    Effects of plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) on yield, growth and nutrient contents of organically grown strawberry

    The effects of plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) on the fruit yield, growth and nutrient element content of strawberry cv. Fern were investigated under organic growing conditions between 2006 and 2008. The experimental plot was a completely randomized design with 3 replicates. Three PGPB strains (Pseudomonas BA-8, Bacillus OSU-142 and Bacillus M-3) were used alone or in combination as biofertilizer agent in the experiment. Data through 3 years showed that the use of PGPB significantly increased fruit yield, plant growth and leaf P and Zn contents. Root inoculation of M3 and floral and foliar spraying of OSU-142 and BA-8 bacteria stimulated plant growth resulting in significant yield increases. M3 + BA-8, BA-8 + OSU-142, M3, M3 + OSU-142 and BA-8 applications increased cumulative yield by 33.2%, 18.4%, 18.2%, 15.3% and 10.5%, respectively. Number of fruits per plant significantly increased by the applications of M3 + BA-8 (91.73) and M3 (81.58) compared with the control (68.66). In addition, P and Zn contents of strawberry leaves with bacterial inoculation significantly increased under organic growing conditions. Available P contents in soil were increased from 0.35 kg P2O5/da at the beginning of the study to 2.00, 1.97 and 1.82 kg P2O5/da by M3 + OSU-142, M3 + BA-8 and M3 + BA-8 + OSU-142 applications, respectively. Overall, the results of this study suggest that root inoculation of Bacillus M3 alone or in combination with spraying Bacillus OSU-142 or Pseudomonas BA-8 have the potential to increase the yield, growth and nutrition content of strawberry plant under organic growing conditions

    Interest rate pass-through in Turkey and impact of global financial crisis: asymmetric threshold cointegration analysis

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.This paper aims to investigate the interest rate pass-through of monetary policy rate to banking retail rates in Turkey by employing the asymmetric threshold autoregressive (TAR) and momentum threshold autoegressive (MTAR) procedures introduced by Enders and Siklos (2001). Over the period December 2001 to April 2011, the empirical results of asymmetric threshold cointegration analysis suggest that there exist significant and complete pass-through between policy rate and loan rates. Positive and negative departures from the equilibrium converge to long run path almost at the same speed. Pace of convergence is about two to three months for all loan rates. Policy rate has significant short run impact on loan rates. Our analysis revealed that there is no significant relationship between policy rate and bank deposit rates due to sluggish adjustment of deposit rates. Lastly, the speed and behavior of interest rate pass-through between policy rate and loan rates did not change when we encounter the effect of 2008 financial crisis. Having a banking sector dominated financial system in Turkey, the results suggest that banks adjust loan rates faster than deposit rates. This indicates that Central Bank can affect the consumption behavior of people, in other words aggregate demand through loan rates

    Histopathological image analysis : a review

    Over the past decade, dramatic increases in computational power and improvement in image analysis algorithms have allowed the development of powerful computer-assisted analytical approaches to radiological data. With the recent advent of whole slide digital scanners, tissue histopathology slides can now be digitized and stored in digital image form. Consequently, digitized tissue histopathology has now become amenable to the application of computerized image analysis and machine learning techniques. Analogous to the role of computer-assisted diagnosis (CAD) algorithms in medical imaging to complement the opinion of a radiologist, CAD algorithms have begun to be developed for disease detection, diagnosis, and prognosis prediction to complement the opinion of the pathologist. In this paper, we review the recent state of the art CAD technology for digitized histopathology. This paper also briefly describes the development and application of novel image analysis technology for a few specific histopathology related problems being pursued in the United States and Europe

