    Ultrasound measurement of the effects of high, medium and low hip long-axis distraction mobilization forces on the joint space width and its correlation with the joint strain

    Background: No study has evaluated the mechanical effect of different magnitudes of long axis-distraction mobilization (LADM) force on hip joint space width (JSW) or the association between the separation of joint surfaces and the strain on hip capsular ligaments. Objective: To compare the joint separation when applying three different magnitudes of LADM forces (low, medium and high) and to analyse the correlation between joint separation, strain on the inferior ilio-femoral ligament and magnitude of applied force. Design: Repeated measures controlled laboratory cadaveric study. Methods: Three magnitudes of force were applied to 11 cadaveric hip joints (mean age 73 years). Ultrasound images were used to measure joint separation, and strain gauges recorded inferior ilio-femoral ligament strain during each condition. Results: The magnitude of joint separation was significantly different between low (0.23 ± 0.19 mm), medium (0.72 ± 0.22 mm) and high (2.62 ± 0.43 mm) forces (p 0.723; p < 0.001). Conclusion: Hip joint separation and ligament strain during LADM are associated with the magnitude of the applied force

    The Molecular Biology of Vestibular Schwannomas and Its Association with Hearing Loss: A Review

    Hearing loss is the most common symptom in patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS). In the past, compressive mechanisms caused by the tumoral mass and its growth have been regarded as the most likely causes of the hearing loss associated with VS. Interestingly, new evidence proposes molecular mechanisms as an explanation for such hearing loss. Among the molecular mechanisms proposed are methylation of TP73, negative expression of cyclin D1, expression of B7-H1, increased expression of the platelet-derived growth factor A, underexpression of PEX5L, RAD54B, and PSMAL, and overexpression of CEA. Many molecular mechanisms are involved in vestibular schwannoma development; we review some of these mechanisms with special emphasis on hearing loss associated with vestibular schwannoma

    Sobrecarga del cuidador y apoyo social percibido en cuidadores de adultos mayores

    Objective: To establish if there is an association between caregiver burden and perceived social support in caregivers of older adults. Material and methods: A correlational, cross-sectional study was carried out in a sample of 138 caregivers of older adults to whom the Zarit Scale and the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale were applied. Results: Most caregivers (84,8%) bear overload; Social support predominates at a low level (69,9%). Conclusions: There is a mean inverse correlation (- 0,240) between caregiver burden and perceived social support in caregivers of older adults; it has been determined that the majority of caregivers (84,8%) bear an overload; In all the dimensions of Social Support, the Low level predominates, so that most caregivers perceive a low level of Social Support; there is an inverse correlation between the Overload variable and the Family Support dimension; there is no correlation between Overload and Support from Friends; and there is an inverse correlation between Overload and Support from Significant Others.Objetivo: Establecer si hay asociación entre la sobrecarga del cuidador y el apoyo social percibido en cuidadores de adultos mayores. Material y métodos: Se realizó un estudio correlacional, transversal, en una muestra de 138 cuidadores de adultos mayores a quienes se les aplicó la Escala de Zarit y la Escala Multidimensional Apoyo Social Percibido. Resultados: La mayoría de los cuidadores (84,8%) soportan sobrecarga; el apoyo social predomina en un nivel bajo (69,9%).     Dominance of particulate organic carbon in top mineral soils in cold regions

Discriminating between particulate and mineral-associated organic carbon can constrain the uncertainty of projected changes in global soil organic carbon stocks. Yet carbon fractions are not considered when assessing the contribution of cold regions to land carbon–climate feedbacks. Here we synthesize field paired observations of particulate and mineral-associated organic carbon in the mineral layer, along with experimental warming data, to investigate whether the particulate fraction dominates in cold regions and whether this relates to higher soil organic carbon losses with warming than in other (milder) biomes. We show that soil organic carbon in the first 30 cm of mineral soil is dominated or co-dominated by particulate carbon in both permafrost and non-permafrost soils, and in Arctic and alpine ecosystems but not in subarctic environments. Our findings indicate that soil organic carbon is most vulnerable to warming in cold regions compared with milder biomes, with this vulnerability mediated by higher warming-induced losses of particulate carbon. The massive soil carbon accumulation in cold regions appears distributed predominantly in the more vulnerable particulate fraction rather than in the more persistent mineral-associated fraction, supporting the likelihood of a strong, positive land carbon–climate feedback.We thank all authors who gathered and published the raw data in the original studies that enabled this literature synthesis.     Integrating data types to estimate spatial patterns of avian migration across the Western Hemisphere

    For many avian species, spatial migration patterns remain largely undescribed, especially across hemispheric extents. Recent advancements in tracking technologies and high-resolution species distribution models (i.e., eBird Status and Trends products) provide new insights into migratory bird movements and offer a promising opportunity for integrating independent data sources to describe avian migration. Here, we present a three-stage modeling framework for estimating spatial patterns of avian migration. First, we integrate tracking and band re-encounter data to quantify migratory connectivity, defined as the relative proportions of individuals migrating between breeding and nonbreeding regions. Next, we use estimated connectivity proportions along with eBird occurrence probabilities to produce probabilistic least-cost path (LCP) indices. In a final step, we use generalized additive mixed models (GAMMs) both to evaluate the ability of LCP indices to accurately predict (i.e., as a covariate) observed locations derived from tracking and band re-encounter data sets versus pseudo-absence locations during migratory periods and to create a fully integrated (i.e., eBird occurrence, LCP, and tracking/band re-encounter data) spatial prediction index for mapping species-specific seasonal migrations. To illustrate this approach, we apply this framework to describe seasonal migrations of 12 bird species across the Western Hemisphere during pre- and postbreeding migratory periods (i.e., spring and fall, respectively). We found that including LCP indices with eBird occurrence in GAMMs generally improved the ability to accurately predict observed migratory locations compared to models with eBird occurrence alone. Using three performance metrics, the eBird + LCP model demonstrated equivalent or superior fit relative to the eBird-only model for 22 of 24 species–season GAMMs. In particular, the integrated index filled in spatial gaps for species with over-water movements and those that migrated over land where there were few eBird sightings and, thus, low predictive ability of eBird occurrence probabilities (e.g., Amazonian rainforest in South America). This methodology of combining individual-based seasonal movement data with temporally dynamic species distribution models provides a comprehensive approach to integrating multiple data types to describe broad-scale spatial patterns of animal movement. Further development and customization of this approach will continue to advance knowledge about the full annual cycle and conservation of migratory birds

    Control of Neural Daughter Cell Proliferation by Multi-level Notch/Su(H)/E(spl)-HLH Signaling

    The Notch pathway controls proliferation during development and in adulthood, and is frequently affected in many disorders. However, the genetic sensitivity and multi-layered transcriptional properties of the Notch pathway has made its molecular decoding challenging. Here, we address the complexity of Notch signaling with respect to proliferation, using the developing Drosophila CNS as model. We find that a Notch/Su(H)/E(spl)-HLH cascade specifically controls daughter, but not progenitor proliferation. Additionally, we find that different E(spl)-HLH genes are required in different neuroblast lineages. The Notch/Su(H)/E(spl)-HLH cascade alters daughter proliferation by regulating four key cell cycle factors: Cyclin E, String/Cdc25, E2f and Dacapo (mammalian p21CIP1/p27KIP1/p57Kip2). ChIP and DamID analysis of Su(H) and E(spl)-HLH indicates direct transcriptional regulation of the cell cycle genes, and of the Notch pathway itself. These results point to a multi-level signaling model and may help shed light on the dichotomous proliferative role of Notch signaling in many other systems
