    The Effect of a Threshold Proportional Reinsurance Strategy on Ruin Probabilities

    In the context of a compound Poisson risk model, we define a threshold proportional reinsurance strategy: A retention level k1 is applied whenever the reserves are less than a determinate threshold b, and a retention level k2 is applied in the other case. We obtain the integro-differential equation for the Gerber-Shiu function (defined in Gerber and Shiu (1998)) in this model, which allows us to obtain the expressions for ruin probability and Laplace transforms of time of ruin for several distributions of the claim sizes.     Analysis of the Catalan Haute Cuisine Success: The Role of Education and Network Creation

    This paper analyses two of the success factors of the Catalan haute cuisine: education and network creation. Fifty-four interviews with Michelin-starred restaurant chefs were done, using two questionnaires, one for each factor studied. Cross-case studies were analysed.Results show that both factors are important and mutually correlated. Education is important to have the bases to understand and enrich the current cuisine, and also act as a pool of relationships creation. Regarding the second factor, the majority of chefs started their relationships at a professional level and some became personal. A framework of collaboration, respect, admiration and joint objectives are the most highlighted key results. The future of this sector, according to the interviewees, is ensured by the new generations of chefs but also because of the society interest. Additional aspects explaining the success of the cuisine are presented.To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first works presenting the success of this cuisine studying these two factors in-depth.

    In this paper we present a new reinsurance strategy, called threshold strategy, that has a different behaviour depending on the reserves. Whenever the reserves are less than a certain level, the portfolio manager decides to apply a proportional reinsurance. If the reserves are greater than b, it is considered that the level of solvency is enough, and then the decision is not ceding any risk. The study of the effect of the introduction of the threshold reinsurance on the survival probability, and the comparison with the proportional reinsurance and the option of not reinsuring, allows us to find equivalent strategies of reinsurance from the solvency point of view.survival probability, proportional reinsurance, threshold reinsurance, risk theory

    Histidine-Rich C-Terminal Tail of Mycobacterial GroEL1 and Its Copper Complex─The Impact of Point Mutations

    The mycobacterial histidine-rich GroEL1 protein differs significantly compared to the well-known methionine/glycine-rich GroEL chaperonin. It was predicted that mycobacterial GroEL1 can play a significant role in the metal homeostasis of Mycobacteria but not, as its analogue, in protein folding. In this paper, we present the properties of the GroEL1 His-rich C-terminus as a ligand for Cu(II) ions. We studied the stoichiometry, stability, and spectroscopic features of copper complexes of the eight model peptides: L1-Ac-DHDHHHGHAH, L2- Ac-DKPAKAEDHDHHHGHAH, and six mutants of L2 in the pH range of 2-11. We revealed the impact of adjacent residues to the His-rich fragment on the complex stability: the presence of Lys and Asp residues significantly increases the stability of the system. The impact of His mutations was also examined: surprisingly, the exchange of each single His to the Gln residue did not disrupt the ability of the ligand to provide three binding sites for Cu(II) ions. Despite the most possible preference of the Cu(II) ion for the His9-His13 residues (Ac-DKPAKAEDHDHHH-) of the model peptide, especially the His11 residue, the study shows that there is not only one possible binding mode for Cu(II). The significance of this phenomenon is very important for the GroEL1 function -if the single mutation occurs naturally, the protein would be still able to interact with the metal ion

    Whole genome analyses based on single, field collected spores of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Funneliformis geosporum

    Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are ubiquitous mutualistic symbionts of most terrestrial plants and many complete their lifecycles underground. Whole genome analysis of AM fungi has long been restricted to species and strains that can be maintained under controlled conditions that facilitate collection of biological samples. There is some evidence suggesting that AM fungi can adapt to culture resulting in phenotypic and possibly also genotypic changes in the fungi. In this study, we used field isolated spores of AM fungi and identified them as Funneliformis geosporum based on morphology and phylogenetic analyses. We separately assembled the genomes of two representative spores using DNA sequences of 19 and 22 individually amplified nuclei. The genomes were compared with previously published data from other members of Glomeraceae including two strains of F. mosseae. No significant differences were observed among the species in terms of gene content, while the single nucleotide polymorphism density was higher in the strains of F. geosporum than in the strains of F. mosseae. In this study, we demonstrate that it is possible to sequence and assemble genomes from AM fungal spores sampled in the field, which opens up the possibility to include uncultured AM fungi in phylogenomic and comparative genomic analysis and to study genomic variation in natural populations of these important plant symbionts

    In-depth Phylogenomic Analysis of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Based on a Comprehensive Set of de novo Genome Assemblies

