    Daily Fluctuation of Emotions & Memories Thereof: Design and Methods of an Event Sampling Study of Major Depression, Social Phobia, and Controls

    Symptom fluctuations and the dynamic contexts provoking these are poorly understood. This deficit is compounded by people's limited ability to accurately report about such dimensions in retrospect. Utilizing the advantages of experience sampling methodology (ESM), this study rigorously describes and tests proximal environmental, neurobiological and psychological factors associated with symptoms and mood states. Participants were assigned to three diagnostic groups: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD; n = 118), Social Phobia (SP; n = 47), or a Control Group without SP or MDD (CG; n = 119). Laboratory assessments included cognitive abilities, memory, constructs, and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). ESM lasted seven days, with six assessments per day covering symptoms, affect, daily events, social interactions, post-event processing, well-being, etc. Morning cortisol and actigraphy were also assessed during ESM. Thereafter, participants provided subjective retrospective recall estimates of the emotions they reported during ESM. The multi-level data of >10,000 observations will allow for thorough examination of fluctuations of psychopathology and well-being in two highly prevalent disorders. Using two clinical groups and a non-affected control group, the clinical specificity versus generalizability of processes can be directly tested, thus providing stimulating information about the overlap and differences between anxiety and affective disorders. This research informs about the development, fluctuation, and maintaining factors of emotions and symptoms and examines the accuracy with which participants recall these dimensions

    An upper limit on hypertriton production in collisions of Ar(1.76 AGeV)+KCl

    A high-statistic data sample of Ar(1.76 AGeV)+KCl events recorded with HADES is used to search for a hypertriton signal. An upper production limit per centrality-triggered event of 1.041.04 x 10310^{-3} on the 3σ3\sigma level is derived. Comparing this value with the number of successfully reconstructed Λ\Lambda hyperons allows to determine an upper limit on the ratio NΛ3H/NΛN_{_{\Lambda}^3H}/N_{\Lambda}, which is confronted with statistical and coalescence-type model calculations

    Dynamics of Seed-Borne Rice Endophytes on Early Plant Growth Stages

    Bacterial endophytes are ubiquitous to virtually all terrestrial plants. With the increasing appreciation of studies that unravel the mutualistic interactions between plant and microbes, we increasingly value the beneficial functions of endophytes that improve plant growth and development. However, still little is known on the source of established endophytes as well as on how plants select specific microbial communities to establish associations. Here, we used cultivation-dependent and -independent approaches to assess the endophytic bacterrial community of surface-sterilized rice seeds, encompassing two consecutive rice generations. We isolated members of nine bacterial genera. In particular, organisms affiliated with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Ochrobactrum spp. were isolated from both seed generations. PCR-based denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) of seed-extracted DNA revealed that approximately 45% of the bacterial community from the first seed generation was found in the second generation as well. In addition, we set up a greenhouse experiment to investigate abiotic and biotic factors influencing the endophytic bacterial community structure. PCR-DGGE profiles performed with DNA extracted from different plant parts showed that soil type is a major effector of the bacterial endophytes. Rice plants cultivated in neutral-pH soil favoured the growth of seed-borne Pseudomonas oryzihabitans and Rhizobium radiobacter, whereas Enterobacter-like and Dyella ginsengisoli were dominant in plants cultivated in low-pH soil. The seed-borne Stenotrophomonas maltophilia was the only conspicuous bacterial endophyte found in plants cultivated in both soils. Several members of the endophytic community originating from seeds were observed in the rhizosphere and surrounding soils. Their impact on the soil community is further discussed

    Stochastic asymmetry properties of 3D gauss-lagrange ocean waves with directional spreading

    In the stochastic Lagrange model for ocean waves the vertical and horizontal location of surface water particles are modeled as correlated Gaussian processes. In this article we investigate the statistical properties of wave characteristics related to wave asymmetry in the 3D Lagrange model. We present a modification of the original Lagrange model that can produce front-back asymmetry both of the space waves, i.e. observation of the sea surface at a fixed time, and of the time waves, observed at a fixed measuring station. The results, which are based on a multivariate form of Rice’s formula for the expected number of level crossings, are given in the form of the cumulative distribution functions for the slopes observed either by asynchronous sampling in space, or at synchronous sampling at upcrossings and down-crossings, respectively, of a specified fixed level. The theory is illustrated in a numerical section, showing how the degree of wave asymmetry depends on the directional spectral spreading and on the mean wave direction. It is seen that the asymmetry is more accentuated for high waves, a fact that may be of importance in safety analysis of capsizing risk

    International audienceMonitoring hydrogeochemical seasonality of Lake Ifrah (Morocco) was carried out between 2003 and 2006 in order to characterize the hydrogeochemical processes in the context of climatic and anthropogenic impacts. Lake Ifrah has declined significantly over the last decade. The waters are fairly alkaline, oxygenated, fairly turbid and oversaturated alkaline. The suspended load is moderately high. The hydrogeochemical facies is typically chloro-sodium bicarbonate magnesium. The lake is experiencing a significant water deficit as a result of recurrent droughts over the last three decades and marked human pressure. This is reflected by the increase in salinity manifested primarily by increased electrical conductivity and alkali contents (Na+ and K+) and chloride. This deficit is also assessed by lower levels of alkaline earth (Ca2+ and Mg2+) as a result of their precipitation as endogenic carbonates. The saturation index of calcite, aragonite and dolomite is always greater than zero. The increase in nutrients (phosphorus and nitrates) and degradation of water oxygenation reflect the acceleration of the eutrophication of the lake which is also evident from the increased particulate load and turbidity of the water
