Abortion: legal, deontological and ethical framework
Women and men’s psychological adjustment after abortion: a six months prospective pilot study
Background: The psychological impact of abortion is a controversial issue.
While some studies indicate that women who had elective abortions present
lower psychological distress when compared with those who had spontaneous
or therapeutic abortions, other studies found abortion to be associated with significant
psychological distress. Objectives: To assess psychological adjustment
(emotional disorder, trauma symptoms and couple relationship) one and six
months after abortion, and gender differences regarding psychological adjustment,
and to assess the moderation role of couple relationship in the effect of
the etiology of abortion on emotional disorder and trauma symptoms. Methods:
Women (n=50) with different etiologies of abortion agreed to participate, as well
as 15 partners (N=65). Assessments took place one and six months after abortion.
Measures included the Brief Symptoms Inventory, the Impact of Event
Scale-Revised and the Relationship Questionnaire. Results: A decrease in emotional
disorder for all etiologies of abortion and an increase in perceived quality
of couple relationship in therapeutic abortion were observed over time. Couple
relationship moderates the effect of the etiology of abortion on trauma symptoms
one month after abortion. Conclusion: Psychological adjustment after
abortion seems not to be exclusively related to its etiology, being influenced by
other factors such as couple relationship
The goal of psychological intervention and performed functions of psychologists as an aspect of the professional identity of psychologists : Latvian sample
Professional identity is formed by combination of several aspects, including professional practice, which for psychologists relates to psychological intervention and performed functions. The exclusive goal of psychological intervention and exclusively performed functions of psychologists are an important research subjects because more and more practicing professionals are performing activities linked to psychological intervention. The purpose of this paper was to investigate the exclusive goal of psychological intervention and exclusively performed functions of Latvian psychologists. Data was collected through an online survey developed in the framework of the international project “The Identity of Psychology” [1]. Three open-answer questions were used. Sample consisted of 54 Latvian psychologists of which 91% were women ( n = 49) and 9 % were men ( n = 5) aged from 25 to 60 years ( M = 44.94; SD = 8.98). Data was analysed using thematic categorical content analysis. Findings indicate clear diversity in the opinion about the professional practice among Latvian psychologists. The results of this study indicate limited agreement and comprehension of Latvian psychologists about their professional practice which leads to necessity for further research to investigate the causes of such outcome to determine solutions on how to strengthen their professional practice and, more broadly, professional identity.publishersversionPeer reviewe
Effect of psychology consultation on subsequent general practitioner doctor consultations
The literature is undisputed regarding the impact of mental health on public health, and there has been an increase in the use of primary healthcare, in particular, the consultations of general practitioners (GPs), with issues at this level. In the literature on the subject, the psychological intervention has been indicated as a positive factor in reversing this trend, and it is in this context that the present study was developed. We intend to explore the differences in the number of GP consultations prior to and after the psychology consultation in a Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC). To this end, data from 845 healthcare center users were collected between June 2004 and September 2014. Student’s t-test and mixed analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed. The results point out a decrease in the number of GP consultations in the period subsequent to the first psychological consultation. We discuss that psychological intervention seems to have
a positive effect, not only in improving the mental health of the population but also in the containment of costs in the health sector. The importance of the role of psychology in PHC was assumed
The Identity of Psychology in Argentina
This paper explores the Argentinean psychologists' perceptions about the objective and exclusive tasks of psychological intervention. In addition, those activities that can be shared with other professionals who are not psychologists are also investigated. This analysis aims to reveal whether psychologists share a clear position on this issue. The development of their field as a profession demands an introspective attitude towards current psychological practice. This will enable to establish precise guidelines and sustain the psychology professional identity. The research is based on the importance of building a strong identity that promotes the general public's trust in psychologists. To this end, a questionnaire with three open-ended questions was used, followed by a thematic categorical content analysis. The results show inconsistencies in the psychologists' answers to the three questions under study. In the end, the lack of consensus in defining an exclusive objective for psychological intervention is concluded
Burnout among Portuguese healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic
During COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers (HCWs) have had high workload and have been
exposed to multiple psychosocial stressors. The aim of this study was to evaluate HCWs in terms of the relative contributions of socio-demographic and mental health variables on three burnout dimensions: personal, workrelated, and client-related burnout.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed using an online questionnaire spread via social networks. A
snowball technique supported by health care institutions and professional organizations was applied.
Results: A total of 2008 subjects completed the survey. Gender, parental status, marriage status, and salary
reduction were found to be significant factors for personal burnout. Health problems and direct contact with
infected people were significantly associated with more susceptibility to high personal and work-related burnout. Frontline working positions were associated with all three dimensions. Higher levels of stress and depression in HCWs were significantly associated with increased levels of all burnout dimensions. Higher levels of satisfaction with life and resilience were significantly associated with lower levels of all burnout dimensions.
Conclusions: All three burnout dimensions were associated with a specific set of covariates. Consideration of these three dimensions is important when designing future burnout prevention programs for HCWs.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
