Electrospun Polycaprolactone/Aloe Vera_Chitosan Nanofibrous Asymmetric Membranes Aimed for Wound Chelinga Applications
Today, none of the wound dressings available on the market is fully capable of reproducing all the features of native skin. Herein, an asymmetric electrospun membrane was produced to mimic both layers of skin. It comprises a top dense layer (manufactured with polycaprolactone) that was designed to provide mechanical support to the wound and a bottom porous layer (composed of chitosan and Aloe Vera) aimed to improve the bactericidal activity of the membrane and ultimately the healing process. The results obtained revealed that the produced asymmetric membranes displayed a porosity, wettability, as well as mechanical properties similar to those presented by the native skin. Fibroblast cells were able to adhere, spread, and proliferate on the surface of the membranes and the intrinsic structure of the two layers of the membrane is capable of avoiding the invasion
of microorganisms while conferring bioactive properties. Such data reveals the potential of these asymmetric membranes, in the near future, to be applied as wound dressings
A genetic and evolutionary programming environment with spatially structured populations and built-in parallelism
The recent development of the Genetic and Evolutionary Computation field lead to a kaleidoscope of approaches to problem solving, which are based on a common background. These shared principles are used in order to develop a programming environment that enhances modularity, in terms of software design and implementation. The system's core encapsulates the main features of the Genetic and Evolutionary Algorithms, by identifying the entities at stake and implementing them as hierarchies of software modules. This architecture is enriched with the parallelization of the algorithms, based on spatially structured populations, following coarse-grained (Island Model) and fine-grained (Neighborhood Model) strategies. Transcriptomes analysis of Aeromonas molluscorum Av27 cells exposed to tributyltin (TBT) : unravelling the effects from the molecular level to the organism

Bioinformatics support was provided by Miguel Pinheiro from the Bioinformatics Unit at St Andrews University funded by a Wellcome Trust ISSF grant (097831/Z/11/Z).Aeromonas molluscorum Av27 cells were exposed to 0, 5 and 50 μM of TBT and the respective transcriptomes were obtained by pyrosequencing. Gene Ontology revealed that exposure to 5 μM TBT results in a higher number of repressed genes in contrast with 50 μM of TBT, where the number of over-expressed genes is greater. At both TBT concentrations, higher variations in gene expression were found in the functional categories associated with enzymatic activities, transport/binding and oxidation-reduction. A number of proteins are affected by TBT, such as the acriflavin resistance protein, several transcription-related proteins, several Hsps, ABC transporters, CorA and ZntB and other outer membrane efflux proteins, all of these involved in cellular metabolic processes, important to maintain overall cell viability. Using the STRING tool, several proteins with unknown function were related with others involved in degradation processes, such as the pyoverdine chromophore biosynthetic protein, that has been described as playing a role in the Sn-C cleavage of organotins. This approach has allowed a better understanding of the molecular effects of exposure of bacterial cells to TBT. Furthermore it contributes to the knowledge of the functional genomic aspects of bacteria exposed to this pollutant. Furthermore, the transcriptomic data gathered, and now publically available, constitute a valuable resource for comparative genome analysis.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Durum wheat diversity for heat stress tolerance during inflorescence emergence is correlated to TdHSP101C expression in early developmental stages
Research articleThe predicted world population increase along with climate changes threatens sustainable
agricultural supply in the coming decades. It is therefore vital to understand crops diversity
associated to abiotic stress response. Heat stress is considered one of the major constrains
on crops productivity thus it is essential to develop new approaches for a precocious and rigorous
evaluation of varietal diversity regarding heat tolerance. Plant cell membrane thermostability
(CMS) is a widely used method for wheat thermotolerance assessment although its
limitations require complementary solutions. In this work we used CMS assay and explored
TdHSP101C genes as an additional tool for durum wheat screening. Genomic and transcriptomic
analyses of TdHSP101C genes were performed in varieties with contrasting
CMS results and further correlated with heat stress tolerance during fertilization and seed
development. Although the durum wheat varieties studied presented a very high homology
on TdHSP101C genes (>99%) the transcriptomic assessment allowed the discrimination
between varieties with good CMS results and its correlation with differential impacts of heat
treatment during inflorescence emergence and seed development on grain yield. The evidences
here reported indicate that TdHSP101C transcription levels induced by heat stress
in fully expanded leaves may be a promising complementary screening tool to discriminate

