the neutral predictions -- as happens in social networks -- one can then infer that there are specific correlating mechanisms at work.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures.     A Proposal for a Multi-Drive Heterogeneous Modular Pipe- Inspection Micro-Robot

    This paper presents the architecture used to develop a micro-robot for narrow pipes inspection. Both the electromechanical design and the control scheme will be described. In pipe environments it is very useful to have a method to retrieve information of the state of the inside part of the pipes in order to detect damages, breaks and holes. Due to the di_erent types of pipes that exists, a modular approach with di_erent types of modules has been chosen in order to be able to adapt to the shape of the pipe and to chose the most appropriate gait. The micro-robot has been designed for narrow pipes, a _eld in which there are not many prototypes. The robot incorporates a camera module for visual inspection and several drive modules for locomotion and turn (helicoidal, inchworm, two degrees of freedom rotation). The control scheme is based on semi-distributed behavior control and is also described. A simulation environment is also presented for prototypes testing

    The white dwarf cooling sequence of 47 Tucanae

    Context. 47 Tucanae is one of the most interesting, well-observed, and theoretically studied globular clusters. This allows us to determine the reliability of our understanding of white dwarf cooling sequences, to compare different methods of determining its age, and to assess other important characteristics, such as its star formation history. Aims. Here we present a population synthesis study of the cooling sequence of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. In particular, we study the distribution of effective temperatures, the shape of the color-magnitude diagram, and the corresponding magnitude and color distributions. Methods. To do this, we used an up-to-date population synthesis code based on Monte Carlo techniques that incorporates the most recent and reliable cooling sequences and an accurate modeling of the observational biases. Results. Our theoretical models and the observed data agree well. Thus, our study disproves previous claims that there are still missing physics in the white dwarf cooling models at moderately high effective temperatures. We also derive the age of the cluster using the termination of the cooling sequence and obtain a good agreement with the age determinations made using the main-sequence turn-off. Finally, the star formation history of the cluster is compatible with that obtained using main-sequence stars, which predicts two distinct populations. Conclusions. We conclude that a correct modeling of the white dwarf population of globular clusters, used in combination with the number counts of main-sequence stars, provides a unique tool to model the properties of globular clusters.Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y GeofísicasInstituto de Astrofísica de La Plat

    Management of Operational Parameters and Novel Spinneret Configurations for the Electrohydrodynamic Processing of Functional Polymers

    [EN] Functional materials have become key drivers in the development of multiple high-end technologies. Electrohydrodynamic processing (EHDP) is a straightforward method to generate polymer micro- and nanostructures that can be applied to the food, pharmaceutical, environmental, and biomedical areas, among others, since these can yield materials with higher performance. Some of the EHDP's advantages over other polymer processing technologies rely on its high versatility, by which the final assembly can be modified in different ways to combine materials with multiple properties and also in different morphological structures, and the use of room processing conditions, meaning that thermolabile ingredients can be incorporated with minimal activity loss. This review provides the historical background, process basics, and the state-of-the-art of the most recent advances achieved in the EHDP technology dealing with the control of its operational parameters to optimize processability and achieve end-product quality and homogeneity. It also focuses on the newly developed modes of operation and spinneret configurations that can lead to the formation of a wide range of micro- and nanostructures with different functionalities and solve some of its current technical limitations.     Analyzing objects in images for estimating the delamination influence on load carrying capacity of composite laminates

    The use of fiber reinforced plastics has increased in the last decades due to their unique properties. Advantages of their use are related with low weight, high strength and stiffness. Drilling of composite plates can be carried out in conventional machinery with some adaptations. However, the presence of typical defects like delamination can affect mechanical properties of produced parts. In this paper delamination influence in bearing stress of drilled hybrid carbon+glass/epoxy quasi-isotropic plates is studied by using image processing and analysis techniques. Results from bearing test show that damage minimization is an important mean to improve mechanical properties of the joint area of the plate. The appropriateness of the image processing and analysis techniques used in the measurement of the damaged area is demonstrated