    Morphological characters and nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) phylogenies have so far been the basis of the current classifications of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. Improved understanding of the evolutionary history of AM fungi requires extensive ortholog sampling and analyses of genome and transcriptome data from a wide range of taxa. To circumvent the need for axenic culturing of AM fungi we gathered and combined genomic data from single nuclei to generate de novo genome assemblies covering seven families of AM fungi. We successfully sequenced the genomes of 15 AM fungal species for which genome data was not previously available. Comparative analysis of the previously published Rhizophagus irregularis DAOM197198 assembly confirm that our novel workflow generates genome assemblies suitable for phylogenomic analysis. Predicted genes of our assemblies, together with published protein sequences of AM fungi and their sister clades, were used for phylogenomic analyses. We evaluated the phylogenetic placement of Glomeromycota in relation to its sister phyla (Mucoromycota and Mortierellomycota), and found no support to reject a polytomy. Finally, we explored the phylogenetic relationships within Glomeromycota. Our results support family level classification from previous phylogenetic studies, and the polyphyly of the order Glomerales with Claroideoglomeraceae as the sister group to Glomeraceae and Diversisporales

    Clinical and Epidemiological Characteristics of Streptococcus suis Infections in Catalonia, Spain

    Introduction: Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is a human zoonotic pathogen of occupational origin, with infection acquired through contact with live pigs or pig meat. Pig farming is one of Catalonia's biggest industries and as a result this region of Spain has one of the highest density pig populations per km2. The aim of our study was to describe the infections caused by S. suis occurring in that area over a 9-year period. Materials and Methods: A retrospective, multi-center study was carried out by searching records from 15 hospitals in Catalonia for the period between 2010 and 2019. Results: Over the study period altogether nine cases of S. suis infection were identified in five hospitals, with five of these cases occurring in the 2018-2019 period. The mean age of patients was 48 ± 8.9 years and all of them were males. Five patients (55.6%) worked in pig farms. The most frequent manifestation of infection was meningitis (5 cases; 55.6%) followed by septic arthritis (3 cases; 33.3%). None of the patients died at 30 days; nonetheless, 4 developed hearing loss as a long-term complication. Conclusion: The most commonly identified S. suis infection was meningitis. Over 50% of the episodes occurred in the last 2 years and have affected pig farm workers. Further surveillance is needed in order to know its prevalence

    The Cornella Health Interview Survey Follow-Up (CHIS.FU) Study: design, methods, and response rate

    BACKGROUND: The aim of this report is to describe the main characteristics of the design, including response rates, of the Cornella Health Interview Survey Follow-up Study. METHODS: The original cohort consisted of 2,500 subjects (1,263 women and 1,237 men) interviewed as part of the 1994 Cornella Health Interview Study. A record linkage to update the address and vital status of the cohort members was carried out using, first a deterministic method, and secondly a probabilistic one, based on each subject's first name and surnames. Subsequently, we attempted to locate the cohort members to conduct the phone follow-up interviews. A pilot study was carried out to test the overall feasibility and to modify some procedures before the field work began. RESULTS: After record linkage, 2,468 (98.7%) subjects were successfully traced. Of these, 91 (3.6%) were deceased, 259 (10.3%) had moved to other towns, and 50 (2.0%) had neither renewed their last municipal census documents nor declared having moved. After using different strategies to track and to retain cohort members, we traced 92% of the CHIS participants. From them, 1,605 subjects answered the follow-up questionnaire. CONCLUSION: The computerized record linkage maximized the success of the follow-up that was carried out 7 years after the baseline interview. The pilot study was useful to increase the efficiency in tracing and interviewing the respondents

    CA125-Guided Diuretic Treatment Versus Usual Care in Patients With Acute Heart Failure and Renal Dysfunction

    Background: The optimal diuretic treatment strategy for patients with acute heart failure and renal dysfunction remains unclear. Plasma carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) is a surrogate of fluid overload and a potentially valuable tool for guiding decongestion therapy. The aim of this study was to determine if a CA125-guided diuretic strategy is superior to usual care in terms of short-term renal function in patients with acute heart failure and renal dysfunction at presentation. Methods: This multicenter, open-label study randomized 160 patients with acute heart failure and renal dysfunction into 2 groups (1:1). Loop diuretics doses were established according to CA125 levels in the CA125-guided group (n = 79) and in clinical evaluation in the usual-care group (n = 81). Changes in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) at 72 and 24 hours were the co-primary endpoints, respectively. Results: The mean age was 78 ± 8 years, the median amino-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide was 7765 pg/mL, and the mean eGFR was 33.7 ± 11.3 mL/min/1.73m2. Over 72 hours, the CA125-guided group received higher furosemide equivalent dose compared to usual care (P = 0.011), which translated into higher urine volume (P = 0.042). Moreover, patients in the active arm with CA125 >35 U/mL received the highest furosemide equivalent dose (P <0.001) and had higher diuresis (P = 0.013). At 72 hours, eGFR (mL/min/1.73m2) significantly improved in the CA125-guided group (37.5 vs 34.8, P = 0.036), with no significant changes at 24 hours (35.8 vs 39.5, P = 0.391). Conclusion: A CA125-guided diuretic strategy significantly improved eGFR and other renal function parameters at 72 hours in patients with acute heart failure and renal dysfunction
