    Quorum Sensing y Vajilla Emocional

Quorum Sensing is a gastrosonic experience for three guests. A soup is served in a glass tableware (Emotional Tableware) designed as a result from a research project on associations of shapes and materials with musical emotions. The actions of each diner produce vibrations applied to the body of the others. The conceptual framework of Quorum Sensing and Emotional Tableware is multiple: relating human experience with that of other species, tactilely increasing the sense of presence in commensality, a multisensory and crossmodal approach to object design and a reflection on the use of cell phones and tablets at the table. In the future, the experience may function as an experimental device to investigate these aspects as well as the impact of vibrations on the perception of food.Quorum Sensing es una experiencia gastrosónica para tres comensales. Marble melancholy: using crossmodal correspondences of shapes, materials, and music to predict music-induced emotions

Introduction: Music is known to elicit strong emotions in listeners, and, if primed appropriately, can give rise to specific and observable crossmodal correspondences. This study aimed to assess two primary objectives: (1) identifying crossmodal correspondences emerging from music-induced emotions, and (2) examining the predictability of music-induced emotions based on the association of music with visual shapes and materials. Methods: To achieve this, 176 participants were asked to associate visual shapes and materials with the emotion classes of the Geneva Music-Induced Affect Checklist scale (GEMIAC) elicited by a set of musical excerpts in an online experiment. Results: Our findings reveal that music-induced emotions and their underlying core affect (i.e., valence and arousal) can be accurately predicted by the joint information of musical excerpt and features of visual shapes and materials associated with these music-induced emotions. Interestingly, valence and arousal induced by music have higher predictability than discrete GEMIAC emotions. Discussion: These results demonstrate the relevance of crossmodal correspondences in studying music-induced emotions. The potential applications of these findings in the fields of sensory interactions design, multisensory experiences and art, as well as digital and sensory marketing are briefly discussed.Peer Reviewe

Gamma-Ray Bursts and the Fireball Model

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have puzzled astronomers since their accidental discovery in the late sixties. The BATSE detector on the COMPTON-GRO satellite has been detecting one burst per day for the last six years. Its findings have revolutionized our ideas about the nature of these objects. They have shown that GRBs are at cosmological distances. This idea was accepted with difficulties at first. The recent discovery of an X-ray afterglow by the Italian/Dutch satellite BeppoSAX has led to a detection of high red-shift absorption lines in the optical afterglow of GRB970508 and in several other bursts and to the identification of host galaxies to others. This has confirmed the cosmological origin. Cosmological GRBs release 10511053\sim 10^{51}-10^{53}ergs in a few seconds making them the most (electromagnetically) luminous objects in the Universe. The simplest, most conventional, and practically inevitable, interpretation of these observations is that GRBs result from the conversion of the kinetic energy of ultra-relativistic particles or possibly the electromagnetic energy of a Poynting flux to radiation in an optically thin region. This generic "fireball" model has also been confirmed by the afterglow observations. The "inner engine" that accelerates the relativistic flow is hidden from direct observations. Consequently it is difficult to infer its structure directly from current observations. Recent studies show, however, that this ``inner engine'' is responsible for the complicated temporal structure observed in GRBs. This temporal structure and energy considerations indicates that the ``inner engine'' is associated with the formation of a compact object - most likely a black hole.Comment: A review - Latex, 59 pages including 29 figures.
