Role of branched-chain fatty acids in pH stress tolerance in Listeria monocytogenes
In alkaline conditions, Listeria monocytogenes cells develop higher proportions of branched-chain fatty acids (FAs), including more anteiso forms. In acid conditions, the opposite occurs. Reduced growth of pH-sensitive mutants at adverse pH (5.0/9.0) was alleviated by the addition of 2-methylbutyrate (an anteiso-FA precursor), suggesting that anteiso-FAs are important in adaptation to adverse pH. The balance between anteiso- and iso-FAs may be more important than changes in the amounts and/or degrees of saturation of FAs in pH adaptation
How Reasoning Aims at Truth
Many hold that theoretical reasoning aims at truth. In this paper, I ask what it is for reasoning to be thus aim-directed. Standard answers to this question explain reasoning’s aim-directedness in terms of intentions, dispositions, or rule-following. I argue that, while these views contain important insights, they are not satisfactory. As an alternative, I introduce and defend a novel account: reasoning aims at truth in virtue of being the exercise of a distinctive kind of cognitive power, one that, unlike ordinary dispositions, is capable of fully explaining its own exercises. I argue that this account is able to avoid the difficulties plaguing standard accounts of the relevant sort of mental teleology
Does gender matter? A cross-national investigation of primary class-room discipline.

With the on-going international debate about educational performance highlighting the widening gender achievement gap between girl and boy pupils, the demand for more male teachers has become prevalent in educational discourse. Concerns have frequently been raised about the underachievement of boys, with claims that the lack of male ‘role models’ in schools has an adverse effect on boys’ academic motivation and engagement. Although previous research has examined ‘teaching’ as institutional talk, men’s linguistic behaviour in the classroom remains largely ignored, especially in regard to enacting discipline. Після зруйнування Чортомлицької Січі російськими військами полковника Яковлєва та козаками Гната Галаган між запорожцями та турецьким султаном Ахметом ІІІ було укладено pacta conventa. За умовами угоди при впадінні річки Кам’янки в Дніпро, вище сьогоднішнього м. Берислава (Кизикермена) запорожцями була заснована Кам’янська Січ. Топографія Січі підтверджувалася свідченням козацьких істориків ХVIII ст. С. Мишецьким, документальними джерелами із січового архіву, архіву Малоросійської колегії, дослідженнями археологічних експедицій Державного історико-культурного заповідника запорозького козацтва на о. Хортиця в 1971-1975 рр. та ін. Археологічні знахідки свідчать, що Кам’янська Січ проіснувала близько 8 років з однією тривалою перервою (1712-1728), коли Запорожці сиділи в шостій по числу – Олешківській Січі. Після трагедії на Чортомлицькій Січі новий кошовий спадкоємець героя Полтавської баталії Костя Гордієнка, енергійний і кмітливий Яків Богуш організував опір козаків Чортомлицької Січі, а потім очолив їх і заклав Кам’янську Січ
Stellar-Mass Black Holes in the Solar Neighborhood
We search for nearby, isolated, accreting, ``stellar-mass'' (3 to
) black holes. Models suggest a synchrotron spectrum in visible
wavelengths and some emission in X-ray wavelengths. Of 3.7 million objects in
the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release, about 150,000 objects have
colors and properties consistent with such a spectrum, and 87 of these objects
are X-ray sources from the ROSAT All Sky Survey. Thirty-two of these have been
confirmed not to be black-holes using optical spectra. We give the positions
and colors of these 55 black-hole candidates, and quantitatively rank them on
their likelihood to be black holes. We discuss uncertainties the expected

Discreet element modeling of under sleeper pads using a box test
It has recently been reported that under sleeper pads (USPs) could improve ballasted rail track by decreasing the sleeper settlement and reducing particle breakage. In order to find out what happens at the particle-pad interface, discrete element modelling (DEM) is used to provide micro mechanical insight. The same positive effects of USP are found in the DEM simulations. The evidence provided by DEM shows that application of a USP allows more particles to be in contact with the pad, and causes these particles to transfer a larger lateral load to the adjacent ballast but a smaller vertical load beneath the sleeper. This could be used to explain why the USP helps to reduce the track settlement. In terms of particle breakage, it is found that most breakage occurs at the particle-sleeper interface and along the main contact force chains between particles under the sleeper. The use of USPs could effectively reduce particle abrasion that occurs in both of these regions
Phylogeographic perspective on the distribution and dispersal of a marine pathogen, the oyster parasite Bonamia exitiosa
The significance of infectious disease has intensified as our marine ecosystems are increasingly altered, with molluscan taxa being among the affected. One of the important pathogens to emerge in recent years, the oyster parasite Bonamia exitiosa,has a broad geographic distribution and has been found to infect a number of oyster species. In order to better understand how B. exitiosa achieved this wide distribution, a gene genealogy was constructed using internal transcribed spacer region ribosomal DNA sequencing data from across the host species range.The analysis revealed population structure in the form of 4 well-defined groups of sequences: 3corresponding to geographic regions (temperate Atlantic and Pacific waters of the Southern Hemisphere, California, and the western Atlantic along the coast of the Americas) and the fourth geographically cosmopolitan. Inclusion of B. exitiosa sequences from New Zealand, Australia, and Argentina in the Southern Hemisphere group may reflect natural dispersal of the parasite via raft-ing with oyster hosts, whereas the California group may reflect limited anthropogenic movement of a host species, Ostrea lurida. The extensive geographic distribution of B. exitiosa parasites belonging to the cosmopolitan and Atlantic Coast groups may relate to both natural and anthropogenic dispersal of a single host, O. stentina, which is distributed from the eastern Americas tothe Mediterranean and African coast to New Zealand — that is, in most regions where B. exitiosa has been found to occur
Promoting survival: A grounded theory study of consequences of modern health practices in Ouramanat region of Iranian Kurdistan
The aim of this qualitative study is to explore the way people using modern health care perceive its consequences in Ouraman-e-Takht region of Iranian Kurdistan. Ouraman-e-Takht is a rural, highly mountainous and dry region located in the southwest Kurdistan province of Iran. Recently, modern health practices have been introduced to the region. The purpose of this study was to investigate, from the Ouramains' point of view, the impact that modern health services and practices have had on the Ouraman traditional way of life. Interview data from respondents were analyzed by using grounded theory. Promoting survival was the core category that explained the impact that modern health practices have had on the Ouraman region. The people of Ouraman interpreted modern health practices as increasing their quality of life and promoting their survival. Results are organized around this core category in a paradigm model consisting of conditions, interactions, and consequences. This model can be used to understand the impact of change from the introduction of modern health on a traditional society
Discrete element modelling of scaled railway ballast under triaxial conditions
The aim of this study is to demonstrate the use of tetrahedral clumps to model scaled railway ballast using the discrete element method (DEM). In experimental triaxial tests, the peak friction angles for scaled ballast are less sensitive to the confining pressure when compared to full-sized ballast. This is presumed to be due to the size effect on particle strength, whereby smaller particles are statistically stronger and exhibit less abrasion. To investigate this in DEM, the ballast is modelled using clumps with breakable asperities to produce the correct volumetric deformation. The effects of the quantity and properties of these asperities are investigated, and it is shown that the strength affects the macroscopic shear strength at both high and low confining pressures, while the effects of the number of asperities diminishes with increasing confining pressure due to asperity breakage. It is also shown that changing the number of asperities only affects the peak friction angle but not the ultimate friction angle by comparing the angles of repose of samples with different numbers of asperities