Unravelling the hidden inter and intra-varietal diversity of durum wheat commercial varieties used in Portugal
Short CommunicationAssessing durum wheat genomic diversity is crucial in a changing environmental particularly in the
Mediterranean region where it is largely used to produce pasta. Durum wheat varieties cultivated in
Portugal and previously assessed regarding thermotolerance ability were screened for the variability
of coding sequences associated with technological traits and repetitive sequences. As expected, reduced
variability was observed regarding low molecular weight glutenin subunits (LMW-GS) but a
specific LMW-GS allelic form associated with improved pasta-making characteristics was absent in
one variety. Contrastingly, molecular markers targeting repetitive elements like microsatellites and
retrotransposons – Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) and Inter Retrotransposons Amplified
Polymorphism (IRAP) – disclosed significant inter and intra-varietal diversity. This high level of polymorphism
was revealed by the 20 distinct ISSR/IRAP concatenated profiles observed among the 23
individuals analysed. Interestingly, median joining networks and PCoA analysis grouped individuals
of the same variety and clustered varieties accordingly with geographical origin. Globally, this work
demonstrates that durum wheat breeding strategies induced selection pressure for some relevant
coding sequences while maintaining high levels of genomic variability in non-coding regions enriched

Positive Psychological Capital as a Predictor of Satisfaction With the Fly-In Fly-Out Model
The flexibility of markets and international agreements have lured a growing number
of companies to expand their business beyond frontiers in search for new markets
and a bigger business network. Specifically, expatriates became keystones to implant
and promote the so desired expansion into international markets, Particularly, Fly-in flyout (FIFO) flexpatriates. Although FIFO work practices are widely used, little is known
about how to promote these professionals’ perceived job satisfaction (JS) across the
course of their work cycles. That is why the goal of our research is to test the positive
psychological capital (PsyCap) applicability to Portuguese FIFO flexpatriates. In the
midst of the positive psychology theories, Luthans et al. (2007b) underline that workers
are the psychological capital of any organization. Therefore, the development of the
PsyCap becomes crucial and also contributes to the promotion of JS, nowadays a
construct intertwined with well-being. As such, we developed and applied a HERO–
(hope, self-efficacy, resilience, and optimism)–micro-intervention in order to assess
whether it moderated the relationship between a FIFO flexpatriates PsyCap and their
JS. The research took place over three distinct moments, both PsyCap and JS were
measured before and after the HERO micro-intervention, and again 3 months later.
The data collected shows that a positive correlation exists between FIFO flexpatriates
PsyCap and JS. Moreover, our results pointed out that the micro-intervention enhanced
FIFO flexpatriates PsyCap, and also showed that this increase lasted over (at least)

A responsabilidade civil médica na especialidade de obstetrícia : o reconhecimento da violência obstétrica em Portugal
A presente dissertação destina-se ao estudo do tema da violência obstétrica, tomando por base os resultados de estudos nacionais e internacionais. Estamos perante um fenómeno atual que também ocorre nos hospitais portugueses, onde são realizados atos sem consentimento prévio e em violação das leges artis. Pretende-se analisar o tema à luz da responsabilidade civil médica, tanto contratual como extracontratual, fazendo ainda menção à possibilidade de legislação especifica sobre o tema que permita uma maior proteção das grávidas no momento do parto.The following dissertation proposes an analysis of the theme of obstetric violence, going from the result of national and international studies. It is an ongoing phenomenon that occurs at the national hospitals, where there are practices done without the informed consent and in violation of leges artis. This study aims to analysis within the scope of medical civil liability, contractual and extracontractual.
