Genetic susceptibility to the development of primary open angle glaucoma

    No full text
Background: Primary open angle glaucoma is a multifactorial optic neuropathy and associated with a number of factors such as age, ethnicity, family history, central corneal thickness, and intraocular pressure (IOP). In addition, it might be associated with myopia and certain systemic disorders. Family history is the highest risk factor as shown by the presence of glaucoma in first-degree relatives. Purpose: To assess the potential for the development of glaucoma due to genetically predisposed features of ocular anatomy and age-related changes in these features based on a case glaucoma in monozygotic siblings. Materials and Methods: We analyzed the clinical case of two monozygotic sisters with the disease based on complaints, history, physical and instrumental examination, treatment and outcomes. Results: The two monozygotic sisters (1) were diagnosed with the same disorder approximately at the same age, (2) presented with similar ocular biometric characteristics and age-related changes of the anterior eye, and (3) underwent the same surgery on both eyes, which resulted in improved visual functions, stable IOP reduction, stable perimetric visual fields, and stable OCT derived RNFL thickness. Conclusion: The results obtained in monozygotic siblings confirm that genetic susceptibility to changes in anterior eye parameters and age-related changes in anterior ocular structures along with environmental factors constitute the main cause of hydrodynamic impairment resulting in the development of glaucoma

Introduction. The social and medical implication of cardiovascular diseases is determined by their frequency, early disability and high mortality they cause. High mortality of working age men is one of the primary state problems in Russia. The greatest concern is caused by negative changes in health status of men aged 18–27 years who determine the military potential and thus the safety of the country. The defects of public health services and medical support of young men affect the primary criterion of system of preparing citizens to military service effectiveness – fitness for service status. Every 5th young man liable for military service is send to health care facilities for follow-up examination. Also every 4–5th from those on military service discharges from the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation early as improperly called up for military service for medical reasons. Among the reasons for early discharge of military personnel cardiovascular diseases rank first. Objective. To determine prevalence of hypertension as cardiovascular risk factor in military aged male according to physical evaluation results. Materials and methods. An analysis of statistical data provided by State-owned Federal State Institution “The Main Center of Military Medical Examination of the Ministry of Defense of Russian Federation” in the Western Military District in 2011–2016 year and data on results of military-medical examination of recruited men in military registration and enlistment office of Izmaylovo district of Eastern Administrative Okrug in Moscow in 2011–2016 year was conducted. Results. In the Western Military District cardiovascular diseases amounted to 26‰ in 2011, 22.3‰ in 2012, 19.5‰ in 2013, 32‰ in 2014, 32‰ in 2015, and 27‰ in 2016 year. The percentage of newly diagnosed hypertension did not exceed 13.8‰, with its maximum in 2011 year and tendency to decrease through analyzed 6 years (11.4, 10.0, 10.0, 9.0, 7.0‰ respectively). All in all a decrease of total number of young men was observed in Moscow in the last 4 years, from 2011 to 2014. More than 58% military aged male committed to military registration and enlistment office of Izmaylovo district in Moscow have signs of various diseases and are not suitable for military service for health reasons. According to data on disease distribution in the abovementioned district, cardiovascular diseases took the second place and accounted for 12.6% in 2011 year. In the following 2012, 2013, and 2014 years the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases decreased to 8.9, 8.1, and 7.3%, respectively, so they took the 5th place. However, in 2015 and 2016 years cardiovascular diseases were again among the top three, giving way to musculoskeletal and nervous system disorders. Conclusion. Detection of hypertension on initial stages of the disease and differential diagnostics with other diseases with similar clinical symptoms is a crucial task and providing high quality medical support of military men is essential for high military effectiveness of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federatio

Intramolecular hydrogen bonding stabilizes trans-configuration in a mixed carbene/isocyanide PdII complexes

    No full text
Aromatic amidines 1a-e undergo facile reaction with one isocyanide in PdCl2(CNBut)2 giving carbene complexes 2b-d (Scheme 2) in high isolated yields (79–95%). The structures of 2b–d were confirmed by the 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies, high resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS), IR, the elemental analyses (C, H, N), and X-ray diffraction analysis for 2c, which revealed that the carbene and unreacted isocyanide ligands were located in a mutually trans position. Such arrangement was unexpected since it did not fit trans effect rule. Stabilization of the unfavorable isomer was rationalized by intramolecular hydrogen bonding. The nature of the intramolecular non-covalent interactions, which were responsible for the stabilization of the trans-isomer, was studied theoretically using DFT calculations and topological analysis of the electron density distribution within the framework of Bader's theory (QTAIM method). © 202

Distance Learning in Higher Education During Covid-19

COVID-19’s pandemic has hastened the expansion of online learning across all levels of education. Countries have pushed to expand their use of distant education and make it mandatory in view of the danger of being unable to resume face-to-face education. The most frequently reported disadvantages are technological challenges and the resulting inability to open the system. Prior to the pandemic, interest in distance learning was burgeoning, as it was a unique style of instruction. The mini-review aims to ascertain students’ attitudes about distant learning during COVID-19. To accomplish the objective, articles were retrieved from the ERIC database. We utilize the search phrases “Distance learning” AND “University” AND “COVID.” We compiled a list of 139 articles. We chose papers with “full text” and “peer reviewed only” sections. Following the exclusion, 58 articles persisted. Then, using content analysis, publications relating to students’ perspectives on distance learning were identified. There were 27 articles in the final list. Students’ perspectives on distant education are classified into four categories: perception and attitudes, advantages of distance learning, disadvantages of distance learning, and challenges for distance learning. In all studies, due of pandemic constraints, online data gathering methods were selected. Surveys and questionnaires were utilized as data collection tools. When students are asked to compare face-to-face and online learning techniques, they assert that online learning has the potential to compensate for any limitations caused by pandemic conditions. Students’ perspectives and degrees of satisfaction range widely, from good to negative. Distance learning is advantageous since it allows for learning at any time and from any location. Distance education benefits both accomplishment and learning. Staying at home is safer and less stressful for students during pandemics. Distance education contributes to a variety of physical and psychological health concerns, including fear, anxiety, stress, and attention problems. Many schools lack enough infrastructure as a result of the pandemic’s rapid transition to online schooling. Future researchers can study what kind of online education methods could be used to eliminate student concerns. Copyright © 2022 Masalimova, Khvatova, Chikileva, Zvyagintseva, Stepanova and Melnik
