Performance of a large limited streamer tube cell in drift mode
The performance of a large (3x3 ) streamer tube cell in drift mode is
shown. The detector space resolution has been studied using cosmic muons
crossing an high precision silicon telescope. The experimental results are
compared with a GARFIELD simulation.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures. Accepted by Nucl. Instr. and Methods
High resolution pixel detectors for e+e- linear colliders
The physics goals at the future e+e- linear collider require high performance
vertexing and impact parameter resolution. Two possible technologies for the
vertex detector of an experimental apparatus are outlined in the paper: an
evolution of the Hybrid Pixel Sensors already used in high energy physics
experiments and a new detector concept based on the monolithic CMOS sensors.Comment: 8 pages, to appear on the Proceedings of the International Workshop

Application of a prioritisation scheme for seismic intervention in schools buildings in Italy
A risk management framework has recently been developed to assign priorities for the rehabilitation of school buildings in Italy, and to give timescales within which retrofit or demolition must take place. Since it is not practical to carry out a detailed assessment of the 60,000 Italian state and public schools, the framework is a multiple-level procedure which aims to identify the highest-risk buildings based on filters of increasing detail, and reduces the size of the building inventory at each step. The first risk ranking is based on a strength deficit, which measures the difference between the current design forces defined for the building site and an estimation of the level of seismic resistance which was required at the time of design. The second ranking is based on lateral strength calculations that are already available for a large portion of the Italian masonry building stock, and that are obtained from a survey form that is familiar to Italian engineers. Finally, a simplified displacement-based methodology is used to give a more accurate assessment of seismic risk based on a limited amount of geometrical and material data. The final assessment leads to a capacity ratio and a risk rating, which are used within a transparent procedure to assign priorities for seismic intervention, and timescales within which detailed assessment leading to retrofit or demolition must take place. The first step of the methodology has been applied herein to the school building stock within two Regions in Italy and preliminary results are presented
High Resolution Hybrid Pixel Sensors for the e+e- TESLA Linear Collider Vertex Tracker
In order to fully exploit the physics potential of a future high energy e+e-
linear collider, a Vertex Tracker, providing high resolution track
reconstruction, is required. Hybrid Silicon pixel sensors are an attractive
option, for the sensor technology, due to their read-out speed and radiation
hardness, favoured in the high rate environment of the TESLA e+e- linear
collider design but have been so far limited by the achievable single point
space resolution. In this paper, a conceptual design of the TESLA Vertex
Tracker, based on a novel layout of hybrid pixel sensors with interleaved cells
to improve their spatial resolution, is presented.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, to appear in the Proceedings of the Vertex99

Implementation of the Hierarchical Reference Theory for simple one-component fluids
Combining renormalization group theoretical ideas with the integral equation
approach to fluid structure and thermodynamics, the Hierarchical Reference
Theory is known to be successful even in the vicinity of the critical point and
for sub-critical temperatures. We here present a software package independent
of earlier programs for the application of this theory to simple fluids
composed of particles interacting via spherically symmetrical pair potentials,
restricting ourselves to hard sphere reference systems. Using the hard-core
Yukawa potential with z=1.8/sigma for illustration, we discuss our
implementation and the results it yields, paying special attention to the core
condition and emphasizing the decoupling assumption's role.Comment: RevTeX, 16 pages, 2 figures. Minor changes, published versio
Update on safety during pregnancy of biological agents and some immunosuppressive anti-rheumatic drugs
A consensus paper concerning the interaction of anti-rheumatic drugs and reproduction was published in 2006, representing data collected during the year 2004 and 2005. Because of an increasing use of biological agents in women of fertile age, the information was updated for the years 2006 and 2007. Experts disagree whether TNF-inhibitors should be stopped as soon as pregnancy is recognized or may be continued throughout pregnancy. Pregnancy experience with abatacept and rituximab is still too limited to prove their safety for the developing fetus. They must be withdrawn before a planned pregnancy. LEF has not been proven to be a human teratogen. Registries of transplant recipients have shown that cyclosporin (CsA) and tacrolimus do not increase the rate of congenital anomalies, whereas mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) clearly carries a risk for congenital anomalies. Prophylactic withdrawal of drugs before pregnancy is mandatory for abatacept, rituximab, LEF and MMF. Data remain insufficient for gonadal toxicity of immunosuppressive drugs in men and for excretion of these drugs in human breast mil
High sensitivity double beta decay study of 116-Cd and 100-Mo with the BOREXINO Counting Test Facility (CAMEO project)
The unique features (super-low background and large sensitive volume) of the
CTF and BOREXINO set ups are used in the CAMEO project for a high sensitivity
study of 100-Mo and 116-Cd neutrinoless double beta decay. Pilot measurements
with 116-Cd and Monte Carlo simulations show that the sensitivity of the CAMEO
experiment (in terms of the half-life limit for neutrinoless double beta decay)
is (3-5) 10^24 yr with a 1 kg source of 100-Mo (116-Cd, 82-Se, and 150-Nd) and
about 10^26 yr with 65 kg of enriched 116-CdWO_4 crystals placed in the liquid
scintillator of the CTF. The last value corresponds to a limit on the neutrino
mass of less than 0.06 eV. Similarly with 1000 kg of 116-CdWO_4 crystals
located in the BOREXINO apparatus the neutrino mass limit can be pushed down to
m_nu<0.02 eV.Comment: 29 pages, LaTex, 9 eps figure
