Effect of slight crosslinking on the mechanical relaxation behavior of poly(2-ethoxyethyl methacrylate) chains
The synthesis, thermal and mechanical characterizations of uncrosslinked and lightly crosslinked poly(2-ethoxyethyl methacrylate) are reported. The uncrosslinked poly(2-ethoxyethyl methacrylate) exhibits in the glassy state two relaxations called in increasing order of temperature, the gamma and beta processes respectively. These are followed by a prominent glass rubber or alpha relaxation. By decreasing the chains mobility by a small amount of crosslinking, the beta relaxation disappears and the peak maximum associated
with the alpha relaxation is shifted from 268 K to 278 K, at 1 Hz. An investigation of the storage relaxation modulus of the crosslinked polymer indicates two inflexion points that presumably are related to segmental motions of dangling chains of the crosslinked networks and to cooperative motions of the chains between crosslinking points. Nanodomains formed by side-groups flanked by the backbone give rise to a Maxwell Wagner Sillars relaxation in the dielectric spectra that have no incidence in the mechanical relaxation
spectra. We thank Dr. J. Guzman (Madrid) for providing us with the CEOEMA sample. This work was financially supported by the DGCYT and CAM through the Grant MAT2008-06725-C03 and MAT2012-33483.

Neutron scattering study of the poly(butylmethacrylate) isomers
International audienceMolecular mobility of poly(butylmethacrylate) isomers, which differ in the length and microstructure of the side chain, is investigated with elastic temperature scans applying neutron backscattering. The onset of dynamics can be described by a distribution of rotation rate originating from the dynamics of the methyl groups in the sidechain which sense various local environments

International audienceDielectric and mechanical spectroscopies have been used to study the dynamics in poly(butyl methacrylate) isomers (namely PnBMA, PiBMA and PtBMA). This analysis has revealed four relaxation processes: d, ?, Ăź and a and has allowed the observation of the evolution of molecular relaxation phenomena with the lateral chain steric hindrance. The a relaxation is associated with the glass transition of the isomers and depends strongly on the lateral chain structure. The secondary relaxation phenomena are very similar for the three isomers. Arrhenius diagrams have been plotted for the three isomers. The activation parameters have been calculated from Arrhenius equation for the sub-glass processes d and ? whereas the dynamics are characterized by a VogelFulcherTamman law for the a relaxations. With a deconvolution procedure for the a and Ăź processes, a departure from the Arrhenius law of the Ăź process in the vicinity of the merging between the a and Ăź phenomena is observed for each isomer
