    Composition effect matters: Decomposing the gender pay gap in Chinese university graduates

    The purpose of this article is to decompose the composition effect and wage structure effect of the gender starting pay gap in Chinese university graduates at every quantile. The article aims to determine if the pay gap at every quantile is a result of gender characteristics difference, or the differences in returns to those characteristics. A 2007 Chinese university survey of new graduates employment and capacity conducted by an education research company MyCOS institute is used. This article exploits a counterfactual decomposition analysis using quantile regression to decompose the gender pay gap into one component that is based on differences in characteristics and one component that is based on differences in coefficients across the log wage distribution. We find that the majority of the gender pay differential is attributed to the gender difference in the endowment of human capital and the composition effect explains 30–60% of the pay difference at each quantile of the log wage distribution. It means that female graduates have almost the same rewards to characteristics as their male counterparts, especially at the bottom of the log wage distribution. We also find that female graduates have lower mean work capacity than male graduates and work capacity is positively related with wage. This article provides policy implications on how to reduce the gender pay gap after higher education reform in a transition economy

    Protective Mechanism of Humanin Against Oxidative Stress in Aging-Related Cardiovascular Diseases

    Physiological reactive oxygen species (ROS) are important regulators of intercellular signal transduction. Oxidative and antioxidation systems maintain a dynamic balance under physiological conditions. Increases in ROS levels destroy the dynamic balance, leading to oxidative stress damage. Oxidative stress is involved in the pathogenesis of aging-related cardiovascular diseases (ACVD), such as atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, and heart failure, by contributing to apoptosis, hypertrophy, and fibrosis. Oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria is the main source of ROS. Increasing evidence demonstrates the relationship between ACVD and humanin (HN), an endogenous peptide encoded by mitochondrial DNA. HN protects cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, and fibroblasts from oxidative stress, highlighting its protective role in atherosclerosis, ischemia–reperfusion injury, and heart failure. Herein, we reviewed the signaling pathways associated with the HN effects on redox signals, including Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1)/nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA), c-jun NH2 terminal kinase (JNK)/p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK), adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK), and phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt)-Janus kinase 2 (JAK2)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3). Furthermore, we discussed the relationship among HN, redox signaling pathways, and ACVD. Finally, we propose that HN may be a candidate drug for ACVD

    Variability of the giant X-ray bump in GRB 121027A and possible origin

    The particular giant X-ray bump of GRB 121027A triggered by \emph{Swift} is quite different from the typical X-ray flares in gamma-ray bursts. There exhibit four parts of the observed structural variabilities in the rise and decay phase of the bump. Considering the quality of four parts of the data, we can only analyze the data from about 5300 s to about 6100 s in the bump using the stepwise filter correlation method (Gao et al. 2012), and find that the 86−9.4+5.9 s86^{+5.9}_{-9.4}~\rm s periodic oscillation may exist, which is confirmed by the Lomb-Scargle method (Scargle 1982). Furthermore, a jet precession model (Liu et al. 2010) is proposed to account for such a variability.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Artificial radionuclides in neon flying squid from the northwestern Pacific in 2011 following the Fukushima accident

    In order to better understand the impact of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident on a commercial marine species, neon flying squid (Ommastrephes bartramii) samples obtained from the northwestern Pacific in November 2011 were analyzed for a range of artificial and natural radionuclides (Cs-134, Cs-137, Ag-110m, U-238, Ra-226, and K-40). Short-lived radionuclides Cs-134 and Ag-110m released from the FDNPP accident were found in the samples, with an extremely high water-to-organism concentration ratio for Ag-110m ( &gt; 2.9×104). While accident-derived radionuclides were present, their associated dose rates for the squid were far lower than the relevant benchmark of 10&thinsp;”Gy&thinsp;h−1. For human consumers ingesting these squid, the dose contribution from natural radionuclides, including Po-210, was far greater ( &gt; 99.9&thinsp;%) than that of Fukushima-accident radionuclides ( &lt; 0.1&thinsp;%). The whole-body to tissue and whole-body to gut concentration ratios were calculated and reported, providing a simple method to estimate the whole-body concentration in environmental monitoring programs, and filling a data gap for concentration ratios in cephalopods. Our results help fill data gaps in uptake of nuclear power plant radionuclides in the commercially important Cephalopoda class and add to scarce data on open-ocean nekton in the northwestern Pacific shortly after the Fukushima accident.</p

