    Enhancing Sparsity by Reweighted â„“(1) Minimization

    It is now well understood that (1) it is possible to reconstruct sparse signals exactly from what appear to be highly incomplete sets of linear measurements and (2) that this can be done by constrained ℓ1 minimization. In this paper, we study a novel method for sparse signal recovery that in many situations outperforms ℓ1 minimization in the sense that substantially fewer measurements are needed for exact recovery. The algorithm consists of solving a sequence of weighted ℓ1-minimization problems where the weights used for the next iteration are computed from the value of the current solution. We present a series of experiments demonstrating the remarkable performance and broad applicability of this algorithm in the areas of sparse signal recovery, statistical estimation, error correction and image processing. Interestingly, superior gains are also achieved when our method is applied to recover signals with assumed near-sparsity in overcomplete representations—not by reweighting the ℓ1 norm of the coefficient sequence as is common, but by reweighting the ℓ1 norm of the transformed object. An immediate consequence is the possibility of highly efficient data acquisition protocols by improving on a technique known as Compressive Sensing

    Historians and other researchers have begun to recognize over the last half century or so that the papers of United States senators and representatives are a treasure of information on many aspects of American life and on America\u27s position on the world stage. These collections contain valuable data on cross-sections of the human experience, shedding light at once on political, social, familial, economic, governmental (all levels), scientific, military, racial and ethnic, environmental, and recreational developments and/or individuals involved in those various areas. Archivists face an enormous challenge in preserving and processing these collections, and making guides available that reflect the many nuances unique to each collection. Mississippi repositories contain several significant congressional collections. Due to a lengthy state tradition of returning senators and representatives to Congress for many consecutive terms, the papers of congressmen tend to be voluminous and reflect extensive periods of history at the local, state, national and international levels. This edition of The Primary Source is intended to inform readers of congressional holdings in four major Mississippi repositories: The Congressional and Political Research Center - Mississippi State University Libraries; McCain Library and Archives -University of Southern Mississippi; Law Archives - University of Mississippi; and the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. Together these four locations contain a wealth of historical information in their congressional collections, information that reflects Mississippi\u27s prominent role through the years at the highest levels of the United States government

    Glueball-Like Screening Masses in Pure SU(3) at Finite Temperatures

    We investigate the finite-temperature excitation spectrum in the gluon sector of SU(3)SU(3) pure gauge theory through measurements of screening masses in correlations of loop operators. We develop the classification of such operators under the symmetry group of the `zz-slice'. In the confined phase of the theory, we find that the spectrum dynamically realises the zero temperature symmetries. We observe a large thermal shift of the 0++0^{++} glueball mass. In the deconfined phase, the spectrum distinguishes between operators coupling to electrically and magnetically polarised gluon fields. The former yields a screening mass equal to the Wilson-line screening mass; the latter, a method for the measurement of the magnetic mass in the high-temperature limit.Comment: 20 pages, LaTeX file, no figures or macros.     We have investigated hadron screening masses, the chiral condensate, and the pion decay constant close to the deconfinement phase transition in the confined phase of QCD. The simulations were done in the quenched approximation, on a lattice of size \mbox{323×832^{3}\times 8}. We examined temperatures ranging from 0.75\tc up to 0.92\tc. We see no sign of a temperature dependence in the chiral condensate or the meson properties, but some temperature dependence for the nucleon screening mass is not excluded.Comment: Postscript file, uuencoded compresse

    Perturbative Thermodynamics of Lattice QCD with Chiral-Invariant Four-Fermion Interactions

    Lattice QCD with additional chiral-invariant four-fermion interactions is studied at nonzero temperature. Staggered Kogut-Susskind quarks are used. The four-fermion interactions are implemented by introducing bosonic auxiliary fields. A mean field treatment of the auxiliary fields is used to calculate the model's asymptotic scale parameter and perturbative thermodynamics, including the one-loop gluonic contributions to the energy, entropy, and pressure. In this approach the calculations reduce to those of ordinary lattice QCD with massive quarks.     Chromatin Profiles of Chromosomally Integrated Human Herpesvirus-6A

    Human herpesvirus-6A (HHV-6A) and 6B (HHV-6B) are two closely related betaherpesviruses that are associated with various diseases including seizures and encephalitis. The HHV-6A/B genomes have been shown to be present in an integrated state in the telomeres of latently infected cells. In addition, integration of HHV-6A/B in germ cells has resulted in individuals harboring this inherited chromosomally integrated HHV-6A/B (iciHHV-6) in every cell of their body. Until now, the viral transcriptome and the epigenetic modifications that contribute to the silencing of the integrated virus genome remain elusive. In the current study, we used a patient-derived iciHHV-6A cell line to assess the global viral gene expression profile by RNA-seq, and the chromatin profiles by MNase-seq and ChIP-seq analyses. In addition, we investigated an in vitro generated cell line (293-HHV-6A) that expresses GFP upon the addition of agents commonly used to induce herpesvirus reactivation such as TPA. No viral gene expression including miRNAs was detected from the HHV-6A genomes, indicating that the integrated virus is transcriptionally silent. Intriguingly, upon stimulation of the 293-HHV-6A cell line with TPA, only foreign promoters in the virus genome were activated, while all HHV-6A promoters remained completely silenced. The transcriptional silencing of latent HHV-6A was further supported by MNase-seq results, which demonstrate that the latent viral genome resides in a highly condensed nucleosome-associated state. We further explored the enrichment profiles of histone modifications via ChIP-seq analysis. Our results indicated that the HHV-6 genome is modestly enriched with the repressive histone marks H3K9me3/H3K27me3 and does not possess the active histone modifications H3K27ac/H3K4me3. Overall, these results indicate that HHV-6 genomes reside in a condensed chromatin state, providing insight into the epigenetic mechanisms associated with the silencing of the integrated HHV-6A genome

    Radiative D∗D^* Decay Using Heavy Quark and Chiral Symmetry

    The implications of chiral SU(3)L×SU(3)RSU(3)_L \times SU(3)_R symmetry and heavy quark symmetry for the radiative decays D∗0→D0γD^{*0}\to D^0\gamma, D∗+→D+γD^{*+}\to D^+\gamma, and Ds∗→DsγD_s^*\to D_s\gamma are discussed. Particular attention is paid to SU(3)SU(3) violating contributions of order mq1/2m_q^{1/2}.
