First Dark Matter Results from the XENON100 Experiment
The XENON100 experiment, in operation at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran
Sasso in Italy, is designed to search for dark matter WIMPs scattering off 62
kg of liquid xenon in an ultra-low background dual-phase time projection
chamber. In this letter, we present first dark matter results from the analysis
of 11.17 live days of non-blind data, acquired in October and November 2009. In
the selected fiducial target of 40 kg, and within the pre-defined signal
region, we observe no events and hence exclude spin-independent WIMP-nucleon
elastic scattering cross-sections above 3.4 x 10^-44 cm^2 for 55 GeV/c^2 WIMPs
at 90% confidence level. Below 20 GeV/c^2, this result constrains the
interpretation of the CoGeNT and DAMA signals as being due to spin-independent,
elastic, light mass WIMP interactions.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. Matches published versio
Material screening and selection for XENON100
Results of the extensive radioactivity screening campaign to identify
materials for the construction of XENON100 are reported. This Dark Matter
search experiment is operated underground at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran
Sasso (LNGS), Italy. Several ultra sensitive High Purity Germanium detectors
(HPGe) have been used for gamma ray spectrometry. Mass spectrometry has been
applied for a few low mass plastic samples. Detailed tables with the
radioactive contaminations of all screened samples are presented, together with
the implications for XENON100.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur
Critical Elements in Supergene Phosphates: The Example of the Weathering Profile at the Gavà Neolithic Mines, Catalonia, Spain
The essential role of Critical Elements (CE) in 21st century economy has led to an increasing demand of these metals and promotes the exploration of non-conventional deposits such as weathering profiles. The present work is focused on the study of a weathering profile located at the Archaeological Park of the Gavà Neolithic Mines, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. In the Gavà deposit, acid and oxidising meteoric fluids generated intense weathering during the early Pleistocene, affecting series of Llandoverian black shales and associated syn-sedimentary phosphates. The circulation of these acid fluids at deeper levels of the profile generated supergene vein-like mineralisations comprised of secondary phosphates (e.g., variscite, perhamite, crandallite, phosphosiderite) and sulphates (e.g., jarosite, alunite). This supergene mineralisation is significantly enriched in certain CE (e.g., Ga, Sc, REE, In, Co and Sb) that were mobilised from host rock components and later hosted in the crystal lattice of supergene minerals. Weathering processes and corresponding supergene enrichment of CE at the Gavà deposit could be used as an example to determine exploration guidelines of CE in weathering profiles and associated supergene phosphates worldwide
Dark Matter Results from 100 Live Days of XENON100 Data
We present results from the direct search for dark matter with the XENON100
detector, installed underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of
INFN, Italy. XENON100 is a two-phase time projection chamber with a 62 kg
liquid xenon target. Interaction vertex reconstruction in three dimensions with
millimeter precision allows to select only the innermost 48 kg as ultra-low
background fiducial target. In 100.9 live days of data, acquired between
January and June 2010, no evidence for dark matter is found. Three candidate
events were observed in a pre-defined signal region with an expected background
of 1.8 +/- 0.6 events. This leads to the most stringent limit on dark matter
interactions today, excluding spin-independent elastic WIMP-nucleon scattering
cross-sections above 7.0x10^-45 cm^2 for a WIMP mass of 50 GeV/c^2 at 90%
confidence level.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures; matches accepted versio
Implications on Inelastic Dark Matter from 100 Live Days of XENON100 Data
The XENON100 experiment has recently completed a dark matter run with 100.9
live-days of data, taken from January to June 2010. Events in a 48kg fiducial
volume in the energy range between 8.4 and 44.6 keVnr have been analyzed. A
total of three events have been found in the predefined signal region,
compatible with the background prediction of (1.8 \pm 0.6) events. Based on
this analysis we present limits on the WIMP-nucleon cross section for inelastic
dark matter. With the present data we are able to rule out the explanation for
the observed DAMA/LIBRA modulation as being due to inelastic dark matter
scattering off iodine at a 90% confidence level.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
Non-minimal kinetic coupling and Chaplygin gas cosmology
In the frame of the scalar field model with non minimal kinetic coupling to
gravity, we study the cosmological solutions of the Chaplygin gas model of dark
energy. By appropriately restricting the potential, we found the scalar field,
the potential and coupling giving rise to the Chaplygin gas solution.
Extensions to the generalized and modified Chaplygin gas have been made.Comment: 18 pages, 2 figures. To appear in EPJ
Measurement of Through-Going Particle Momentum By Means Of Multiple Scattering With The ICARUS T600 TPC
The ICARUS collaboration has demonstrated, following the operation of a 600
ton (T600) detector at shallow depth, that the technique based on liquid Argon
TPCs is now mature. The study of rare events, not contemplated in the Standard
Model, can greatly benefit from the use of this kind of detectors. In
particular, a deeper understanding of atmospheric neutrino properties will be
obtained thanks to the unprecedented quality of the data ICARUS provides.
However if we concentrate on the T600 performance, most of the
charged current sample will be partially contained, due to the reduced
dimensions of the detector. In this article, we address the problem of how well
we can determine the kinematics of events having partially contained tracks.
The analysis of a large sample of atmospheric muons collected during the T600
test run demonstrate that, in case the recorded track is at least one meter
long, the muon momentum can be reconstructed by an algorithm that measures the
Multiple Coulomb Scattering along the particle's path. Moreover, we show that
momentum resolution can be improved by a factor two using an algorithm based on
the Kalman Filtering technique
Measurement of the muon decay spectrum with the ICARUS liquid Argon TPC
Examples are given which prove the ICARUS detector quality through relevant
physics measurements. We study the muon decay energy spectrum from a sample of
stopping muon events acquired during the test run of the ICARUS T600 detector.
This detector allows the spatial reconstruction of the events with fine
granularity, hence, the precise measurement of the range and dE/dx of the muon
with high sampling rate. This information is used to compute the calibration
factors needed for the full calorimetric reconstruction of the events. The
Michel rho parameter is then measured by comparison of the experimental and
Monte Carlo simulated muon decay spectra, obtaining rho = 0.72 +/- 0.06(stat.)
+/- 0.08(syst.). The energy resolution for electrons below ~50 MeV is finally
extracted from the simulated sample, obtaining (Emeas-Emc)/Emc =
11%/sqrt(E[MeV]) + 2%.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, LaTex, A4. Some text and 1 figure added. Final
