Purpose: To evaluate the pain of the latent trigger points of the upper trapezius, on individuals submitted with an ultrasound (US) treatment with aloe vera or with common gel. Methods: 24 individuals, with an average of ages of 23,44 years, where randomly assigned into two groups, but due to 8 withdrawals, 7 stayed in the group using the common gel (group 1) and 9 in the group US using aloe vera (group 2),. US’s were applied bilaterally on the latent trigger points of the upper trapezius, throughout 10 sessions, in the space of 2 weeks. The pain intensity was evaluated, using a numeric pain scale (NPS) and the pain threshold using a pressure algometer before the first session and after the 5th and the 10th session. Results: Group 1 had a significant diminish of pain, of both trapezius, with NPS, but a higher pain threshold of the right trapezius between the first and last evaluation. In group 2, only from the 5th session that significant enhancements where observed with NPS and by the threshold, on both trapezius. However, at no point there were differences between groups. Conclusion: The two techniques that we tested were effective for diminishing the perception of the pain intensiveness, and aloe vera contributed for a higher tolerance of the pain threshold on both sides of the upper trapezius.N/

Static Verification of Cloud Applications with Why3

Nowadays large-scale distributed applications rely on replication in order to improve their services. Having data replicated in multiple datacenters increases availability, but it might lead to concurrent updates that violate data integrity. A possible approach to solve this issue is to use strong consistency in the application because this way there is a total order of operations in every replica. However, that would make the application abdicate of its availability. An alternative would be to use weak consistency to make the application more available, but that could break data integrity. To resolve this issue many of these applications use a combination of weak and strong consistency models, such that synchronization is only introduced in the execution of operations that can break data integrity. To build applications that use multiple consistency models, developers have the difficult task of finding the right balance between two conflicting goals: minimizing synchronization while preserving data integrity. To achieve this balance developers have to reason about the concurrent effects of each operation, which is a non-trivial task when it comes to large and complex applications. In this document we propose an approach consisting of a static analysis tool that helps developers find a balance between strong and weak consistency in applications that operate over weakly consistent databases. The verification process is based on a recently defined proof rule that was proven to be sound. The proposed tool uses Why3 as an intermediate framework that communicates with external provers, to analyse the correctness of the application specification. Our contributions also include a predicate transformer and a library of verified data types that can be used to resolve commutativity issues in applications. The predicate transformer can be used to lighten the specification effort

This thesis describes Jorge de Sena and Alexandre O'Neill‘s poetic intents, assessing how both authors configure distinct ways of looking at posthumous reputation and their place in the history of literature. As such, it will be argued that these poets belong to distinct literary families. On the one hand, Jorge de Sena appears to deflect his precursors and emulate his contemporaries, which indicates that his path is compatible with the Bloomian description of the strong poet. On the other hand, Alexandre O'Neill sets himself apart from the theoretical scheme Bloom conceives in The Anxiety of Influence. Whilst presenting a kind of poetry that welcomes self-deprecation, O'Neill understates the expectations concerning his writing and doesn't encourage controversial literary relations.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

ABSTRACT This research project focused on the subjective experiences of divorce, experienced by men within the South African context. It involved conducting focus groups, as well as individual interviews, with the aim of eliciting common themes. The data was analysed using thematic content analysis and the themes were then categorized with the assistance of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory of development. This provided a framework to order the myriad themes that emerged through the interviews, which varied from emotional responses to the prolonged and complex stressor sequence that is divorce, legal issues around custody, as well as the broader financial and social impact experienced by the men involved. These themes included the negative as well as positive impacts experienced by divorced men

Abstract: The present internship report aims at analyzing conventionalized metaphorical images collected from Spanish and English technical texts and correspondent translations into European Portuguese, stemming from a confrontation approach between common language terms and specialized language terms, in order to highlight the univocity of technical terms. The corpus of texts that have undergone translation in the course of the translation internship at Onoma, encompasses an array of technical texts from Medicine, Engineering and Entreprise communication, whose terms are gathered at the end of the intership report in a glossary divided both into technical subdomains and languages. It should be underlined that, by approaching the role of metaphors in the coinage of technical terms, the present report tackles a subject that has been underdeveloped both in the translation literature and in internship translation reports

Chicory increases acetate turnover, but not propionate and butyrate peripheral turnovers in rats

Chicory roots are rich in inulin that is degraded into SCFA in the caecum and colon. Whole-body SCFA metabolism was investigated in rats during food deprivation and postprandial states. After 22h of food deprivation, sixteen rats received an IV injection of radioactive 14C-labelled SCFA. The volume of distribution and the fractional clearance rate of SCFA were 0·25-0·27 litres/kg and 5·4-5·9%/min, respectively. The half-life in the first extracellular rapidly decaying compartment was between 0·9 and 1·4min. After 22h of food deprivation, another seventeen rats received a primed continuous IV infusion of 13C-labelled SCFA for 2h. Isotope enrichment (13C) of SCFA was determined in peripheral arterial blood by MS. Peripheral acetate, propionate and butyrate turnover rates were 29, 4 and 0·3μmol/kg per min respectively. Following 4 weeks of treatment with chicory root or control diets, eighteen fed rats received a primed continuous IV infusion of 13C-labelled SCFA for 2h. Intestinal degradation of dietary chicory lowered caecal pH, enhanced caecal and colonic weights, caecal SCFA concentrations and breath H2.The diet with chicory supplementation enhanced peripheral acetate turnover by 25% (P=0·017) concomitant with an increase in plasma acetate concentration. There were no changes in propionate or butyrate turnovers. In conclusion, by setting up a multi-tracer approach to simultaneously assess the turnovers of acetate, propionate and butyrate it was demonstrated that a chronic chicory-rich diet significantly increases peripheral acetate turnover but not that of propionate or butyrate in rat

Cholesterol-lowering properties of Ganoderma lucidum in vitro, ex vivo, and in hamsters and minipigs

INTRODUCTION: There has been renewed interest in mushroom medicinal properties. We studied cholesterol lowering properties of Ganoderma lucidum (Gl), a renowned medicinal species. RESULTS: Organic fractions containing oxygenated lanosterol derivatives inhibited cholesterol synthesis in T9A4 hepatocytes. In hamsters, 5% Gl did not effect LDL; but decreased total cholesterol (TC) 9.8%, and HDL 11.2%. Gl (2.5 and 5%) had effects on several fecal neutral sterols and bile acids. Both Gl doses reduced hepatic microsomal ex-vivo HMG-CoA reductase activity. In minipigs, 2.5 Gl decreased TC, LDL- and HDL cholesterol 20, 27, and 18%, respectively (P < 0.05); increased fecal cholestanol and coprostanol; and decreased cholate. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, Gl has potential to reduce LDL cholesterol in vivo through various mechanisms. Next steps are to: fully characterize bioactive components in lipid soluble/insoluble fractions; evaluate bioactivity of isolated fractions; and examine human cholesterol lowering properties. Innovative new cholesterol-lowering foods and medicines containing Gl are envisioned
