    Redesigning a sustainable English capstone course through a virtual student-faculty partnership

    This collaborative essay between undergraduate students and a faculty member illustrates the importance of partnerships between students and faculty when redesigning courses. We ground this partnering in Students as Partner (SaP) praxis. SaP reinvigorates the faculty and student relationship as one in which both students and faculty serve as active agents in curriculum development, redesign, and assessment. In this essay, we introduce our partnership, locally ground our partnership, and highlight how we redesigned a sustainable English Department capstone course to include a cumulative, integrative assignment. Our partnership was not designed to lead to a quantifiable direct output (i.e., a publication or even a redesigned class); instead, our goal was to build community, to support each other, to learn, to write for ourselves and each other. We conclude by offering brief qualitative data on the effectiveness of our redesign efforts and how our approach may work as a model for redesigning courses in different contexts/institutions

    Simplified Models for LHC New Physics Searches

    This document proposes a collection of simplified models relevant to the design of new-physics searches at the LHC and the characterization of their results. Both ATLAS and CMS have already presented some results in terms of simplified models, and we encourage them to continue and expand this effort, which supplements both signature-based results and benchmark model interpretations. A simplified model is defined by an effective Lagrangian describing the interactions of a small number of new particles. Simplified models can equally well be described by a small number of masses and cross-sections. These parameters are directly related to collider physics observables, making simplified models a particularly effective framework for evaluating searches and a useful starting point for characterizing positive signals of new physics. This document serves as an official summary of the results from the "Topologies for Early LHC Searches" workshop, held at SLAC in September of 2010, the purpose of which was to develop a set of representative models that can be used to cover all relevant phase space in experimental searches. Particular emphasis is placed on searches relevant for the first ~50-500 pb-1 of data and those motivated by supersymmetric models. This note largely summarizes material posted at http://lhcnewphysics.org/, which includes simplified model definitions, Monte Carlo material, and supporting contacts within the theory community. We also comment on future developments that may be useful as more data is gathered and analyzed by the experiments.Comment: 40 pages, 2 figures.     Randomized clinical trial of surgery versus conservative therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome [ISRCTN84286481]

    BACKGROUND: Conservative treatment remains the standard of care for treating mild to moderate carpal tunnel syndrome despite a small number of well-controlled studies and limited objective evidence to support current treatment options. There is an increasing interest in the usefulness of wrist magnetic resonance imaging could play in predicting who will benefit for various treatments. METHOD AND DESIGN: Two hundred patients with mild to moderate symptoms will be recruited over 3 1/2 years from neurological surgery, primary care, electrodiagnostic clinics. We will exclude patients with clinical or electrodiagnostic evidence of denervation or thenar muscle atrophy. We will randomly assign patients to either a well-defined conservative care protocol or surgery. The conservative care treatment will include visits with a hand therapist, exercises, a self-care booklet, work modification/ activity restriction, B6 therapy, ultrasound and possible steroid injections. The surgical care would be left up to the surgeon (endoscopic vs. open) with usual and customary follow-up. All patients will receive a wrist MRI at baseline. Patients will be contacted at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months after randomization to complete the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Assessment Questionnaire (CTSAQ). In addition, we will compare disability (activity and work days lost) and general well being as measured by the SF-36 version II. We will control for demographics and use psychological measures (SCL-90 somatization and depression scales) as well as EDS and MRI predictors of outcomes. DISCUSSION: We have designed a randomized controlled trial which will assess the effectiveness of surgery for patients with mild to moderate carpal tunnel syndrome. An important secondary goal is to study the ability of MRI to predict patient outcomes

    Kinetics, mechanisms and ionic liquids in the uptake of n-butylamine onto low molecular weight dicarboxylic acids

    Atmospheric particles adversely affect visibility, health, and climate, yet the kinetics and mechanisms of particle formation and growth are poorly understood. Multiphase reactions between amines and dicarboxylic acids (diacids) have been suggested to contribute. In this study, the reactions of n-butylamine (BA) with solid C3-C8 diacids were studied at 296 ± 1 K using a Knudsen cell interfaced to a quadrupole mass spectrometer. Uptake coefficients for amines on the diacids with known geometric surface areas were measured at initial amine concentrations from (3-50) × 1011 cm-3. Uptake coefficients ranged from 0.7 ± 0.1 (2σ) for malonic acid (C3) to <10-6 for suberic acid (C8), show an odd-even carbon number effect, and decrease with increasing chain length within each series. Butylaminium salts formed from evaporation of aqueous solutions of BA with C3, C5 and C7 diacids (as well as C8) were viscous liquids, suggesting that ionic liquids (ILs) form on the surface during the reactions of gas phase amine with the odd carbon diacids. Predictions from the kinetic multi-layer model of aerosol surface and bulk chemistry (KM-SUB) were quantitatively consistent with uptake occurring via dissolution of the underlying diacid into the IL layer and reaction with amine taken up from the gas phase. The butylaminium salts formed from the C4 and C6 diacids were solids, and their uptake coefficients were smaller. These experiments and kinetic modeling demonstrate the unexpected formation of ILs in a gas-solid reaction, and suggest that ILs should be considered under some circumstances in atmospheric processes