    Productivity and Market Integration in American Communal Dairying, 1830-1875

    In our late twentieth century experience, survival of an economy seems critically dependent on well established rights to private property and a return to labor that rewards greater effort. But that need not be so. History provides examples of micro-socialist economies that internally, at least, allow for little private property for participants and a constant return to labor that is independent of effort. Some such economies may even be termed \u27successful,\u27 if success is taken to mean survival over several generations. If these communities survived without conditions that are generally thought to be necessary for success, a question worth asking is how this occurred, for we can then shed some light on what really is necessary for economic survival. Addressing this issue emphasizes the critical role of time, for even if the microsocialist economies that we study here eventually became the merest shadow of their former selves, the fact that they did flourish for so long makes them a valuable counterexample, and hence, a phenomenon in need of explanation. We consider here the dairy industry of the Shakers, which was characterized by intensive efforts to increase productivity, in part through the use of market signals, but efforts that were also limited by the ideological goals of the community. The Shakers were (and are, but since it is the historical Shakers that concern this paper, the past tense will be used) a Christian communal group. Some of their distinctive beliefs included the existence of a male and female Godhead, from which followed sexual equality, and active communication between Believers (a Shaker term for members of the sect) and denizens of the spirit world. Practices of the Society (their official name is the United Society of Believers in Christ\u27s Second Appearing, the second appearing being in the body of their foundress, an illiterate Englishwoman named Ann Lee) included pacifism, celibacy, confession of sins to elders, and joint or communal ownership of the Society\u27s assets. Each Shaker received the same return for his or her labor: room, board, clothing, and the experience of divine proximity in a community of like minded Believers (Stein 1992)

The close relation of integrable boundary conditions with integrable reductions of multi-field systems is observed. The problem of consistency of boundary conditions with the Hamiltonian formulation is discussed.     Accelerated Born-Infeld Metrics in Kerr-Schild Geometry

    We consider Einstein Born-Infeld theory with a null fluid in Kerr-Schild Geometry. We find accelerated charge solutions of this theory. Our solutions reduce to the Plebanski solution when the acceleration vanishes and to the Bonnor-Vaidya solution as the Born-Infeld parameter b goes to infinity.     Introduction: The variations in the Calpain-10 gene have been suggested to be related to susceptibility to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in different populations. In this study, we investigated the relationship between single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-19, -44 and -63 in the Calpain-10 gene and the development of T2DM in a Turkish population. Material and methods: A total of 211 subjects were recruited: 118 patients with a diagnosis of T2DM and 93 unrelated healthy subjects.Results: There were no significant differences in the genotype and allele distribution of SNPs studied between the patients with T2DM and controls (p > 0.05), whereas the frequencies of 121 haplotype and 122/121 haplotype combination were found to be higher in patients with T2DM than in controls (p < 0.05). No association was observed between the variations in the Calpain-10 gene and glycaemic control and lipid parameters (p > 0.05). The SNP-19 insertion/insertion was significantly related to increased body mass index (BMI) in male diabetic patients (p < 0.05).Conclusions: The present study indicates that 121 haplotype and 122/121 haplotype combination of SNP-19, -44 and -63 in the Calpain-10 gene are associated with the development of T2DM in Turkish patients. Autorzy przeprowadzili badanie, w którym ocenili związek między polimorfizmem pojedynczego nukleotydu (SNP)-19, -44 i -63 genu kodującego kalpainę-10 a rozwojem T2DM w tureckiej populacji.Materiał i metody: Do badania zrekrutowano 211 osób: 118 pacjentów z rozpoznaniem T2DM i 93 niespokrewnionych zdrowych osobników.Wyniki: Nie stwierdzono żadnych istotnych różnic w genotypie ani dystrybucji alleli badanych SNP między pacjentami z T2DM a osobnikami kontrolnymi (p > 0,05), choć częstości występowania haplotypu 121 i kombinacji haplotypów 122/121 była większa u pacjentów z T2DM niż osobników kontrolnych (p < 0,05). Nie stwierdzono powiązania między zmiennością genu kodującego kalpainę-10 a stopniem wyrównania glikemii i wartościami parametrów gospodarki lipidowej (p > 0,05). SNP-19 typu insercja/insercja wykazywał znamienny związek ze zwiększonym wskaźnikiem masy ciała (BMI) u mężczyzn z T2DM (p < 0,05).Wnioski: W przeprowadzonym badaniu wykazano, że haplotyp 121 oraz kombinacja haplotypów 122/121 SNP-19, -44 i -63 w genie kodującym kalpainę-10 wiążą się z rozwojem T2DM w populacji tureckiej.
