    Spin-enhanced magnetocaloric effect in molecular nanomagnets

    An unusually large magnetocaloric effect for the temperature region below 10 K is found for the Fe-14 molecular nanomagnet. This is to large extent caused by its extremely large spin S ground state combined with an excess of entropy arising from the presence of low-lying excited S states. We also show that the highly symmetric Fe-14 cluster core, resulting in small cluster magnetic anisotropy, enables the occurrence of long-range antiferromagnetic order below T-N=1.87 K

    Graph-Embedding Empowered Entity Retrieval

    In this research, we improve upon the current state of the art in entity retrieval by re-ranking the result list using graph embeddings. The paper shows that graph embeddings are useful for entity-oriented search tasks. We demonstrate empirically that encoding information from the knowledge graph into (graph) embeddings contributes to a higher increase in effectiveness of entity retrieval results than using plain word embeddings. We analyze the impact of the accuracy of the entity linker on the overall retrieval effectiveness. Our analysis further deploys the cluster hypothesis to explain the observed advantages of graph embeddings over the more widely used word embeddings, for user tasks involving ranking entities

    Wounds that heal and wounds that don't - The role of the IL-33/ST2 pathway in tissue repair and tumorigenesis

    IL-33 is a member of the IL-1 family of cytokines. IL-33 is predominantly located within the nucleus of cells where it plays a role in gene regulation. Given the right combination of signals and cellular damage, stored IL-33 is released from the cell where it can interact with its receptor ST2, triggering danger-associated responses and act as a cellular "alarmin". Whilst IL-33/ST2 signalling has been shown to induce potent pro-inflammatory responses that can be detrimental in certain disease states, a dichotomous, protective role of IL-33 in promoting wound healing has also emerged in multiple tissues types. This review will explore the current literature concerning this homeostatic role of IL-33/ST2 in tissue repair and also review its role in uncontrolled wound responses as seen in both fibrosis and tumorigenesis

    Survey of highly non-Keplerian orbits with low-thrust propulsion

    Celestial mechanics has traditionally been concerned with orbital motion under the action of a conservative gravitational potential. In particular, the inverse square gravitational force due to the potential of a uniform, spherical mass leads to a family of conic section orbits, as determined by Isaac Newton, who showed that Kepler‟s laws were derivable from his theory of gravitation. While orbital motion under the action of a conservative gravitational potential leads to an array of problems with often complex and interesting solutions, the addition of non-conservative forces offers new avenues of investigation. In particular, non-conservative forces lead to a rich diversity of problems associated with the existence, stability and control of families of highly non-Keplerian orbits generated by a gravitational potential and a non-conservative force. Highly non-Keplerian orbits can potentially have a broad range of practical applications across a number of different disciplines. This review aims to summarize the combined wealth of literature concerned with the dynamics, stability and control of highly non-Keplerian orbits for various low thrust propulsion devices, and to demonstrate some of these potential applications

    Localized Nasopharyngeal Amyloidosis

    A mass in the nasopharynx often implies a malignancy in adults, particularly in the endemic areas of Epstein-Barr virus-associated undifferentiated carcinoma. We report an 86-year-old male patient who presented to our rhinologic outpatient department with postnasal drip for several years, with no other associated nasal symptoms. Physical examination with nasal endoscopy found a prominent bulge in the nasopharynx. Pathological examination of the biopsied specimens identified features consistent with amyloidosis. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an enhanced soft-tissue mass localized to the nasopharyngeal region. We excluded the possibility of a partial representation of a potential systemic amyloidosis. Regular follow-up including nasal endoscopy was undertaken. Over 3 years of observation, the disease process remained silent. Here, the clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment options of this rare entity are discussed

    The Infant Feeding Genogram: a tool for exploring family infant feeding history and identifying support needs

    Background: Family culture and beliefs are passed through the generations within families and influence what constitutes appropriate infant care. This includes infant feeding decisions where a family history and support network congruent with women’s infant feeding intentions has been shown to be important to women’s breastfeeding experience. This is reflected in breastfeeding rates where women who were not breastfed themselves are less likely to initiate and continue with breastfeeding. Given the importance of family infant feeding history in the initiation and duration of breastfeeding, and the limited ability of some families to provide support; it is unclear why infant feeding family history and support networks are not explored during pregnancy. Methods: The Infant Feeding Genogram was adapted from a simple pictorial device that is widely used in psychotherapy and genetic counselling. This tool was developed as part of a study investigating the experience of women when they were the first to breastfeed in their family. Fourteen Scottish participants completed their Infant Feeding Genogram as part of a semi-structured interview. The tool was adapted alongside their narratives to give a visual representation of each participant’s family infant feeding history. Results: The utility of the genogram is illustrated through two contrasting case examples with very different family feeding histories. The genogram showed family structures, patterns of infant feeding over time, and supportive or conflicting relationships. In the research setting it assisted women to explore their infant feeding history, identify challenges and sources of support and build rapport with the interviewer. Conclusions: The infant feeding genogram is proposed as a time efficient tool that could assist health professionals and other breastfeeding workers to support women and their families and by stimulating discussion around breastfeeding, Bby identifying strengths or possible deficits in social support for each individual, the tool could inform tailored support and care interventions. The effectiveness and acceptability of the Infant Feeding Genogram requires testing in the clinical environment. However, its successful application in other clinical contexts, combined with the interest in genealogy in popular culture, mean this is likely to be an acceptable, family friendly way to develop more effective breastfeeding conversations