    The far-infrared-radio correlation in galaxies

    The tightness and universality of the far-infrared (FIR) to radio continuum (RC) correlation is still not completely understood. This correlation is followed by all star-forming galaxies not dominated by an Active Galactic Nucleus, both globally as well as locally within the disks. There is a general consensus that star formation (SF) is the ultimate driver of the relation, in the sense that the bulk of dust emission in the FIR is powered by young stars ending their lives as supernovae which are the main sites of Cosmic Ray (CR) acceleration. Although this simplistic view is correct, it neglects many of the additional parameters that affect the correlation. Thus, a detailed understanding is still missing which is crucial in order to correctly use the RC emission as a tracer of recent SF with the important advantage not to be affected by extinction. Furthermore, a detailed understanding of the correlation will lead to a deeper understanding of dust heating, the interstellar medium (ISM) and propagation of CRs. The capabilities of the SKA are needed to make progress in our understanding of the correlation. In particular, they will allow us to (i) extend the study of the correlation to low-luminosity dwarf galaxies which are expected not to follow the correlation so well, (ii) extend the correlation to high-z objects and test whether the correlation is still fulfilled, and (iii) study the properties of CR propagation in galactic halos via changes in the spectral index in order to be able to compare the relative relevance of propagation, escape and energy losses.UL acknowledges support by the research projects AYA2011-24728 from the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia y Educación and the Junta de Andalucía (Spain) grants FQM108.     Ensemble and Greedy Approach for the Reconstruction of Large Gene Co-Expression Networks

    In the recent years, the vast amount of genetic information generated by high-throughput approaches, have led to the need of new methods for data handling. The integrative analysis of diverse-nature gene information could provide a much-sought overview to study complex biological systems and processes. In this sense, Co-expression Gene Networks (CGN) have become a powerful tool in the comprehensive analysis of gene expression. Such networks represent relationships between genes (or gene products) by means of a graph composed of nodes and edges, where nodes represent genes and edges the relationships among them. Amongst the main features of CGN, sparseness and scale-free topology may notably affect the latter network analysis. Within this framework, structure optimization techniques are also important in the reduction of the size of the networks, not only improving their topology but also keeping a positive prediction ratio. On the other hand, ensemble strategies have significantly improved the precision of results by combining different measures or methods. In this work, we present Ensemble and Greedy networks (EnGNet), a novel two-step method for CGN inference. First, EnGNet uses an ensemble strategy for co-expression networks generation. Final score is estimated by major voting among three different methdos, i.e. Spearman and Kendall coefficients and Normalized Mutual Information. Second, a greedy algorithm optimizes both the size and the topological features of the network. Not only do achieved results show that this method is able to obtain reliable networks, but also that it significantly improves the topology of the networks. Moreover, the usefulness of the method is proven by an application to a human dataset on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), revealing an innate immunity-mediated response to this pathology in accordance with previous studies. These results are indicative of the potential of CGN, and EnGNet in particular, in the unveiling of the genetic causes for complex diseases. Finally, the implications of CGN in biomarkers discovery, could lead research towards earlier detection and effective treatment of these diseases

    Composition and biological activity of the essential oil peruvian lantana camara

    The composition of the essential oil from Lantana camara L. (Verbenaccae) obtained by hydrodistillation of the aerial parts was examined by GC, GC/MS, and (13)C-NMR. The GC analysis showed that carvone is the most abundant monoterpene 75.9%, together with limonene 16.9%, accounting for 92.8% of the oil. The major components were also tested by (13)C-NMR analysis of the essential oil. The L. camara oil was assayed against several microorganisms, showing moderate antibacterial activity against the human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus (MIC 200 mu g/ml). High antioxidant activity evaluated by the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity assay (TEAC) was found (29.0 mmol Trolox/kg) and relative low anti-inflammatory activity due to its weak ability for inhibiting lipoxygenase (IC(50) = 81.5 mu g/ml)

    Nearby normal and luminous infrared galaxies with the SKA

    The SKA will routinely provide µJy sensitivity and sub-arcsecond angular resolutions at radio wavelengths. Planned SKA surveys will image vast numbers of nearby galaxies, which are expected to provide a cornerstone in our understanding of star-formation and accretion activity in the local Universe.
