    Investigation of Spatial and Temporal Aspects of Airborne Gamma Spectrometry: Final Report

    A study has been conducted which demonstrates the reproducibility of Airborne Gamma-ray Spectrometry (AGS) and the effects of changes in survey parameters, particularly line spacing. This has involved analysis of new data collected from estuarine salt marsh and upland areas in West Cumbria and SW Scotland during three phases of field work, in which over 150000 spectra were recorded with a 16 litre NaI(Tl) detector. The shapes and inventories of radiometric features have been examined. It has been shown that features with dimensions that are large relative to the survey line spacing are very well reproduced with all line spacings, whereas smaller features show more variability. The AGS technique has been applied to measuring changes in the radiation environment over a range of time scales from a few days to several years using data collected during this and previous surveys of the area. Changes due to sedimentation and erosion of salt marshes, and hydrological transportation of upland activity have been observed

    The psychological impact of guerilla warfare on the boer forces during the Anglo-Boer war

    The thesis is based on a multi disciplinary study involving both particulars regarding military history and certain psychological theories. In order to be able to discuss the psychological experiences of Boers during the guerrilla phase of the Anglo-Boer War, the first chapters of the thesis strive to provide the required background. Firstly an overview of the initial conventional phase of the war is furnished, followed by a discussion of certain psychological issues relevant to stress and methods of coping with stress. Subsequently, guerrilla warfare as a global concern is examined. A number of important events during the transitional stage, in other words, the period between conventional warfare and total guerrilla warfare, are considered followed by the regional details concerning the Boers’ plans for guerrilla warfare. These details include the ecological features, the socio-economic issues of that time and military information about the regions illustrating the dissimilarity and variety involved. In the chapters that follow the focus is concentrated on the psychological impact of the guerrilla war on the Boers. The wide range of stressors (factors inducing stress) are arranged according to certain topics: stress caused by military situations; stress caused by the loss of infrastructure in the republics; stress caused by environmental factors; stress arising from daily hardships; stress caused by anguish and finally stressors prompted by an individuals disposition. Then the psychological theories regarding an individual’s resistance resources (or general resistance resources ─ GRRs) and the means of using these resources to cope with stress are applied to the actual circumstances that the Boers were faced with. This discourse is arranged according to material resources, motivational issues and intrapersonal resources. Subsequently the complete guerrilla warfare phase is considered, the accent being placed on the psychological effect that the Boers’ strategies, as well as the British counter strategies, had on the republican forces. The phase is subdivided into four stages according to the course of the war, while still furnishing an overall account of the guerrilla phase ─ ranging from the initial successes on Boer side, the gradual decline in Boer initiatives to the final months, when the few successful encounters that the Boers launched, came too late to change matters. In the final chapter the impact of the guerrilla warfare on a selected group of Boers is examined in the form of case studies. The group includes President M.T. Steyn, whose health failed him in the end and Generals C.R. de Wet and J.C. Smuts, where their positive conduct is considered from a psychological perspective. The result of the continuous pressure on the young Commandant G.J. Scheepers is examined and the stress related experiences of Chief Field Cornet H.S. van der Walt, Burghers P.J. du Toit and R.W.     We prove uniqueness of ground state solutions Q=Q(x)0Q = Q(|x|) \geq 0 for the nonlinear equation (Δ)sQ+QQα+1=0(-\Delta)^s Q + Q - Q^{\alpha+1}= 0 in R\mathbb{R}, where 0<s<10 < s < 1 and 0<α<4s12s0 < \alpha < \frac{4s}{1-2s} for s<1/2s < 1/2 and 0<α<0 < \alpha < \infty for s1/2s \geq 1/2. Here (Δ)s(-\Delta)^s denotes the fractional Laplacian in one dimension. In particular, we generalize (by completely different techniques) the specific uniqueness result obtained by Amick and Toland for s=1/2s=1/2 and α=1\alpha=1 in [Acta Math., \textbf{167} (1991), 107--126]. As a technical key result in this paper, we show that the associated linearized operator L+=(Δ)s+1(α+1)QαL_+ = (-\Delta)^s + 1 - (\alpha+1) Q^\alpha is nondegenerate; i.\,e., its kernel satisfies kerL+=span{Q}\mathrm{ker}\, L_+ = \mathrm{span}\, \{Q'\}. This result about L+L_+ proves a spectral assumption, which plays a central role for the stability of solitary waves and blowup analysis for nonlinear dispersive PDEs with fractional Laplacians, such as the generalized Benjamin-Ono (BO) and Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) water wave equations.Comment: 45 page

    Stearyl methacrylate-based polymers as crystal habit modifiers for triacylglycerols