    Attachment Aware Schools: the impact of a targeted and collaborative intervention

    The Attachment Aware Schools (AAS) project was a targeted and collaborative intervention between academics and school-based practitioners. The aim of the project was to promote practitioner awareness of attachment in relation to child behaviours and learning. It focused on using relational-based strategies and interventions to address the needs of children and young people. The AAS framework promoted Emotion Coaching as a universal, relational-based practice approach, with specialised targeted support for children with additional needs. Supportive managerial strategies and setting policies sustained the integration and maintenance of attachment-informed practice and school ethos. This article reports the findings from the project which included over 200 participants (107 teaching and support staff and 94 pupils aged 5 to 16 years), from 40 schools, in two different Local Authorities within the UK. Adopting a mixed methods approach, qualitative and quantitative data provided hard and soft indicators of improved pupil and adult outcomes. Findings demonstrated significant improvements in pupils’ academic achievement in reading, writing and maths. There were significant decreases in sanctions, exclusions and overall difficulties. Practitioners reported a positive impact on professional practice, adult self-regulation and emotional self-control, and were more confident when talking with children about emotions. This project contributes to the growing evidence based on the effectiveness of whole school attachment-based strategies and is already demonstrating policy implications at a national level

    Atmospheric circulation changes and their impact on extreme sea levels around Australia

    Projections of sea level rise (SLR) will lead to increasing coastal impacts during extreme sea level events globally; however, there is significant uncertainty around short-term coastal sea level variability and the attendant frequency and severity of extreme sea level events. In this study, we investigate drivers of coastal sea level variability (including extremes) around Australia by means of historical conditions as well as future changes under a high greenhouse gas emissions scenario (RCP 8.5). To do this, a multi-decade hindcast simulation is validated against tide gauge data. The role of tide–surge interaction is assessed and found to have negligible effects on storm surge characteristic heights over most of the coastline. For future projections, 20-year-long simulations are carried out over the time periods 1981–1999 and 2081–2099 using atmospheric forcing from four CMIP5 climate models. Changes in extreme sea levels are apparent, but there are large inter-model differences. On the southern mainland coast all models simulated a southward movement of the subtropical ridge which led to a small reduction in sea level extremes in the hydrodynamic simulations. Sea level changes over the Gulf of Carpentaria in the north are largest and positive during austral summer in two out of the four models. In these models, changes to the northwest monsoon appear to be the cause of the sea level response. These simulations highlight a sensitivity of this semi-enclosed gulf to changes in large-scale dynamics in this region and indicate that further assessment of the potential changes to the northwest monsoon in a larger multi-model ensemble should be investigated, together with the northwest monsoon's effect on extreme sea levels.</p

    Displaced geostationary orbit design using hybrid sail propulsion

    Because of an increase in the number of geostationary spacecraft and the limits imposed by east–west spacing requirements, the geostationary orbit is becoming congested. To increase its capacity, this paper proposes to create new geostationary slots by displacing the geostationary orbit either out of or in the equatorial plane by means of hybrid solar sail and solar electric propulsion. To minimize propellant consumption, optimal steering laws for the solar sail and solar-electric-propulsion thrust vectors are derived and the performance in terms of mission lifetime is assessed. For comparison, similar analyses are performed for conventional propulsion, including impulsive and pure solar electric propulsion. It is shown that hybrid sails outperform these propulsion techniques and that out-of-plane displacements outperform in-plane displacements. The out-of-plane case is therefore further investigated in a spacecraft mass budget to determine the payload mass capacity. Finally, two transfers that enable a further improvement of the performance of hybrid sails for the out-of-plane case are optimized using a direct pseudospectral method: a seasonal transit between orbits displaced above and below the equatorial plane and a transit to a parking orbit when geostationary coverage is not needed. Both transfers are shown to require only a modest propellant budget, outweighing the improvements they can establish
