Tomatoisanimportantcropduetoitsnutritionalcontributionsandorganolepticproperties, which make it an appetizing vegetable around the world. In its sowing, the use of seed is the most accessible propagation mechanism for farmers. However, the induction to germination and emergence is often limited in the absence of stimulants that promote the development and growth of the seedling, added to the interference of infectious agents that notoriously reduce the vitality and viability of the seed. Given this, it was proposed as a research objective to determine the effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) mediated by a green route on the germinative characteristics of Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. 1768 “tomato”. The experimental phase consisted of the synthesis of ZnO NPs and its subsequent characterization. After its synthesis, its inoculation was conducted during the germination of seeds of L. esculentum, considering six sample groups for the treatment with zinc nanoparticles (T1: Control; T2: 21.31 ppm; T3: 33.58 ppm; T4: 49.15 ppm; T5: 63.59 and T6: 99.076 ppm). The results indicate that concentrations close to 100 ppm of ZnO NPs are ideal in the treatment of L. esculentum seeds, due to the promotion of enzymatic and metabolic activity to achieve cell elongation; likewise, the biosynthesized nanoparticles showed no phytotoxicity, due to the fact that, in all the treatments, there were processes of germination and emergence. This was linked to the generation of a Zn0-phenolate complex through a chelating effect, which generates compatibilitywiththeseedand, comparedtoclassicinorganicsynthesis, usuallyshowsphytotoxicity. In this sense, green synthesis is presented as a great alternative in this type of application

The rapid evolution of resistant bacteria is a huge problem in medicine because makes the treatment of infections more and more difficult. The bactericidal properties of noble metal nanoparticles could be a solution. In this work silver nanoparticles were produced by using two nanosecond Nd:YVO4 lasers operating at 1064 and 532 nm respectively to ablate a silver target submerged in pure de-ionized water. Part of the resulting colloidal solution was injected as a fine stream by a compressed air system and re-irradiated one and three times with the same laser to resize and get uniform nanoparticles. The obtained nanoparticles by ablation and re-irradiation consisted of crystalline Ag nanoparticles with a bimodal size distribution. The particle size has been reduced by subsequent laser re-irradiation with both laser sources, reaching a 40% of mean size reduction. Inhibitory effects on the proliferation of Staphylococcus aureus was demonstrated on silver nanoparticles obtained after re-irradiation with the infrared laser.Postprint (author's final draft

Several gene expression profiles with a strong correlation with patient outcome have been previously described in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), although their applicability in clinical practice as biomarkers has been particularly limited. Here we describe the training and validation of a gene expression signature for predicting early progression of patients with CLL based on the analysis of 200 genes related to microenvironment signaling on the NanoString platform. In the training cohort (n=154), the CLL15 assay containing a 15-gene signature was associated with time to first treatment (TtFT) (HR: 2.83, 95%CI 2.17-3.68; p<0.001). The prognostic value of the CLL15 score (HR 1.71, [95%CI 1.15-2.52]; p=0.007) was further confirmed in an external independent validation cohort (n=112). Of note, the CLL15 score improved the prognostic capacity over the IGHV mutational status and the International Prognostic Score for asymptomatic early-stage (IPS-E) CLL. In multivariate analysis, the CLL15 score (HR: 1.83, 95%CI 1.32-2.56; p<0.001) and the IPS-E CLL (HR: 2.23, 95%CI 1.59-3.12; p<0.001) were independently associated with TtFT. The newly developed and validated CLL15 assay successfully translates previous gene signatures, such as the microenvironment signaling, into a new gene expression-based assay with prognostic implications in CLL

Deep brain stimulation in Parkinson disease

    Get PDF
Introduction: Parkinson’s disease is considered the second cause of neurodegenerative disease, in which motor signs and symptoms such as tremor, bradykinesia, rigidity and postural instability are highlighted, accompanied by non-motor symptoms such as sleep, autonomic, cognitive, gastrointestinal among others disturbances. The pharmacological treatment of the disease at the beginning is usually useful, but when the symptoms persist, the treatment fails or its adverse reactions are not tolerated, it is necessary to consider alternatives such as deep brain stimulation. Methodology: This is a narrative review with emphasis on the clinical aspects of deep brain stimulation therapy in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Discussion: Deep brain stimulation is a surgical technique in which electrodes are implanted in specific brain regions, usually the subthalamic nucleus, globus pallidus interna or ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus, and are connected to a subcutaneous pacemaker from which the activity of these areas is modulated electrically. This therapy has been shown to be cost-effective, provides considerable benefits in improving the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and has clinical evidence in patients who have been correctly selected