    © 2018 American Chemical Society. Triacrylglycerols (TAGs) are ubiquitous and naturally occurring fat molecules that can make materials with diverse textural, mechanical, and optical properties. These properties are intimately linked to their complex hierarchical crystal structures, which can be controlled by additives that interfere with crystallization. A series of semicrystalline, bottlebrush-like copolymers have been developed to modify TAG crystallization and influence crystal habit. Synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, these copolymer additives combine crystalline poly(stearyl methacrylate) with amorphous poly(oleyl methacrylate) in either block or statistical architecture. Upon cooling mixtures of these copolymers with solutions of tristearin (SSS) in triolein (OOO), the polymeric additives affected SSS crystallization at multiple length-scales. Microscopy analysis revealed control over SSS crystal morphology indicative of crystal aggregation, while small and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (SAXD/WAXD) offered insight into the underlying mechanism of action. Analyzing the physical broadening of lamellar peaks suggested that the fraction of amorphous poly(oleyl methacrylate) controls the thickness of primary nanoplatelets, and crystal structures derived from WAXD showed that the less stable α- or β′-polymorphs of SSS are stabilized by block or statistical copolymers, respectively. Exploiting these additives to simultaneously manipulate the packing of TAG molecules within lamellae, the size of primary crystallites, and the aggregation of crystallites could diversify fat material properties and supplement wide-ranging applications

    Desenvolvimento de um roteiro conceitual para a gestão da biodiversidade e dos serviços ecossistêmicos no Caribe mexicano

    Coral reefs and mangroves support rich biodiversity and provide ecosystem services that range from food, recreational benefits and coastal protection services, among others. They are one of the most threatened ecosystems by urbanization processes. In this context, we developed a conceptual framework for the management of biodiversity and ecosystem services for these coastal environments. We based our workflow on two sections: “Information base” and “Governance” and use the Puerto Morelos Coastal region as a case study for coastal protection. Puerto Morelos is between two of the most touristic destinations of Mexico (Playa del Carmen and Cancun) that has experienced an increase of population in the past four decades resulting in an intensification of multiple threats to its ecosystems. We characterized the two ecosystems with a “Management Units” strategy. An expert-based ecosystem services matrix was also described in order to connect mangroves and coral reef ecosystems with the multiple beneficiaries. Then an ecosystem model (conceptual model and Global Biodiversity model) was developed. The conceptual model was useful in understanding the interplay processes between systems regarding the ecosystem service of “Coastal Protection”. The Global Biodiversity model evidenced the human-induced shifts in the biodiversity for mangrove and coral reefs ecosystems. Also, a projection for 2035 of “best” and “worst” scenarios was applied using GLOBIO3. A DPSIR conceptual framework was used to analyze environmental problems regarding ecosystem services maintenance. Finally, we evaluated a set of policies associated with these ecosystems that favor coastal protection integrity. This framework facilitates the identification of the most relevant processes and controls about the provision of coastal protection service. It can also be useful to better target management actions and as a tool to identify future management needs to tackle the challenges preventing more effective conservation of coastal environments.Recifes de coral e manguezais possuem rica biodiversidade e fornecem serviços ecossistêmicos, tais como, alimento, recreação, proteção costeira, entre outros. Esses ecossistemas encontram-se entre os mais ameaçados pelos processos de urbanização. Nesse contexto, desenvolvemos um roteiro conceitual para a gestão da biodiversidade e dos serviços ecossistêmicos desses ambientes costeiros. Organizamos nossa sequência de passos de trabalho em duas seções: “Base de informações” e “Governança” e usamos a região costeira da cidade de Puerto Morelos (México) como um estudo de caso para analisar o serviço de proteção de costa. Puerto Morelos encontra-se entre dois dos destinos mais turísticos do México (Playa del Carmen e Cancún), e portanto sua população vem aumentando nas últimas quatro décadas, resultando na intensificação de múltiplas ameaças para os ecossistemas. Primeiramente, caracterizamos os dois ecossistemas identificando-os como “Unidades de Gestão”, detalhando seus principais componentes e processos. Através de uma “Matriz de serviços ecossistêmicos”, construída com base na opinião de especialistas, foram sistematizados os principais serviços ecossistêmicos prestados pelos manguezais e recifes de corais aos múltiplos beneficiários. Em seguida, foi desenvolvida uma modelagem do sistema (e ecossistemas) através de sua representação na forma de um modelo conceitual e um modelo numérico de Biodiversidade Global. O modelo conceitual facilitou a compreensão dos processos de interação entre sistemas em relação ao serviço “Proteção Costeira”. O modelo numérico evidenciou as mudanças induzidas pelo homem na biodiversidade dos ecossistemas de manguezal e recifes de coral. Além disso, uma projeção dos cenários “melhor” e “pior” foi desenvolvida para 2035 usando GLOBIO3. A Estrutura conceitual DPSIR foi aplicada para analisar problemas ambientais relacionados à manutenção dos serviços ecossistêmicos. Finalmente, avaliamos um conjunto de políticas públicas associadas a esses ecossistemas e que favorecem a integridade da proteção costeira. Portanto, o roteiro facilitou a identificação dos principais processos e controles para a provisão de um serviço ecossistêmico.     Star clusters near and far; tracing star formation across cosmic time

In this review, we will first focus on their constituents, i.e.\ detailed insight into their stellar populations and their surrounding ionised, warm, neutral, and molecular gas. We, then, move beyond the Local Group to review star cluster populations at various evolutionary stages, and in diverse galactic environmental conditions accessible in the local Universe. At high redshift, where conditions for cluster formation and evolution are more extreme, we are only able to observe the integrated light of a handful of objects that we believe will become globular clusters. We therefore discuss how numerical and analytical methods, informed by the observed properties of cluster populations in the local Universe, are used to develop sophisticated simulations potentially capable of disentangling the genetic map of galaxy formation and assembly that is carried by globular cluster populations.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