    Geochemical and microbial community determinants of reductive dechlorination at a site biostimulated with glycerol

    Biostimulation is widely used to enhance reductive dechlorination of chlorinated ethenes in contaminated aquifers. However, the knowledge on corresponding biogeochemical responses is limited. In this study glycerol was injected in an aquifer contaminated with cis-dichloroethene (cDCE), and geochemical and microbial shifts were followed for 265 days. Consistent with anoxic conditions and sulfate reduction after biostimulation, MiSeq 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed temporarily increased relative abundance of Firmicutes, Bacteriodetes and sulfate reducing Deltaproteobacteria. In line with 13C cDCE enrichment and increased Dehalococcoides mccartyi (Dcm) numbers, dechlorination was observed towards the end of the field experiment, albeit being incomplete with accumulation of vinyl chloride. This was concurrent with i) decreased concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), reduced relative abundances of fermenting and sulfate reducing bacteria that have been suggested to promote Dcm growth by providing electron donor (H2) and essential corrinoid cofactors, ii) increased sulfate concentration and increased relative abundance of Epsilonproteobacteria and Deferribacteres as putative oxidizers of reduced sulfur compounds. Strong correlations of DOC, relative abundance of fermenters and sulfate reducers, and dechlorination imply the importance of syntrophic interactions to sustain robust dechlorination. Tracking microbial and environmental parameters that promote/preclude enhanced reductive dechlorination should aid development of sustainable bioremediation strategies.     Numerical simulation on the aerodynamic performance of the high-speed train under crosswinds

    With the continuously increased speed of the high-speed train, the lateral aerodynamic performance of high-speed trains has attracted more and more attention. Under strong crosswinds, the aerodynamic performance of trains deteriorate and air drag, lift and lateral forces borne by trains quickly increase, which has an impact on the lateral stability of trains and even leads to train derailment. This paper adopted computational fluid dynamics theory to establish an aerodynamic model for a high-speed train, computed aerodynamic forces and moments acting on the high-speed train and obtained the unsteady flow field of the high-speed train. In the meanwhile, this paper combined with multi-body system dynamics theory to establish a system dynamics model for the train and analyzed the safe aerodynamic performance of the high-speed train under cross winds. Computational results showed: Under cross winds, the aerodynamic performance of the high-speed train had a random fluctuation. When wind direction angle was 90°, aerodynamic forces (drag, lift and lateral forces) and moments (overturning moment, shaking moment and nodding moment) borne by the high-speed train were the largest; train speed was a main factor affecting the size of positive pressures of train and cross wind velocity had no obvious impacts on the positive and negative pressures of train body; the aerodynamic forces and moments of the high-speed train had a random fluctuation within a certain range with time; the frequency for the peak value of power spectral density of lateral forces of head train was within 25 Hz and the peak value of power spectral density was the largest when the main frequency was 1.6 Hz; the frequency for the peak value of power spectral density of overturning moment of head train was within 20 Hz and main frequency was 0.57 Hz. When the cross wind speed was 15 m/s, all safety indexes of the high-speed train running at the speed of 250 km/h were within the range of limited values and satisfied design requirements. Aerodynamic performance of the high-speed train with the suction chamber under the cross wind was computed and compared with original results. Aerodynamic force and force moments of the high-speed train under cross wind will be reduced obviously and running safety of the high-speed train can be improved through application of the suction chamber
